Mini Mile #2 - Pets, Prints, Peter Sutcliffe and Self-Pleasure

This is Mini Mile, a weekly compendium of UK true-crime facts and trivia designed to accompany Murder Mile True-Crime Podcast and to entertain and inform you whilst your host (Michael) is writing and researching the next multi-part series of Murder Mile which returns in May 2019.

In Mini Mile #2 we’ll ask which infamous murderers loved their pets, we’ll investigate fingerprint powder, we’ll redefine serial killing, we’ll take a ride on London’s long forgotten railway of death, I’ll read you a particularly dull letter written by the Yorkshire Ripper and we’ll investigate the untold story of Soho’s Death Angel.

Murder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael J Buchanan-Dunne of Murder Mile Walks with music written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name with additional music by Kevin MacLeod and Chris Zabriski, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0 (Attribution) via Free Music Archive. #202 - The Soho Strangler - Part Six 'Dutch Leah: The Making of a Monster' (Soho, UK)

This is Part Six of Ten of The Soho Strangler.By May 1936, three women had been strangled, by an unknown assailant, in their own homes in Soho. With the Police investigation drawing to a familiar terrifying conclusion, that – with no witnesses or suspects – once again, the murder of a Soho prostitute will go unsolved. With no suspect to pin the murder on, the press conjure up a name – The Soho Strangler, and a myth is born. But did this help or hinder the investigation?Date: Friday 17th April 1936Location: 3rd Floor, Denard Manufacturing, 65 Margaret Street, W1Victim: 1 (Jeanne-Marie Cotton, also Marie or Jeanette Cousins)This is Britain's least known and long forgotten serial killerBlog - https://www.murdermiletours.com/blog/murder-mile-uk-true-crime-podcast-202-the-soho-strangler-part-six-dutch-leah-a-monster-in-the-makingMurder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. #201 - The Soho Strangler - Part Five 'Dutch Leah: A Forgotten Woman' (Soho, UK)

This is Part Five of Ten of The Soho Strangler.May 1936. Three weeks after and two street south of the murder of Marie Cotton, and just two streets east of French Fifi, ‘Dutch Leah’ a third sex-worker would be found strangled in her Soho flat, on the second floor of 66 Old Compton Street. Again, there were no obvious signs of break-in, robbery or sexual assault. Again, the only entry point was a locked street door off a busy street. And again, the killer left no fingerprints, no clues to his identity and witnesses to the murder. It’s as if this maniac had attacked and vanished into thin air. With two women slaughtered in similar circumstances just streets apart, again, the police had a prime suspect, a man known to the victim who had a method and a motive. But with two murders still unsolved and with no suspects, had they caught a killer, or another scapegoat for their incompetence? With a panic rumbling across Soho, as women wondered how safe they were in their own beds, as much as the police refused to believe it, their last option was one too terrifying to consider……that a serial-killer stalked these very streets, who the press would dub - The Soho Strangler.Date: Friday 8th / Saturday 9th May 1936 between 12:30am and 2:30pmLocation: 2nd Floor, 66 Old Compton Street, Soho, W1Victim: 1 (Constance May Hind/Smith, alias 'Dutch Leah')This is Britain's least known and long forgotten serial killerBlog - https://www.murdermiletours.com/blog/murder-mile-uk-true-crime-podcast-201-the-soho-strangler-part-five-dutch-leah-a-forgotten-womanMurder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. #200 - The Soho Strangler - Part Four 'The Mysterious Death by a Lodger' (Soho, UK)

This is Part Four of Ten of The Soho Strangler.By the morning of Friday 17th April 1936, word had spread around Soho that 43-year-old Jeanne-Marie Cotton had been murdered; strangled in her own flat, using her own scarf, with no suspects or motive. It seemed like a random unprovoked attack on a defenceless woman for no reason. It was a case which would have been forgotten, until it was connected to an unnervingly similar murder two streets south and five months earlier upon another French brunette in her early forties. Was this a coincidence?Date: Friday 17th April 1936Location: 3rd Floor, Denard Manufacturing, 65 Margaret Street, London, UK, W1Victim: 1 (Jeanne-Marie Cotton, also Marie or Jeanette Cousins)This is Britain's least known and long forgotten serial killersBlog - https://www.murdermiletours.com/blog/murder-mile-uk-true-crime-podcast-200-the-soho-strangler-part-four-the-ordinary-murder-by-a-lodgerMurder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. #199 - The Soho Strangler - Part Three 'The Mysterious Death of a Landlady' (Soho, UK)

This is Part Three of Ten of The Soho Strangler.Five months later, the murder of Soho prostitute ‘French Fifi’ was forgotten. On Thursday 16th April 1936, the body of 43-year-old French national Jeanne-Marie Cotton was found dead in her flat. Initially mistaken for an accident or natural causes, a more in-depth-investigation would prove it to be murder, only no-one had noticed the shocking similarities between the mysterious death of Marie Cotton and French Fifi, just two streets south.Date: Thursday 16th April 1936 between 5:30pm and 7:30pmLocation: 2nd Floor, 47 Lexington Street, Soho, London, UK W1Victim: 1 (Jeanne-Marie Cotton, also Marie or Jeanette Cousins)This is Britain's least known and long forgotten serial killersBlog - https://www.murdermiletours.com/blog/murder-mile-uk-true-crime-podcast-200-the-soho-strangler-part-four-the-ordinary-murder-by-a-lodgerMurder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0. This is Part Two of Ten of The Soho Strangler.Having discovered the body of 41-year-old prostitute 'French Fifi' in her bedroom, the police surgeon had determined that that her death was "most probably a suicide" given all the evidence placed before him. But what it a suicide, or was this the first fledgling killing by The Soho Strangler.Date: Monday 4th November 1935 between 2am and 4amLocation: Flat 1, 3rd Floor, 3-4 Archer Street, Soho, London, UK, W1Victim: 1 (Josephine Mechanique/Martin, alias 'French Fifi')This is Britain / London's unknown and long forgotten serial killerBlog - https://www.murdermiletours.com/blog/murder-mile-uk-true-crime-podcast-200-the-soho-strangler-part-four-the-ordinary-murder-by-a-lodgerMurder Mile is researched, written and performed by Michael of Murder Mile Walks with the main musical themes written and performed by Erik Stein and Jon Boux of Cult With No Name and additional music, as used under the Creative Commons License 4.0.
