Children of the Cult: Joy Cranham from The Family Survival Trust

Today's guest is Joy Cranham from the Family Survival Trust, a charity that specialises in helping victims of cults and supports the families of those impacted. Joy's own background is as a born-in member of the Exclusive Brethren (also known as the Plymouth Brethren) so we talk about her childhood, and reflect on the hundreds of thousands of children raised in highly controlling groups with frightening beliefs. Joy also talks about the work of the Family Survival Trust and more generally how to educate society to understand damaging cults and what to do about them.

Leaving a group that told you who you were, what to believe and how to think means struggling to construct an identity of your own. How does being an 'ex' impact upon identity? Today dad talks about his own experience as a former Jehovah's Witness and explains some of the psychological research into these types experiences.    References Hookway, N. S., & Habibis, D. Ep 17. Queen's Gambit

This week Celine and Stephen review the Netflix short series 'The Queen's Gambit'. One of the most surprising hits of the year it tells the story of orphan Beth as she learns chess from the janitor and then goes on to take on the world. It's a great personal story about a talented and troubled young woman and even makes chess seem cool. This episode contains spoilers so if you haven't seen it, watch 'The Queen's Gambit' first and then listen to the podcast.
