World Press Freedom Day: New Solutions to Mitigate Growing Risks to Journalists

World Press Freedom Day: New Solutions to Mitigate Growing Risks to Journalists

Much is discussed about the escalating dangers facing journalists and press freedom around the world, and in many ways they have never been greater. But the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA also marked World Press Freedom Day this year by looking for solutions, as well, to help keep them safer. Association Vice President Bob Rowley talks with an expert on global security, Sam Levy, about an exciting new system that could be invaluable for better protecting journalists. Levy is founder and director of Yubix, an Irish-based technology company developing a product called Vertex Pro, which uses cutting edge features, security expertise and real-time data to provide security for individuals working in hazardous environments. The system can alert individuals at risk with early warnings and help them prevent or mitigate those dangers. It also has an emergency module that can assist with real-time data to decide if an individual needs to escape a potentially dangerous or deadly situation – and if so, provide them with information to do that more safely, right down to planning evacuation routes. More must be done to keep journalists safe.
