Remember The Game? #49 - Ice Hockey

Remember The Game? #49 - Ice Hockey

In a world where sports video games have become deep, complex, virtual simulations of their real-life counterparts, Ice Hockey still stands out. It's the epitome of the saying "Less is More". Sure, if you're looking for a hockey game where you can develop rosters, play 100+ hours of a franchise, and manage my salary cap, there are better options. But if you just want to play a quick game of hockey against a friend, and have a really good time doing it, it's still hard to beat Ice Hockey. It's not a very deep game. You play against either the computer or a friend in a single game, and that's it. No seasons or tournaments. You get to pick from one of six national teams, and then you make up your four man roster. You can pick between skinny players (fast but wimpy), medium players (meh), and heavy/fat players (slow but powerful), and you can mix and match to create any combination of four that you want. And within that lies the genius of Ice Hockey. Do you roll with a team of four skinny players, skate circles around your opponent, but get knocked off the puck every time somebody sneezes? Or do you load up on heavyweights and just hope the other team skates into one of your guys? It might not be as deep as navigating the AHL looking for a fourth line winger, but it works perfectly. The combinations are practically endless. I guess technically there's 256 combinations. But whatever. The gameplay is insanely simplistic and easy to pick up. Steer your highlighted player with the D-pad. "A" passes or steals, and "B" shoots or changes players. The D-pad controls your goalie at the same time, which is also really fun. I'd argue that controlling the goalie in Ice Hockey is as fun as controlling the goalie in any hockey game ever made. And that's it. Most of the basic rules from hockey are here, and you just try to score more goals than your opponent. There's no load times, no rosters updates, it's just simple, arcade hockey. And it's awesome. Most people compare Ice Hockey to it's NES counterpart Blades of Steel. I knew a ton of people that owned one, but I don't think I knew anybody that owned both. I preferred Blades of Steel as a kid, but I think Ice Hockey has held up infinitely better over the years. It recently released on the Nintendo Switch as part of their NES Online service, and I can confirm it's as fun to pick up and play today as it was over thirty years ago. It's not perfect; and it certainly isn't worth paying anymore than a few bucks for these days. But for my money, it's the Ric Flair of Nintendo sports games. One of the all-time greats, and I love it. My buddy David Rae does too. He's my guest this week, and we had a ton of laughs talking Ice Hockey. I hope you guys enjoy this one as much as we did!

