Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs - What If We Were All Rated?

Maslow's Hierarchy Of Needs - What If We Were All Rated?

I’m taking aim at Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Maslow first introduced the concept of a hierarchy of needs in his 1943 paper, titled "A Theory of Human Motivation.” The point was to showcase that people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other, more advanced needs. What I want you to pay attention to and consider is that Maslow showed us what we tend to do. Not what is best. He was just reporting. Yet as a culture we seem to have taken his reporting of what we tend to do as what we should do. When I go to the coffee shop and pass the pastries I tend to want one. If I was a caveman I’d just take one and eat to survive. However, I’m not a caveman. I don’t at all need that pastry and the sugar and gluten would not serve me best, so I pass it by. Most of the time. I’m not a total masochist. But I’ve evolved beyond survival. But as a culture we still look to the basic needs as our priority and even our status symbols. What if our level of self-actualization, self worth and relational was as apparent as our ability to job, money and belongings? Maslow’s pyramid I find more valuable as a relic of something we’ve evolved beyond than a guideline. Got a comment or question about an episode? Want to ask a question about your drive? Email me. 660: How self-aware are you? - Q&A with Alan Stein

660: How self-aware are you? - Q&A with Alan Stein

We are holding up self-awareness as a holy grail of success. I often say the most dangerous enemy of our life is what we don’t know. What we are blind to. And it’s even worse if we’re talking about an area we think or assume we are good at, and are actually not! In show 655 my guest was high performance coach Alan Stein and we spent a majority of our time talking about the value and necessity of self-awareness. The reality that even with high profile NBA pro basketball players, the number one ingredient for their long term success is, self-awareness. So I wanted to put the issue to you. I posted this question on Facebook, “What is something about yourself you were once unaware of, and now are gratefully "self-aware"? How has it benefited you?” Then, I had Alan himself join me to review your comments. I’ll tell you, I feel oftentimes these candid question and answer sessions with you, the Ziglar Show audience, are as profound if not more, than our main interviews where we initially dig into the issue. Special: Choose To Win Release - Transform Your Life, One Simple Choice At A Time

On stage in front of a crowd of people, Tom Ziglar was spontaneously asked what he believed to be the fastest way to success. His knee jerk response, "Replace a bad habit with a good habit." Daily? Weekly? Monthly? Yes. This concept is the seed from which his new book grew from, "Choose To Win". This is the first book to come from the Ziglar legacy years, and in many ways is a first encapsulation of an authoritative look at the legacy of Zig Ziglar passed down to his son and the world. This is a special insert podcast to gift you with the first chapter of the book. Find out more at choosetowinbook.com Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

What you will find out is how critical this root issue is to you very well being and overall success. I’ve heard of EQ for years, but never like this. 658: Tracking your daily activities will increase your results - Q&A

658: Tracking your daily activities will increase your results - Q&A

How does simply tracking your daily activities affect your overall success? It’s massive. As with most positive improvement, actually, all...the point is brain training. Trying to get our brains to make the right decisions, do what we truly want to do...so we’re all looking for ways to manage ourselves. So here with daily tracking, We’re not talking massive goals planning here, we’re dumbing it down to the ridiculously simple, that none of us can deny is easily possible. Anything in your life where you want health and success, if you will just make a daily note of what you did in that area, you will improve. Why? As you’ll hear in the show, it increases your awareness, accountability and motivation. Again, just simply...noting down what you did. Even if it’s...nothing. You’ll see it and it will give you conscious and subconscious fuel to do something, the next day. So I kick this discussion off with a clip from Zig Ziglar on this issue. The clip is not even a minute and a half and me quickly mentions how to increase your sales and weight loss! From the message I posted this question on my Facebook page - “In your goals and pursuits and growth, how are you measuring or tracking your progress and results?” Zig Ziglar’s son, CEO of Ziglar and my dear friend Tom Ziglar joined me to talk through all your comments.  Learn more about your ad choices. 657: Being mentally tough - Habits with Alan Stein

