1013: Big Dairy | Skeptical Sunday

Big Dairy's impact on health and policy is udderly shocking. Michael Regilio milks the truth from this cash cow of an industry on Skeptical Sunday!

Welcome to Skeptical Sunday, a special edition of The Jordan Harbinger Show where Jordan and a guest break down a topic that you may have never thought about, open things up, and debunk common misconceptions. This time around, we’re joined by skeptic, comedian, and podcaster Michael Regilio!

On This Week's Skeptical Sunday:
  • Milk consumption by adults has not been natural for most of human history. About 65% of the global population has reduced ability to digest lactose, with some populations experiencing nearly 100% lactose intolerance.
  • The dairy industry, with government support, has heavily promoted milk consumption despite questionable health benefits. This includes school milk programs and marketing campaigns like "Got Milk?"
  • Raw milk can be dangerous, potentially causing diseases like typhoid and tuberculosis. Pasteurization made milk safer, but the dairy industry initially resisted it.
  • The US government has repeatedly subsidized and bailed out the dairy industry, including buying surplus milk and cheese. This has led to an artificial inflation of the dairy market.
  • Good news for the lactose averse: there are many alternative sources for the nutrients found in milk. People can obtain calcium from foods like almonds, figs, kale, tofu, and sweet potatoes. By exploring these options, people can make informed dietary choices that align with their health needs and preferences.

You and your direct boss had a secret affair, and he asked you not to disclose it to your company's vetting agency for fear of losing his security clearance. Now it's years later and you want to come clean to the agency, but how can you do so without it coming off as petty revenge? When your uncle passed away suddenly, you felt remorse that you never tried to talk to him about the signs of depression he was showing. Now you don't want to make the same mistake with his son, who's clearly struggling with similar issues. But where do you even begin? You and your partner of five years recently split up after talking about how there isn't a path forward for you because opportunities forced you into a long-distance relationship -- even though you are still in love and so compatible otherwise. It feels like a wrong decision; how can you be sure you've explored every option? How might someone grasping at gratitude cultivate a more giving mindset? 451: Jason Silva | Origins of a Performance Philosopher

451: Jason Silva | Origins of a Performance Philosopher

Jason Silva (@JasonSilva) would have been called a “performance philosopher” by counterculture icon Timothy Leary. Among many things, he’s a futurist, filmmaker, creator of short video series Shots of Awe, and host of the National Geographic Channel’s Brain Games and Origins: The Journey of Humankind. What We Discuss with Jason Silva: How our concepts of self are formed — often through the eyes of others — and how they affect our behavior. How top performers excel by shutting down the editorial parts of the human brain coined by Buddhists as the monkey mind. Why “unscripted” isn’t the same as “unprepared,” and how videos can be edited to elicit altered states of consciousness. How good directors help performers get out of their heads — while bad directors do just the opposite. How is day-to-day reality edited by context, similar to the Kuleshov effect demonstrated by Alfred Hitchcock? And much more! 450: Frank Maderal | The Dirty Money Behind Illicit Gold Smuggling

