The Forests That Drink Clouds

The Forests That Drink Clouds

What if a forest could collect water directly from the clouds?

High in mountains and mist-covered landscapes, some forests do exactly that.

These remarkable ecosystems are known as cloud forests. Instead of relying only on rainfall, their trees, mosses, ferns, and other vegetation can capture tiny droplets of water suspended in fog and clouds.

The Forests That Drink Clouds explores how these unusual forests help turn airborne moisture into water that can eventually reach streams, rivers, and communities below.

When moist air rises along a mountain slope, it cools and can form clouds that surround the forest.

Leaves, branches, moss, and other surfaces intercept tiny droplets.

The droplets collect and merge until they become large enough to fall or run down the vegetation and into the soil.

This process is sometimes called fog harvesting or cloud-water interception.

The forest essentially becomes part of the water cycle.

Cloud forests can play an important role in regulating watersheds because the moisture they capture can supplement rainfall and help maintain streams during periods when conventional precipitation is limited.

Their dense vegetation also helps protect soil, slow runoff, and support complex ecosystems filled with specialized plants and animals.

But these forests are extremely sensitive to environmental changes.

Changes in temperature, cloud formation, humidity, and land use can alter the conditions they depend on.

As mountain climates change, some cloud forests may experience their cloud layers shifting higher, potentially reducing the amount of moisture available to the ecosystem.

The result is a fascinating relationship between forests and the atmosphere.

The trees aren't simply standing beneath the clouds.

They're interacting with them.

Every leaf, branch, moss-covered trunk, and tangled root can become part of a system that captures water moving through the air.

In a cloud forest, the boundary between land and sky becomes surprisingly thin.

The forest drinks from the clouds.

And in doing so, it helps feed the landscape below.