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Everyone around RTG Industries knows I love the NES, and the best games in the NES library are practically royalty around here. That exclusive list includes the Mario trilogy, both Contras, a ton of Mega Man, and of course, the legendary Mike Tyson's Punch-Out...  I have been trying to beat this game on and off for almost 35 years and still haven't reached the top of the mountain. For the longest time, Soda Popinski was my kryptonite. I couldn't beat him as a kid, and he just held court over me (is that a term?) every time I went up against him. I've finally slayed that demon, but the illusive Mike Tyson victory still evades me. For now, anyway. But that doesn't matter. Modern tough games make me crazy, but NES tough games are my torture of choice. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Punch-Out, and every couple years I fall into its clutches and spend a month or two swearing at little ref Mario. It's practically a perfect game and I'll tell you why on this episode. And before I get knocked out, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks where most of our listeners are located, so I share some stats. Is there a genre of game I discovered later in life and fell in love with? And what 5 Switch games would I recommend to a newcomer? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 NES sports classics: Tecmo Super Bowl, Ice Hockey, and Baseball Stars. Learn more about your ad choices. Patreon.com/RememberTheGame And you can find ye olde Bradley McCue here: Instagram: @TheGamingOdyssey Twitch.tv/VideoGameOdyssey OKami took down Max Payne in the finals of the 2025 Pre-March Madness Patreon Poll Tournament Extravaganza, and after almost 30 hours of playtime, I'm ready to talk about. I agree with everyone that says this game is stunning to look at and the soundtrack is superb. It's creative and tells a story. Honestly, I like almost everything about Okami. Except, playing it... It definitely has some Zelda DNA in it and that isn't a bad thing at all. You're solving puzzles, acquiring power-ups, running through fields. You get to play as a wolf which is rad. I just didn't find the actual gameplay mechanics that interesting. The paintbrush mechanic is sic, but I feel it was under utilized. The combat is kinda boring. And while the writing is really solid (and funny), there's just a little too much of it. My buddy Bradley McCue returns to the show this week. He's a Zelda diehard and liked Okami a little more than I did. I thought it was a work of art that I just didn't want to play, whereas Bradley thought it lived up to the Zelda DNA coursing through its veins. We had a pretty good discussion about this one, so whether you love this game or not, I hope/think you'll enjoy this episode. And before we try to get Issun laid, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks what console has the best ratio of good games to bad in its library? What are my favourite video game quotes? And have I ever turned anything really cool down in my careers as a comedian or podcaster? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 great games where you play as animals: Donkey Kong Country, Sonic 2, and Crash Bandicoot. It's too bad they kinda suck. I think you could fire up World Series of Poker today and be pretty underwhelmed. It's ugly, the career mode is pretty thin, and the AI is trash. But back in 2005 when I fell in love with poker and didn't have the bankroll to play at the casino, this was where I got my fix when I couldn't get a home game together. I have a soft, soft spot in my heart for not only the WSOP video games, but WPT and Stacked as well, and I get into all of them this week in a rare solo episode. And before I shuffle up and deal, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I've ever written any jokes about gaming for my comedy act? This was like visiting an old friend, albeit an old friend that'll shank you into the rough and screw you over every chance it gets. By today's standards, Hot Shots probably seems a little archaic. It's the classic 3-click system, the graphics are, well, PSOne graphics, and the gameplay can be brutally unforgiving. But look beyond that and what you have is the ground work for a series that so many people have fallen in love with over the years. I wouldn't necessarily say I prefer these to Mario Golf, but there's an argument for sure. My guest this week is the official referee of RTG, Mike The Ref. We both love sports games, and as such, both love Hot Shots Golf. We talk about how tough this game can be, how far the genre has come, and of course, the legendary Hot Shots multiplayer. And before we tee off, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks about Nintendo's consumer-unfriendly practices (which I agree with). I beat that same night and I was crushed. but ever since then, I've enjoyed every Kirby game I've played. And after 100%ing Kirby 64, I'm starting to think maybe I've forgiven that little puff ball. Kirby 64 might not be my favourite Kirby game, but it's pretty solid. Being able to combine enemy abilities is the secret sauce for sure, and when you add in some King Dedede alliance levels, the occasional mine cart level, some solid boss fights, and the fact that you can play this one with the d-pad which negates that stupid controller, you get a damned good platformer. My guest this week is PENDING Hall of Famer, Mark McCue. We've been looking for a project to do together for a while (shoutout to anyone that gets that reference), and we both had a good time with 64 Kirbys. And neither of us is ashamed to admit we had a little trouble at times, too. OK we are ashamed, but we still admit it. And before we eat, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! I think it (along with the rest of the GameCube wrestling games) get overshadowed by the SmackDown series, but if you grew up playing the N64 holy grail titles, you have to play this one.Day of Reckoning's controls feel like the next-step from games like WCW/nWo Revenge and WWF No Mercy. After over 70 hours of sitting at my PC fighting aliens, I can safely say that XCOM 2 isn't just one of the best tactical RPGs I've ever played, but one of the best games I've ever played, period. If you've never played it, XCOM 2 is a tactical RPG, like Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics. You move your soldiers around on a board game-esque grid, and take turns with the computer, who's doing the same with aliens and robots. But in between missions, you're traveling the world gathering resources and using them to upgrade both your troops and your ship. Aliens have taken over the planet, and it's up to you to take it back. It's a little tough to pick up out of the gate, but once you're over the hump, it's addictive as hell.My guest this week is the winner of our Extra-Life charity auction from last December, Robert. He picked this game and now I can see why. We get into the meat of XCOM 2, talk about the superb War of the Chosen DLC, talk about our favourite soldier/ability/equipment combinations, and laugh at the bulshit that is missing a 94% shot with your ass on the line. And before we save the world, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, we HAVE to talk a little Switch 2. How am I feeling about WrestleMania this year? And will OG Switch games be discounted after the Switch 2 drops?Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too!
