Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, Part 3 - Told Mom She Planned It

Six days after she wrapped a boot lace around another inmate's neck, Christa Pike picked up a prison phone, called her mother, and explained the difference between that and what she'd done to Colleen Slemmer. This one, she said, she premeditated. The call was recorded, like every call from that prison, and it's the first thing you'll hear in chapter three of Satan's Helper: The Christa Pike Story, the Hidden Killers documentary on the Colleen Slemmer murder.

Tony works forward from the trial. The jury that sentenced Pike to death in March 1996 heard her confession through headphones and heard her say she wasn't going to be rotting in jail over Colleen. Her co-counsel would later describe a client who kept confessing in letters she was passing out. One of those letters, written the day she was sentenced, told Tadaryl Shipp to say he'd lied to police and go along with her version, and it bragged that she'd bashed Colleen's brains out so she'd die quickly. The Tennessee Supreme Court upheld the sentence in 1998 and wrote that particular cruelty was a phrase that only began to describe the killing.

Then the fire at the Tennessee Prison for Women on August 24, 2001, the recreation cage, and Patricia Jones. A corrections officer who grabbed Pike's hands testified Pike told her she was only helping. Pike told a prison investigator she'd brought the lace out on purpose and wouldn't lose any sleep if Jones died, and at her 2004 trial she admitted on cross that she kept choking Jones after Jones was unconscious. In 2012 the TBI broke up a plan to copy a prison key. On September 30, 2026, Tennessee tried to execute her and couldn't. Colleen's mother was in the witness room. Tony ends the series with her.
