In 2012, Nadine Aburas met Sammy Almahri through an online dating website. Nadine was looking for love, and her sister suggested that online dating might be the way. At first, the pair hit it off even though Nadine lived in Wales and Sammy lived in the United States. But it soon became apparent that Sammy had a controlling nature.
