James Rhee | How To Turn A National Chain Store & A Life Around By Being Kind - And Doing Some Math

James Rhee | How To Turn A National Chain Store & A Life Around By Being Kind - And Doing Some Math

Here is a business story, that is really a humanitarian story, but overall is an incredible story of drive I believe you’ll be inspired and equipped by. The story would make a great movie, and since my guest actually roomed with Matt Damon in college, it just might become one. James Rhee’s parents migrated to America from Korea. James was driven to excel and please his parents, so he got into Harvard. But he really wanted to teach, so he then taught high school for a couple years. Some of his most rewarding years he says. But then he went back to Harvard and graduated from law school. But he realized he didn’t want to be a lawyer so he became an investment banker. He did well, but realized he didn’t want to do that either. So he worked in private equity. He did well. Very well. He appreciated helping businesses, but didn’t like how disconnected he was from everything. So he quit and didn’t know what to do. Then he ends up in an unlikely place - as CEO of Ashley Stewart, a fashion retailer that served plus-size, predominantly middle- and lower-income Black women. And the company was at its end. The death knell had sounded. James came in for what was supposed to be six months because he felt an obligation to help. He ended up there for seven years with a miracle turnaround story that he’s now described in a book called Red Helicopter: Lead Change With Kindness. You'll hear a very personal story of James' drive, from healthy to unhealthy. You'll hear about how Ashley Stewart went from death to stardom because it became a place and brand of belonging, not fashion. You'll hear how success came, not from communication, but connection. And most of all you'll hear how goodwill is the bridge to not only wild success, but abiding joy. Today James Rhee teaches at Howard University, MIT Sloan School of Management, and Duke Law School. His TED Talk and Dare to Lead interview with Brené Brown have reached millions. It was an honor to spend a couple hours with him and as you’ll hear at the end of the show we’re planning a t-shirt campaign together to advocate for the “analog life!” Head to airdoctorpro.com and use promo code KEVIN and depending on the model receive UP TO 39% off or UP TO $300 off! Scott Allender #1 | Emotional Intelligence & How To Succeed By Becoming Radically Self-Aware

Scott Allender #1 | Emotional Intelligence & How To Succeed By Becoming Radically Self-Aware

Our world applauds people with a high IQ. And yet someone having a high IQ has zero value to me personally. It may have no value for that person or anyone. It merely says they have the possibility of capacity. It doesn’t mean they can or will do anything worthwhile with it, and even if they are brilliant and figure out how to live on Mars, they may be miserable and make everyone else miserable. So what is a better measuring stick for overall potential than IQ? I submit to you it is EQ. Emotional quotient. Or emotional intelligence. My guest today is an expert and cites that emotional intelligence as the single biggest predictor of our personal and professional success. Scott Allender is an expert in global leadership and organizational development. Along with co-hosting The Evolving Leader podcast, he regularly teaches Enneagram workshops and conducts typing interviews and emotional intelligence assessments for individuals and teams who seek to become more radically self-aware and cognizant of the impact they have on the world. His new book is titled, The Enneagram of Emotional Intelligence: A Journey to Personal and Professional Success. Let me candidly offer to you that my inspiration for this show is my own journey of becoming more…much more…emotionally intelligent. In the past I thought I was, as most emotionally unintelligent people believe. I let some things I was good at, like controlling my emotional expression and my social awareness trick me into thinking I was emotionally intelligent. And the truth that finally reared its ugly head was that I was very emotionally unintelligent. Join me as we change some paradigms and give some hope to what you can become. Peak Wellness | Why Placebos Are More Important Than Real Medicine

Peak Wellness | Why Placebos Are More Important Than Real Medicine

Everyone has heard of “the placebo effect” and it’s usually thought of negatively. We don’t want mind games to fix us, we want a literal ingredient or treatment. But here is the deal, your attitude and expectations can cause a placebo to heal you, or cause a literally beneficial treatment to fail you. What you expect has a dramatic effect on your reality. That’s not conjecture, it’s clinical. Do you expect your exercise to enhance your health? Do you expect your nutritional supplements to enhance your health? Do you expect your efforts to eat healthy to enhance your health? The bigger issue is your awareness of how you feel and what you expect from all your efforts. If you have doubt or bitterness in regards to any of your efforts you are likely sabotaging them. But you’ll be incredibly well served to increase your positive expectations of improvement. I’m joined of course by Randy James, Medical Doctor, Functional Medicine and owner of truelifemedicine.com, and you’re about to hear how he and I have great faith that our expectations are incredibly powerful placebos in our overall levels of health and wellness. Hala Taha #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin - How To Eliminate Failure In Your Life When You Understand The Goal Beyond The Goal

Hala Taha #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin - How To Eliminate Failure In Your Life When You Understand The Goal Beyond The Goal

This is part four in my series on The Art of Trying. My muse has been Hala Taha, host of the top ranked business podcast, Young and Profiting and founder and CEO of YAP Media. Talking with Hala about her trajectory of trying and trying different things on the way to what worked, for her overall goal, has been eye opening. When we understand our goal is bigger than any one role or face-value achievement, it takes the pressure off and greatly broadens the different methods we can…try. And if one method doesn’t work, it’s ok. We know the bigger, greater goal, and can attempt it through another means and method and quite literally make failure impossible. Let’s talk through it briefly. And find Hala Taha wherever you listen to podcasts at Young & Profiting, and on social media at yapwithhala. Hala Taha #3 | Discussion w/ Renée Marino - How To Commit To Your Destination But Quit Any Vehicle That’s Not Getting You There

