S2E4: Demystifying ”The Retreat”: An Interview with Thanapol Virulhakul

In this episode, we take you all the way to TPAM Performing Arts Meeting in Yokohama, Japan, to talk to Thai dancer-choreographer Thanapol Virulhakul. Thanapol is the director of “Hipster the King,” “Post Show Talk with Pina Bausch and Dancers,” and “Transaction.” His latest piece, “The Retreat,” was selected to be part of TPAM Direction in February. “The Retreat” had its world premiere in Thailand in 2018 before being selected to do an open workshop at TPAM last year. This work by Thanapol has caused much confusion among audiences as to what the performers were doing and what the piece is about. So we talk to Thanapol about the process of this piece, its development, and what he wants to say about the human body, art, and our society through “The Retreat.” . *We decided to postpone the release of this episode to make room for an episode that’s directly about the pandemic. Initially, we were concerned whether this interview would be still be relevant to the current situation and to a world that seems to have completely transformed in a matter of weeks. Moreover, the show and the festival had ended more than a few months ago. But as we discussed briefly in Episode 3, many of the issues and questions raised in “The Retreat” are actually quite pertinent to the current crisis. Plus, the thought of coronavirus wasn’t far from people’s mind at TPAM as the Diamond Princess cruise ship was quarantined at the Yokohama port during that time.
