#149 Running with Back Pain & Scoliosis: the Role of the Spine, Ribs, and Pelvis in Running

This episode is all about the back! Andrea is joined by Dr. Jeanne Halloran to take a deep dive into scoliosis and its effects on athletes. They explore the pathology and symptoms of scoliosis, the structure of the back and how it influences running mechanics, strategies and exercises to improve rib and spine mobility and more. Jeanne also lends us her expertise in Schroth therapy. The Schroth Method is a conservative treatment option for scoliosis–a curve specific exercise method that was developed in the 1920's by Katharina Schroth. It is a 3 dimensional approach that focuses on breathing and exercise techniques tailored to the individual.

Jeanne Halloran, PT, DPT earned her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from New York University in 2004 & Schroth-Barcelona BSPTS C1 certification in January 2019 and C2 certification in January 2020. She completed her SEAS 1 Cerification in May 2019. Jeanne evaluates, casts and fits custom orthotics and is trained in kinesiotaping. She has participated in continuing education course diversifying her manual skills including Maitlin, Mulligan, movement with Shirley Sahrman and sports medicine with Kevin Wilk. Jeanne is certified in Mat Pilates with Power Pilates and trained in Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization. Jeanne is also an avid runner who is always training for a race, whose goal is to be injury free and to get her patients back to sport and activities that they love. She practices at CT Scoliosis and Spine Rehab in Ridgefield, CT. You can find their practice online on Instagram and Facebook. To find a Schroth-certified PT in your area, check out this website.

#245 Between Two Feet: Brooks Hyperion Max 3 and Do Super Trainers Make Good Racing Shoes?

Matt & Andrea are back with another installation of Between Two Feet, where they contrast their different experiences in a shoe. Last time it was the Nike Vaporfly 4, and this time it's the Brooks Hyperion Max 3. Brooks completely overhauled the Hyperion Max, one of Andrea's favorite shoes of the past few years, and turned it into a true max-stack supertrainer. With a Pebax plate & a dual-density DNA Flash/DNA Gold midsole, this one's meant for the long miles. Matt & Andrea discuss how their different mechanics affect how they experienced the foam, weight, and geometry of the shoe. They wrap up by offering some supertrainer options as alternatives to super racing shoes.Get your DOR Merch: https://doctors-of-running.myspreadshop.com/Get 20% off your first order from Skratch with code: DOCTORSOFRUNNING!Chapters0:00 - Intro4:47 - Upper9:15 - Midsole22:19 - Supertrainers as alternative racing shoes28:08 - Wrap up

#243 Between Two Feet: Nike Vaporfly 4 and the Impact of Geometry Changes to a Shoe

If you've been following us for a while, you know that Matt & Andrea often experience shoes completely differently, so on this episode they get together to compare & contrast their experiences in Nike's major overhaul to the OG of supershoes: the Vaporfly 4. With a shorter stack height and narrowed down platform, this nimble racer offers a vastly different ride from its big sibling, the Alphafly 3. Andrea loved Vaporfly 3, so how will she feel about the updates? Matt's often found the Vaporflys too unstable, so will that continue? Tune in to see if you side more with Andrea or Matt!
