What Happened in Thessalonica !!

Welcome back, truth-seekers, to 2 Minutes with the Lord and our Season 8 Mission Series: Paul in 12 Cities. I am your host, Fr. Veigas Dominic SVD, and together, we are tracing Paul’s footsteps across the ancient world to discover how the Gospel was planted in city after city.

In this episode, we arrive in Thessalonica — a city where the Gospel took root quickly, but also faced fierce opposition. From Thessalonica, we learn what it means to hold faith in the face of adversity.

Where is Thessalonica?

Thessalonica, today known as Thessaloniki in Greece, was the capital of Macedonia and a vital seaport along the Roman trade routes. It was a bustling metropolis of over 200,000 people, loyal to Rome, and full of diverse religious influences.

When Paul and Silas arrived there, they went first to the Jewish synagogue, as was Paul’s custom. For three Sabbaths, Paul reasoned from the Scriptures, explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. Many Jews, devout Greeks, and prominent women believed.

But success stirred resistance. Other Jews, jealous of Paul’s influence, incited a mob. They dragged Jason — Paul’s host — and some other believers before the city officials, shouting: “These men who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here, and Jason has welcomed them into his house. They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, one called Jesus.” (Acts 17:6–7)

The accusation was political: proclaiming Jesus as King was seen as treason against Caesar. Thessalonica quickly became a city of conflict — faith was planted in the midst of fire.

What is the Key Verse for us today?

“But the Jews were jealous; so they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, formed a mob and started a riot in the city.” – Acts 17:5
