Journalism and Challenges During Wartime with Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Oleksandra Matviichuk

In this episode of the Foreign Press Podcast, journalist Patricia Vasconcellos, Board Member of the Club of Foreign Press Correspondents in the USA (AFPC-USA) and the White House Correspondent for the Brazilian television network SBT, engages in conversation with Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate (2022). Matviichuk is a human rights lawyer focusing on issues in Ukraine and the OSCE region. She leads the human rights NGO Center for Civil Liberties and coordinates the activities of the initiative group Euromaidan SOS.

The Center for Civil Liberties is dedicated to promoting human rights and democracy in Ukraine and the OSCE region. It works on legislative reforms, conducts public oversight of law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, organizes educational initiatives, and implements international solidarity programs.

After the beginning of new armed aggression in February 2022, Matviichuk together with other partners created the "Tribunal for Putin" initiative in order to document international crimes under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in all regions of Ukraine which became the targets of attacks by the Russian Federation.

Matviichuk has authored numerous alternative reports submitted to various UN bodies, the Council of Europe, the European Union, the OSCE, and the International Criminal Court. She received the Democracy Defender Award for "Outstanding Contribution to Promoting Democracy and Human Rights" from OSCE missions (2016), the Right Livelihood Award (2022), Sakharov Prize from the European Parliament (2022) and the Nobel Peace Prize (2022) awarded to the Center for Civil Liberties, which she leads. The Financial Times named Matviichuk one of the top 25 most influential women in the world. AFPC-USA is solely responsible for the content of this episode.