657: Being mentally tough - Habits with Alan Stein

Is being mentally tough a healthy habit for success? This is our Habits show where we walk through the seven spokes in the Ziglar Wheel of life and hear the healthy habit of our guests. This time we’re with Alan Stein, high performance coach known for his work with  pro basketball players and author of “Raise Your Game”. In show 655 we dug into his message and primarily focused on the massive value and necessity of...self-awareness. On that note, reviewing his healthy habits was profound. I was intrigued with his commentary on mental toughness and the reality that all we can control is our attitude and effort, and that goes even for NBA pro athletes. You can get the book and connect with Alan at raiseyourgamebook.com/ or wherever you buy books. Though at his site you can get a free preview right away.  Learn more about your ad choices. 656: Do you really know how to listen? - Q&A with Oscar Trimboli

656: Do you really know how to listen? - Q&A with Oscar Trimboli

Welcome to The Ziglar Show, I’m your host, Kevin Miller. Do you really know how to listen? I asked this question on Facebook,” What have you been taught regarding...listening? Being a good listener? Do you think you are a good listener?” We received about 50 responses, but while a lot of people shared things they had heard in regards to being a good listener,  most also admitted...they weren’t so good. This comes from my recent series on listening, brought to us by Oscar Trimboli, don’t miss his show #651. And for this Q&A session, I asked Oscar to join us! I think I learned more from hearing his responses to your real life questions that I did in my main interview with him. And as you’ll hear, he was listening. To me. Watching me. And you’ll hear first hand how he employs deep listening skills in the moment. I’ve had so many people say they went to his website at oscartrimboli.com and purchased his book. I’d highly recommend it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

655: Alan Stein, high performance secrets from renowned pro basketball performance coach

655: Alan Stein, high performance secrets from renowned pro basketball performance coach

What is your key to success? Well first, there isn’t one, there will be a bunch of keys. The best way to find them? Discover the keys that successful people use in their lives! Which I bet is a main reason you listen to The Ziglar Show. But we can’t listen to any one person’s success keys and adopt them for our lives. We are unique and will need a unique batch of keys to unlock our own potential. SO...the tagline for this show is “Inspiring Your True Performance”. I received a book titled “Raise Your Game - High performance secrets from the best of the best.” I was intrigued initially, then much more when I began reviewing the book. Alan Stein, Jr. is the author and our guest today. Here’s what I think is of such great value though. Alan didn’t just survey successful people, he worked directly alongside them. Long term and intimately. Specifically, NBA superstars. Alan is a world-renowned performance coach who spent most of his career working with pro basketball players. Now he’s a sought after speaker, podcast host and author. But before you get visions of his guidance being how to high jump and dribble, the first chapter of his book, the anchor in my opinion, is based on my current, favorite word: AWARE. Chapter one in his book is Self-Awareness. Do you get that? The testimony is that the first key ingredient they are looking for in a world-dominating basketball player is not height, reach, endurance, physical strength or even mental grit. It’s self-awareness. In my years of working as a professional in the personal development industry, after 362 Ziglar Show episodes and over 100 interviews with highly successful and influential people, I wholly agree. Chapter two of the book? Passion. Like self-awareness, passion is something anyone can have folks, that’s available to all of us! So you can see why I’m excited about this message! You can get the book and connect with Alan at raiseyourgamebook.com/ or wherever you buy books. Though at his site you can get a free preview right away. You’ll see a rave review from bestselling author Daniel Pink, our guest in show #575 Learn more about your ad choices. 654: Choose your own label

654: Choose your own label

Got labels? In this show, we’re going to talk about labels. The ones we want and don’t want. There are labels, positive and negative, we are given. That we often believe. There are many leaders who say “Deny any negative labels, reject them!” However, we sometimes get labels that we know...have some truth to them. And we just accept them. Even...when we change. Then what about the labels we want? Can we not become those? I have a message about this from...Zig Ziglar. He tells what is actually a fairly disheartening story of testimonies of how negative labels dramatically affected people’s live, of course, primarily for the worse. As you know, he doesn’t often spend time communicating anything negative. But to drive home his point, he did in this clip. But as always, he uses it to empower us. From the clip I posted this message to the Ziglar audience: QUESTION: 1. What negative label (from others or yourself) do you strive to reject? 2. What positive label do you strive to be? I asked Michelle Prince to join me to talk through your comments, we got through as many as we could. This is a very tangible and often sore issue in our lives, but getting it out on the table to deal with is really, really significant. We ultimately got far more comments about the positive labels people are striving for, embracing and becoming. Very inspiring discussion. Learn more about your ad choices.
