Dr. Henry Lee: “Smeared blood, Smeared Reputation” | MURDERISH Ep. 147

Convicted in 1989 of the brutal murder of 65-year-old Everett Carr in New Milford, Connecticut, Ricky Birch and Shawn Henning were sentenced to 50 years behind bars without any physical evidence tying them to the crime scene. At trial, prosecutors had to explain to a jury how the two men, then only in their teens, managed to beat and stab their victim over 25 times without getting a single drop of his blood onto their clothing. To do so, the district attorney’s office relied on the testimony of the state’s top pathologist ..a man very well known to true crime content enthusiasts. A man by the name of Dr. Henry Lee. Today, Dr. Lee is considered one of the country’s foremost experts on forensic science. Birch and Henning spent decades in prison substantially based on Dr. Henry Lee’s testimony at their trial. More than 30 years after they were convicted, new information came to light and eventually led to their convictions being vacated in 2020. Subsequent to that, Dr. Henry Lee’s reputation would come under intense scrutiny and he found himself in legal trouble. The question now rests in the court of public opinion: Did Dr. Henry Lee make a devastating error on the witness stand? Or, did a man who’s investigated some of the country’s most prominent crimes of the last three decades lie to obtain a conviction? Michelle Carter: "Texting Murder" | Serial Streamers TV Club

On July 12, 2014 the body of 18-year-old Conrad Roy was discovered inside of his pickup truck. The teenager, who had a history of depression, died by suicide. At first, detectives had no reason to suspect foul play in Conrad's death, but they confiscated his cell phone anyway. After extracting data, detectives found thousands of text messages between Conrad and his girlfriend, 17-year-old Michelle Carter. The problem was that Michelle had been encouraging Conrad to kill himself in the weeks, days and minutes leading up to his death. The tragic incident then turned into a homicide investigation with Michelle Carter as the primary target. The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter case was the first of its kind in that the defendant was being charged with manslaughter due to the virtual presence she had during Conrad's death. The prosecution claimed that her words led to Conrad's death. In this episode, Jami walks listeners through the case and breaks down the docuseries I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth v. Michelle Carter. Join the Serial Streamers TV Club! Here’s how: Follow Jami on Instagram @JamiOnAir. Lawrence Family: “Collateral Damage” | MURDERISH Ep. 140

Lawrence Family: “Collateral Damage” | MURDERISH Ep. 140

When someone gets involved in the drug trade, violence usually isn’t far behind. It’s a dangerous path to tread where survival can hinge almost entirely upon alliances. If you piss off the wrong person, you might pay with your life. In the late 1980s, Missouri native Darrell Mease encountered an opportunity he couldn’t turn down. The 42-year-old carpenter was hired by Lloyd Lawrence, who happened to be a kingpin in a local methamphetamine ring. Instead of considering the danger he might face, Mease was blinded by dollar signs. This chance encounter set Mease’s life on a deeply violent trajectory. It would escalate into an extreme act of revenge outside a serene cabin in the Ozark mountains where an entire family would be murdered. Best of MURDERISH - E31 The "Smoked" Murders

The triple homicide, known as the “Halloween Massacre,” occurred in Pasadena, California in 1993. As rare as violent crimes are in Pasadena, the Halloween Massacre was the second triple homicide in the City in less than a three-year time span. On Friday, March 22, 1991, at about 2:30 in the morning, Pasadena police received a call asking them to do a welfare check at a posh home located on the 1300th block of Fairlawn Way. Officers arrived about 18 minutes later to find three deceased teenage girls. The brutal crime scene would haunt the lead detective until his dying day. In this episode of Murderish, I’ll walk you through the tragic murder of three teenagers, a crime for which no motive was ever uncovered. Learn more about your ad choices. Chad O’Melia: “Deaf to Justice” | MURDERISH Ep. 139

On a warm Southern California night in 2018, 23-year-old Vini Oliveira arrived home from working the late shift. He was greeted by two smiling faces - his roommate 26-year-old Chad O’melia and his new love interest, 27-year-old Bryn Spejcher. As Vini headed upstairs for bed, he left Chad and Bryn snuggling and laughing amongst themselves on the couch. After taking a shower and slipping into bed, Vini heard loud noises, and then screams, coming from downstairs. As he made his way down to the first floor, Vini could scarcely believe what he saw.
