Behind the Scenes: Running a Dating App with Inner Circle CEO Masha Kodden and dating expert Crystal Cansdale

Hellooooo! Welcome to Season 7, Episode 9 of Mads World! Behind the Scenes: Running a Dating App with Inner Circle's CEO, Masha Kodden, and resident dating expert, Crystal Cansdale! Through discussing dating apps every week on the podcast, I always wonder what it’s like behind the scenes of working at one. So this week I am joined by dating app Inner Circle's CEO, Masha Kodden, and their resident dating expert, Crystal Cansdale to learn all about it. Masha’s role as CEO is to lead the Inner Circle to success by setting daring strategies and growing market expansion. Before Inner Circle she has worked as a tech leader and in online businesses for over 20 years in both B2C and B2B marketing backgrounds. We are also joined by Crystal, Head of Communications for Inner Circle, and their resident dating expert. Her many, many years on the dating side of dating apps, combined with her career in online dating gives her a huge insight into the modern dating world and how singles can navigate it. Inner Circle calls themselves a high-quality dating app. Created from the belief that quality is better than quantity, the app dares singles to date better. 5 million career-driven singles - from all walks of life - across 66 cities in 29 countries, make up the Inner Circle community. The team behind the app screens each profile on safety, effort and mindset so members only see rich profiles from people they’d actually want to go on a date with. Members are then encouraged to meet through the app, at unique Inner Circle events and in real life. Couples get together every 6.6 seconds through Inner Circle and 116,000 couples have met someone through the app. In this episode we discuss what it takes to run a dating app and the challenges, what motivated the creation, the best stories they have had from users and what we expect moving into 2023. You can also expect some of our funniest dating stories, as per usual.  Submit your dating questions through madsworld.mp3, and my guests and I will answer them on the show! Masslighting: Toxic Masculinity and Internalised Misogyny with Dr Jessica Taylor

Masslighting: Toxic Masculinity and Internalised Misogyny with Dr Jessica Taylor

Hellooooo! Welcome to Season 7, Episode 8 of Mads World! Masslighting: Toxic Masculinity and Internalised Misogyny with Dr Jessica Taylor! This week I am joined by British author, feminist campaigner and psychologist Dr Jessica Taylor. Jess is the founder of VictimFocus, which she describes as "a company designed to challenge and change the victim blaming practices in social care, policing, mental health and support services all over the world”.In 2019, Jess completed her PhD in forensic psychology from the University of Birmingham with a thesis titled ‘Logically, I know I’m not to blame but I still feel to blame’: exploring and measuring victim blaming and self-blame of women who have been subjected to sexual violence. She was later recognized for her "contribution to the psychology of victim blaming of women, her work in mental health and her contribution to feminism" by the Royal Society of Arts.In 2020, Jess self-published her thesis as a book titled Why Women are Blamed for Everything. Based on three years of doctoral research and 10 years of practice with women and girls, the book focuses on the reasons why society and individual psychology blames women for male violence committed against them. This year, Jess published her second book, Sexy But Psycho: Uncovering the Labelling of Women and Girls through Constable. She described it as ”mixture of academic research, history, psychology and real-life stories of women and girls who have been told that they are mentally ill, instead of being listened to”. The book focuses on how mental illness has historically been used to discredit women, focusing especially on the 2000s and Britney Spears. In this episode, we talk about the effects of buzzwords like toxic and gaslighting, what terms like toxic masculinity and machismo actually mean and how this affects men and women independently, and unpacking internalized misogyny.Submit your dating questions through madsworld.mp3, and my guests and I will answer them on the show! Notes on Heartbreak: The Beauty, Pain and Messiness of Love with Annie Lord

Notes on Heartbreak: The Beauty, Pain and Messiness of Love with Annie Lord

Hellooooo! Welcome to Season 7, Episode 6 of Mads World! Notes on Heartbreak: The Beauty, Pain and Messiness of Love with Annie Lord! This week I am joined by author and Vogue columnist, Annie Lord! Annie has written for a number of publications including Vice, The Sunday Times, The Independent and she now has a dating column in Vogue. Annie joins me in this episode to speak all about her brilliant new book, Notes on Heartbreak, which I adored and chewed through cover to cover. The book is a fierce, honest and raw love story told in reverse, beginning with a devastating and unexpected break-up. As Annie goes through the rollercoaster of a broken heart, her beautiful memoir revisits the past, from the moment she first fell in love, the esoteric jokes and deep tangle of lives in a long-term relationship, to the months that saw the gradual breakdown of a five year long bond. I have to say, I cried a few times reading it (happy and sad tears). A stunning exploration of love and heartbreak, the book is so much more than a one about one singular break-up. It is an unflinchingly honest and candidly written story of the simultaneous joy and pain of being in love. If you’ve been through a break-up, this ones for you, a book about the best and worst of love: the euphoric and the painful, the beautiful and the messy. Schrodinger's Douchebag: Modern Misogyny with @TinderTranslators aka Aileen Barratt

Schrodinger's Douchebag: Modern Misogyny with @TinderTranslators aka Aileen Barratt

Hellooooo! Welcome to Season 7, Episode 5 of Mads World: Schrodinger's Douchebag with Aileen Barratt aka @tindertranslators! This episode of Mads World is sponsored by Kinkystreet. They’re new to town, promoting empowerment, body positivity, inclusivity and those who just want to have fun! Discover your kink with them at kinkystreet.co.uk, and use the code MadsWorld20 for 20% off your order. Aileen is a writer, digital marketer and the brains behind @TinderTranslators, an Instagram account that has amassed over 77k followers. Tinder Translation is all about decoding the subtext of Tinder bios and highlighting red flags. There is loads of innuendo and so many phrases used over and over dating apps, so much of what is said masks an alterior meaning. People send Aileen bios, which can be boring, dreadful, funny or arrogant and she translates them into what they really say about the person writing them. So much of what men write on dating apps is laced with misogyny, and it's her mission to unmask it. She has recently released a book, called Tinder Translator, an A-Z of Modern Misogyny. It’s a hilarious and eye opening feminist commentary on dating apps, shining a light on the blatant misogyny encountered during every swipe session. Scrolling through profile after profile, you'll see the same stock phrases: 'No drama', 'Must be able to hold a conversation' or my personal fave, 'Must have banter'. But what do they actually mean? There’s the funny and the not so funny, the blatant and the not so blatant, and scrolling through is depressing and enraging in equal measure. In this episode, we chat about everything Aileen has learned through her own years on dating apps, in addition to the experiences of thousands of her followers on Instagram, we dissect some of the stock phrases used on Tinder bios and hopefully leave you feeling a bit more empowered to push back on shitty behaviour or at least see the funny side.   Submit your dating questions through madsworld.mp3, and my guests and I will answer them on the show!
