Turkey: Three Confirmed Dead Following Istanbul's Most Severe Rainfall in 80 Years.

Istanbul is grappling with devastating flash flooding following an unprecedented rainfall event—the most severe precipitation recorded since documentation began in 1942.The intense downpour, which commenced Wednesday morning and escalated throughout the night, has brought Turkey's largest city to a standstill, with streets, businesses, and residences now submerged beneath floodwaters. The tragedy has claimed at least three lives, with four additional individuals still unaccounted for. Among those lost are a 14-year-old boy who tragically suffered electrocution after stepping into standing water in a Fatih district park, a 34-year-old who succumbed to head injuries sustained from a fall on a Sariyer pavement, and a third person discovered near a Kağıthane park.Throughout the night, dedicated emergency personnel and rescue teams worked tirelessly to evacuate more than 2,700 individuals who found themselves stranded at workplaces and within vehicles. The floodwaters have swept away automobiles, overwhelmed underpasses, and severely disrupted all transportation networks. In Sakarya province, approximately 150 kilometers from the city, a two-story residence situated on a riverbed was completely destroyed.Istanbul Governor Davut Gül and city officials have activated comprehensive emergency protocols as rainfall persists. Schools throughout the region have been mandated to remain closed through Friday, October 16, 2026. Motorcycles have been prohibited from roadways to minimize accident risks. Non-essential government workers have been granted administrative leave.Citizens are strongly encouraged to remain at home and refrain from traveling except in genuine emergencies. Weather specialists caution that additional heavy rainfall is anticipated for Istanbul and neighboring areas in the coming days.Drawing on the most recent predictions from Turkey's State Meteorological Service (MGM), the governor's office issued a compassionate yet urgent alert about the incoming weather pattern, which carries the potential to bring additional flooding, dangerous lightning strikes, and landslides—especially considering that the intense rainfall experienced on Wednesday continues to leave communities vulnerable and its full impact has not yet diminished.
