Offbeat: Samuel Smithers

We decided last minute to drop an Offbeat from a previous Patreon episode on serial killer Samuel Smithers. Smithers was also nicknamed "The Demon Deacon" because he was an active member of his church.

Smithers lived an unexceptional life but became an arsonist and then a serial killer when he moved from Tennessee to Florida.

Fall River Satanic Cult Murders

Fall River Satanic Cult Murders

By the late 1970s, Fall River, Massachusetts, a once prosperous industrial town turned seedy with decaying buildings and crime. A flourishing sex industry cropped up amidst the drugs and alcohol. Center stage of our story is Carl Drew, a Manson-like cult leader, pimp turned religious figure who recruited sex workers to join his satanic coven. After three women are murdered, the whispers of ritualistic killings began surfacing. The investigation leads down a dark path where perhaps Satan's power is an embellishment for murders that would've happened anyway. Lies, twisted involvements and satanic gatherings play out in this lurid tale of true crime.
