Mega Edition: Opening Statements During Day 1 Of The Chad Daybell Trial (10/16/26)

Prosecutors opened Chad Daybell’s murder trial by portraying him as the architect of a conspiracy driven by sex, money and power. Madison County Prosecutor Rob Wood told jurors that Daybell had gone from a seemingly ordinary religious author and family man to someone who believed he was destined for something greater after meeting Lori Vallow. According to the state, Daybell and Vallow developed an apocalyptic belief system that allowed them to label people as evil, possessed or obstacles standing in the way of their relationship. Prosecutors argued that those beliefs helped justify the deaths of Lori’s children, 16-year-old Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old JJ Vallow, whose remains were later found buried on Daybell’s property, as well as the death of Daybell’s wife Tammy. Wood emphasized the sequence of events: the children disappeared, Tammy died soon afterward, and just 17 days later Daybell married Lori in Hawaii. The state told jurors that Daybell had made sure “no person and no law” stood between him and the life he wanted.

Defense attorney John Prior presented a sharply different picture, arguing that the evidence would show Lori Vallow and her brother Alex Cox were far more directly connected to the killings than Daybell. Prior portrayed Lori as manipulative and emphasized that Cox had repeatedly been on Daybell’s property, including around the periods when Tylee and JJ disappeared. He told jurors that forensic experts would testify that Daybell’s DNA and hair were not found on the children’s remains and that defense experts would challenge the state’s conclusion that Tammy Daybell had been murdered, pointing instead to her health problems and the possibility of a natural death. Prior urged jurors to focus on evidence rather than the disturbing beliefs, speculation and assumptions surrounding the case, arguing that Daybell’s unusual religious views did not prove murder. From the opening moments of the trial, the battle lines were clear: prosecutors depicted Daybell as the central figure who helped create the ideology and circumstances that led to three deaths, while the defense sought to shift responsibility toward Lori Vallow and Alex Cox and force the state to prove Daybell had personally participated in the killings.
