#455: BONUS - Long Island Serial Killer Captured - And Jim called it!

Breaking news and RCP jumps on a Bonus Ep to weigh in. For over a decade Long Island Police have been trying to solve what appeared to be the serial murders of several young women whose remains were found at Gilgo Beach. Finally just this past week, Architect Rex Heuermann, 59, was arrested at his Manhattan office and arraigned in the deaths of three women: Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello 27.

Police are still investigating the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25, as well as other victims who may also be connected to Heuermann. Back in 2011 Jim was asked to profile this case for a New York Times article, and you won't believe how closely he nailed the description of the actual suspect - Bright, Careful and Sadistic: Profiling Long Island’s Mystery Serial Killer https://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/22/nyregion/long-island-serial-killer-gets-a-personality-profile.html (https://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/22/nyregion/long-island-serial-killer-gets-a-personality-profile.html)

Join us as we get Jim's reaction to this arrest and Laura provides even greater context to this "successful family" man who lived under the radar for so long.

#140: Her Name Was Kathleen Peterson: Discussing The Staircase

The RCP deep dive the case of Kathleen Peterson and discuss the Netflix original documentary "The Staircase." In 2004, filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade debuted "The Staircase" as an eight-part mini-series which examined the case of Michael Peterson, a novelist who was accused of murdering his wife Kathleen after she was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their Durham, North Carolina home.In 2012 a further two hours were shot from Peterson's and the defence teams perspective detailing the aftermath of the trial and turning it into a 13 hour docu-series.Was it an accident or was she murdered? Our expert team weigh in, starting as they always do, with the victimology.#HerNameWasKathleenPetersonThis Episode of Real Crime Profile is brought to you by GobbleGet $50 off of your first box from Gobble by visiting Gobble.com/RealCrimeSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

#139: "False Report" RCP Book Club

Lisa Zambetti is joined by Dean Laffan to discuss the book detailing the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about being raped and the detectives' journey to arrive at the truth in the hunt for a serial rapist who was terrorising women. In 2008 a young woman reports rape in Seattle. She is not believed and was given a citation for false reporting. She was forced to pay $500 fine and plead guilty to lying about being raped. A series of rapes then began in Colorado. The victims ranged from young women to a grandmother. He was a predatory stalker who spent months researching each victim. He would break in, brutally rape the women, take photos on occasions and then carefully clean everything afterwards. He was prolific and predatory and sadly there will no doubt be many more victims who suffered at this hands, than the crimes with which he was charged. There are a lot of lessons to be learned about believing victims when they take the brave decision to report and many more about early identification, intervention and prevention. #137: Getting to the Bottom of Evil Genius

The full RCP team of Laura Richards, Jim Clemente and Lisa Zambetti reunite to interview co-directors Trey Borzillieri and Barbara Schroeder about the genesis of the Netflix show "Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist." We go behind the scenes and ask the documentarians the tough questions that are still burning after the final twist lands at the end of the four part docuseries. We debate the answers that Trey and Barbara give and the evidence to support it including material which did not make it onto our screens. In this episode, burning questions include how Trey and Barbara come into contact with this baffling case, the extent of Brian Wells's involvement, Brian's nonchalant affect, demeanour and behaviour at the bank, who was involved in the so-called scavenger hunts in Eerie and the context and detail of Trey's relationship with Marjorie Diel-Armstrong and Bill Rothstein.#HIsNameWasBrianWells #HisNameWasJimRodenWatch EVIL GENIUS on Netflix.https://www.netflix.com/title/80158319This episode of Real Crime Profile is brought to you by Quip.Visit GetQuip.com/RealCrime and get their first refill for free.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

#134: A Precedential Murder

Laura Richards talks with special guest David Challen, the son of Sally Challen, who is currently in prison serving an 18 year sentence for the murder of Richard Challen in 2011.During her trial jurors were told that she attacked him with a hammer whilst he ate his lunch at the kitchen table of the former marital home.David is leading the charge to free his mother from prison and tells Laura about what it was like growing up at home and what his mother and father's relationship was really like behind closed doors.Since Sally's conviction, the concept of coercive control has been introduced into law following the successful Domestic Violence Law Reform Campaign spearheaded byLaura Richards in partnership with Women's Aid and Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation. Given the advances in law and analysis of coercive control, Sally's murder conviction is now being looked at with fresh eyes and challenged in the courts setting a precedent in UK law.
