Ep. 87 - History isn't fixed! Saban History and Cultural Identity ft Lysanne Charles

The conversation surrounding Caribbean history and the importance of preserving it has gained more attention over the past few years, especially as we unpack conversations around reparations and the lasting effects of slavery. But when it comes to a small island like Saba, with such a rich history, is it really true that people don't know their own history, or is the story more complex than that? ⛰️

In Episode 87, we're joined by artist, educator, historian, writer and poet Lysanne Charles for a deeper dive into Saban history, cultural identity and why history isn't always as fixed as we think.
We get into:
• The complexities of Saban history and why certain stories remain untold
• Why older generations may have avoided conversations about the past
• Who gets to define cultural identity and what it means to be Saban
• Why history is multifaceted and the importance of questioning what we've been taught
• The literacy crisis and the importance of reading Caribbean literature
• How books and storytelling help preserve our history for future generations
This episode is about history, identity, cultural preservation and understanding that the stories we inherit aren't always the full picture.
Let us know in the comments: Who gets to decide what our history and cultural identity should look like?
