Ep 123: The Murder of Sarah Everard: A Deep Dive into the Culture of the Metropolitan Police Service with Henry Riley

In this episode Laura talks with special guest Henry Riley, LBC journalist, about Sarah Everard’s abduction, rape and murder by Wayne Couzens, a Metropolitan Police officer. What followed was a nationwide outpouring of grief, shock and anger. Women shared stories of male violence whilst the Metropolitan Police downplayed Couzen’s as an unfortunate ‘bad apple’ and declared he ‘was not a police officer.’ Since Sarah we’ve heard nonstop about police officer’s including David Carrick perpetrating abuse and violence towards women. More recently Wayne Couzen’s extensive indecent exposure history was revealed, and the fact women reported him but the Metropolitan Police Service failed to act. Henry shares his investigation into PC Terry Melka, a police officer convicted of indecent exposure who is still a serving Metropolitan police officer. Laura details her experience of working in the Metropolitan Police and how police perpetrators were dealt with. This important interview was recorded on the day Baroness Louise Casey published her deeply disturbing 363-page report detailing institutional racism, sexism, misogyny and homophobia in the Metropolitan Police.