Frank Maderal is a litigator and trial attorney (as featured on Netflix's Dirty Money) whose work has given him an intimate knowledge of illicit gold mining and smuggling operations that wreak environmental, social, and economic havoc on a global scale. What We Discuss with Frank Maderal: Why gold is such an ideal, sought-after medium by criminal enterprises for laundering billions of dollars every year. How unethical methods of gold mining -- both illegal and quasi-legal -- have a devastating, irreparable impact on the environments in which they operate and the people who live there. Money laundering 101: how it works on a global scale, what gives it away to law enforcement, and why gold makes its trail harder to trace even when the evidence is seemingly hiding in plain sight. Why otherwise on-the-level gold traders are increasingly turning to illegal means of aggregation (whether knowingly or not). What law enforcement is doing to make the illicit gold trade a more difficult business for its top-level players and deliberately ignorant enablers. And much more... Your significant other is hyper-productive and passionate, but you suspect their motivation is hitched to bipolar tendencies that take their toll on you. What are some strategies you can build to deal with this type of personality and keep yourself sane? A past business partnership turned sour and went bust. While you've moved on and started your own successful business since then, you can't help but harbor ill will for your past partner and how things went down. How can you just get over it, already? Already the parents of a special needs child, you made the difficult decision to terminate a pregnancy that would have resulted in another. Unfortunately, your in-laws were religiously opposed to the option you chose and you had to exaggerate the diagnosis for their support. How do you strike a balance between the part these in-laws play in your life and your own family's autonomy? In your 30s, you changed careers to a frontline job in healthcare. It gave you personal fulfillment and more money, but also a challenging lifestyle with lots of on-call time while raising two children. Now that your kids are older, should you commit your last working years to "contributing to the profession," or is it okay to finish out your career continuing to focus on giving great care to your patients? On the networking list you created for Six-Minute Networking, you tend to mostly include older professionals with more experience. Is this the right way to go, or should you stay connected with your peers as well? Have any questions, comments, or stories you'd like to share with us? Drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com! Srdja Popovic (@SrdjaPopovic) is the author of Blueprint for Revolution: How to Use Rice Pudding, Lego Men, and Other Nonviolent Techniques to Galvanize Communities, Overthrow Dictators, or Simply Change the World. What We Discuss with Srdja Popovic: What do revolutions and businesses have in common? Why nonviolence is more popular -- and more effective -- than violence. Why there are no charismatic leaders in the most successful revolutions. How to make a revolution cool by using comedy. 447: Stephen Schwarzman | Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence

Stephen Schwarzman is the chairman and CEO of The Blackstone Group, an investor, a philanthropist, and the author of What It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence. What We Discuss with Stephen Schwarzman: How did Stephen turn being paired with a Nazi roommate at Yale into a learning experience? Why it's as hard to achieve small goals as bigger ones -- except larger goals have more significant consequences (and what entrepreneurs can gain from this perspective). What Stephen learned from working a summer wiping down grease in a Scandanavian ship's 120-degree engine room. Why Stephen considers candor fundamental to the operation of a healthy organization. 446: How to Help Your Suicidal Partner | Feedback Friday

Your significant other has gone through more than most in this seemingly cursed year, but any attempt on your part to help ease the pain is interpreted as a sinister affront. Worse, there's talk of suicide as a better option than the continued depression of quarantine. how do you help your suicidal partner? We'll dig into this and more here on Feedback Friday. And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! Now let's dive in! Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/446 On This Week's Feedback Friday, We Discuss: Great Mondays author Josh Levine suggests this thought exercise for business owners who want to understand the value of their organization beyond making money: ask your employees to write an obituary for your company. He likes doing this in teams of eight to 12 colleagues, and having each group come up with three to five paragraphs memorializing their company -- listing its accomplishments, its impact on the world, that kind of thing. The groups then share their obituaries and identify the most compelling phrases, with the goal of coming up with a short mission statement. Your significant other has gone through more than most in this seemingly cursed year, but any attempt on your part to help ease the pain is interpreted as a sinister affront. Worse, there's talk of suicide as a better option than the continued depression of quarantine. how do you help your suicidal partner? You're lucky and grateful to have a healthy nest egg and a home that's paid in full while so many are struggling to survive through these tough times. The thing is, you can't help feeling guilty for your good fortune, and you feel like you need to justify it. How do you drop the shame of being well off when everyone around you seems to be down and out? Your parents take the fact that you voted for the other side this past election as a sign they failed to raise you right, and their fear-driven conspiracy rambling is especially disheartening. Still, you've agreed to go to their house next weekend for walks and hard talks that are supposed to make adult families closer, but where do you even begin? Sometimes getting fired by a boss who makes empty promises is a favor in disguise, but when it's for voicing your frustrations after being asked for them, might you have grounds for a wrongful termination lawsuit?
