Life of the Locum with Dr. Casey Gaunt

Life of the Locum with Dr. Casey Gaunt

Dr. Casey Gaunt grew up in Virginia and started working at a horse ranch when he was a teenager. This created an interest in animals in general, which made him want to go to vet school. He went to Virginia Tech for a bachelor’s degree in Animal and Poultry science before getting into vet school in 2002 at Virginia Tech (Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine).

Casey then got an internship in Saskatoon at the WCVM, where he decided he wanted to specialize in Internal Medicine and met his now husband, Joe.

In 2010, Casey went into private practice in Florida for a year before coming back to the WCVM. He supervised the ICU for two years before moving back into Internal Medicine until January of 2016. At that time, he wanted to find something different in his career and decided to leave the WCVM.

Casey began doing locum work while figuring out what he wanted to do long term, and ended up really enjoying it - so much so that it has been his full-time gig ever since!

If you're considering locum work this episode will be great for you as we cover:

  • Casey's unique career journey from WCVM to becoming a full-time locum specialist
  • Why pursue locum opportunities?
  • Identifying work dissatisfaction and what you can do about it
  • Making the decision to walk away from a job you don't like
  • Crafting your schedule and "pulse work"
  • The pros and cons of locum work and things you need to look out for
  • Setting clear expectations with clinics you work at
  • Casey's Impact Round!