Hala Taha #3 | Discussion w/ Renée Marino - How To Commit To Your Destination But Quit Any Vehicle That’s Not Getting You There

This is part 3 in our series on the Art of Trying. The previous two episodes have featured Hala Taha, host of the top ranked business podcast, Young and Profiting and founder and CEO of YAP Media, a business podcast network with an award-winning social media and podcast marketing agency for top podcasters, celebrities and CEOs. Hala is a rockstar at trying and failing until she figures out what works. Then succeeding. In this episode I brought on a fellow rock star of the art of trying. Broadway and movie star, Renée Marino who you can see as the lead female role in Clint Eastwood’s movie, Jersey Boys. Renée is a frequent co-host with me because she’s an expert in personal development and a master communicator…her book is called, “Becoming A Master Communicator”. As an actress, Renée Marino’s job was trying and failing. You do audition after audition and get told no, until you get told yes. And it’s only one “Yes!” to a movie like Jersey Boys and boom, you’ve made it to the big screen. Renée brought us to looking at whatever we do and go after, any achievement, there is something deeper we are trying to fulfill that gives us space to try and fail or quit many things, on the way to what works, for the ultimate goal we are striving for. If her only goal was to be the lead in one show or movie, that is narrow and limiting. If her goal was to perform, and bigger to entertain, and bigger to communicate, and at the core to communicate, she can do that in so many ways. You’ll gain some incredibly liberating perspectives in this episode. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. Hala Taha #2 | What Drives Her - Define Your Values & Stay True To Yourself When You Can’t Think Logically

Hala Taha #2 | What Drives Her - Define Your Values & Stay True To Yourself When You Can’t Think Logically

I’m back with Hala Taha in my series on the art of trying. This is part two, my “What Drives You” episode and I walk through the key areas of life and what drives Hala. Before even diving into specifics like spirituality, relationships, and health & wellness, we simply talk about Hala’s overall drive, as she shared in the previous episode how her initial drive was fueled by her father who immigrated to the US, and an expectation to become a doctor like the rest of her siblings. This is where she shared her commitment to consistently define her values so they would see her through in challenging times when you can’t think logically. This was significant to me and we dug in deeper to this. We then start off with spirituality and get on the topic of how we are all brainwashed in our upbringing and need to re-brainwash ourselves toward what we truly…value. Hala Taha #1 | Master The Arts Of Trying & Failing In Order To Succeed

Hala Taha #1 | Master The Arts Of Trying & Failing In Order To Succeed

This kicks off a 4-part series where my primary muse is…the art of trying. In the personal development world we give a lot of pithy lipservice to trying, quitting and failure…I could add rejection as well. But as a culture, even amongst aspiring people like us, I feel we often fail to grasp a healthy and productive perspective on these concepts. My guest expert on the topic is Hala Taha. Hala is host of the Young and Profiting (YAP) Podcast, frequently ranked as a #1 Business and Entrepreneurship podcast across all apps. Hala is also the founder and CEO of YAP Media, a business podcast network with an award-winning social media and podcast marketing agency for top podcasters, celebrities and CEOs. I met Hala at a podcasting convention and discovered she has quite a story. Her pedigree of success runs parallel to an impressive rap sheet of failures. Things she’s tried that didn’t work out. Things she quit until she found what worked. Overall you see a committment to succeed that kept her persevering until she did just that. Found what worked. I invited her onto the show to help us find more willingness and comfort in trying things. And try. And try different methods until we find what works to achieve the overall goal of success…in whatever way success looks like to you. We also ended with a brief masterclass on branding you won’t want to miss. Find Hala on your podcast app at Young and Profiting, and I encourage you to whether you consider yourself young or not. She’s recently had Lewis Howes and Seth Godin on. The Self Helpful podcast is brought to you by Ziglar, your premier source for equipping coaches. Peak Wellness | How To Mitigate & Manage Your Genetic Set Points

Peak Wellness | How To Mitigate & Manage Your Genetic Set Points

I really want life to be only what we make it. And deny any genetic limitations. And yet realize we do in fact have some genetic set points that can help, and hinder us. I’ve suffered by denying any genetic hindering. But our culture by far and large I see suffering by blaming too much on genetics. The big question is…how much of an impact do they have on your health? We are not here to discount the role of genetics, and yet the goal is to take as much agency as possible. The goal is to give you hope that you are not a victim to your genetics. So let’s discuss wow much of a role they play in your health and wellness and what can you do to compensate for and negate them? I’m of course joined by my Peak Wellness co host, Randy James, Medical Doctor and Functional Medicine expert, who walks with patients every day as they pursue their best wellness amongst all varieties of genetic challenges. Dandapani #4 | Lessons w/ Kevin - Focus & 6 Lessons From A Former Monk & Current Master

This is my wrap up from what I’m working to learn from this series on focus and our expert, Dandapani, world renowned, leading expert on leveraging the human mind and the power of focus, and author of, The Power of Unwavering Focus. I was fortunate to have two, long conversations with Dandapani from his Siva Ashram in Costa Rica, with the second discussion being a deep dive into a controversial view on spirituality that was profound for me. I think we’ll have some follow up discussions that I’ll be eager to share with you. As I reviewed my notes from the series on focus, I found six key lessons bubble to the surface, and I’ll talk through the concepts with you now.  You can now watch full episodes on YouTube!
