Superdry Founder Julian Dunkerton (Net Worth £441m) [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

Julian Dunkerton built Superdry from scratch to be a multi-million business. In this interview with Rob, he talks through his journey from opening his first shop at 19 to setting up a new Gin and Juice bar in Cheltenham. Julian talks through his love of retail, and how focusing on others is the key to success in business. If you want to learn how to find what you love, and building something from a gap in the market this conversation is for you. Key Takeaways I love Cheltenham. The place has been very good to me. We are doubling the size of an old office building. It’s quite unique to have something like what we are building outside of London. There are new types of hotels which is slightly more informal but the quality is still really high. How are hotels different from retail? It’s very similar but it’s a different product. It’s quite an accessible concept, that its so expensive that you can’t go. It’s about space and how you walk into a store. Everywhere you go it was visually exciting in the store. You’ve got to be the best in your environment to be successful. Are you someone who is driven by numbers or the product? It has to be both. I’ve been on a long journey and every year I have increased sales, and profitably. You have to follow the consumer. Particularly with fashion, people tend to get caught in a particular moment and they think they have cracked it but the customer always moves on. It’s very easy to make clothes but can they be the best. How do you stay in touch with what people want? The thing is not to get caught in the clouds and stay grounded. You’re here to serve and the moment you forget that then this industry isn’t for you. If you start thinking in isolation, then you will fail. I’m trying to get back into Superdry at the minute because they have made a strategic error, and have gone in the wrong direction. How do you work out what the consumers want? You have to be well travelled, and observe a lot. Understanding your industry is key, then you know that that style of product is doing really well. It’s a very logical industry in reality. Fashion is not what happens on the catwalk but what’s been worn on the street. You have to know what people are wearing in Tokyo, New York, and Korea. How did you get into retail? I didn’t know what else to do. I left school with three very bad A Levels. I went travelling for five or six months and contemplated what I should do next. I was in Turkey at a market and was very excited by it. I realised I was good at it and understood what the public needed. Taking something that is popular and then take it to a different environment is key you don’t always have to think of new ideas. What would you say to someone who is pushing 40 and you haven’t found something you love yet? It’s hugely whatever your age to find something that you love. It’s not as complicated as one imagines. You have to put yourself 100% into it and think about other people first. If you find something that no-one is doing, and look where the gaps are. It’s all about partnerships, occasionally they don’t work, but what a wonderful growing something together is creative. As long as you have opposite skills it’s a positive thing. It’s about thinking about other people. If you both come at it with a vision of creating something together then you’ll be successful. If you’re trying to make the best clothing possible. I would have a commercial view of the world whereas my business partner can design something from that, from anything really. But our biggest selling product I had nothing to do with. What’s the connection with the Japanese styling? Japan is incredibly cool in terms of streetwear and street culture. What we found was that the packaging and the letter styling was the most exciting thing. This was more defined as an artistic endeavour than any other packaging I’d seen. We did it completely differently. The rest of the industry would follow the norms, buying a year out from release a clothesline, and I wanted to do something different. Whereas I would go to a brand and just buy the product there and then. I changed how the industry worked. But at Superdry, this has been forgotten. Are you a reader of books, other entrepreneurs? Yes and newspapers. I read every single newspaper, maybe four or five when I get time. I would only read the news bit, and the business section, not the sports section. It’s been useful to have a big picture view about what is happening in the world. How did you finance the growth phase? I have been self-funding everything. I never spent the money that I made. I would always reinvest. When I sold businesses I would always reinvest the money. I did float at one point, and it did help the growth of the company and the structure that we needed to grow. That was when we were making 25 million profit and a couple of 100 million in turnover. Do you have any mentors or people who have inspired you? I think Dyson story is incredible, and the Apple story is the ultimate. I admire what he achieved, and he was really thinking about the consumer, and the money was the secondary part of it. It’s a paradox, that it’s not all about the money to make loads of money. Best moment in your career/worst moment in your career? The best was James, my business partner, says that he would come and work for me. I had to take him on a coffee journey, to get him back into the fashion industry. The worst moment was that Superdry was going to take a wrong turn and not being able to change it. Best Advice you’ve been given: Share and experience together. I have equal partnerships, so it’s not overpowering and you're doing something equally together. Is there something in the world that you would like to change? I’m a passionate British tax paying human being. I think how we run the country, I think we can do it differently. I don’t think we look at a problem and how we can affect change. If we look at areas that voted Brexit, they are the deprived areas of the country. We are in a stage where manufacturing could come back to this country because of technology. We could bring back manufacturing in those areas. You could affect that change now, as tax-free investment in those areas. No one is thinking about that. What does the word disruptive mean to you? Looking at a market, finding a gap in that market and doing something about it. Best Moments ‘I love Cheltenham. "I've earned so much, shitloads of money. 100 million? I don't know. I know you want a figure. You're not going to get one." "Put me in a shed in a field, and I'll grow it, the garden, make it an empire again. And that's the kind of person I am, and I am now. I've proved everyone wrong, come out the other end." "I don't trust anyone anymore, which is a shame. It takes a lot for me to get trust from anyone. But how I am sitting here today, I know my worth. I know what I've got to give. And I'm not being a fool anymore." "I definitely am a survivor. I've never asked for sympathy, don't want sympathy and I think what makes you a good person, you go through these situations and you learn from them." "When you earn money, everyone has their little hand in it and it starts off small, then they get greedier and greedier, and that's how they get caught." Carl Hartley | The Truth About Electric Cars & Inside the Luxury Car Industry

Carl Hartley | The Truth About Electric Cars & Inside the Luxury Car Industry

Rob is joined again by supercar dealer Carl Hartley. Carl reveals the luxury car industry's biggest scams, manufacturer manipulation, and insider secrets. From exposing dealership malpractices to sharing his controversial views on electric cars and the Jaguar rebrand disaster, Carl holds nothing back. He also talks about how he sold 14 cars in one day, shares the story behind his viral police meme, and explains why he'll never sell a Lotus! Carl Hartley REVEALS: Why the electric car revolution is "the biggest scam in the car industry," with Carl explaining why the 2030 target is unrealistic and why infrastructure will never support it. Why manufacturers are increasingly trying to cut out grey market dealers by pricing cars higher initially, changing the industry dynamics. How some dealerships abuse sale-or-return arrangements, secretly using client cars and covering up accidents. That car insurance is essentially a cartel, forcing owners into unfair arrangements and penalising them for others' mistakes. How prestigious brands like Ferrari maintain their exclusivity through deliberate customer selection and strict control measures. Why limited editions aren't always what they seem, manufacturers often create artificial scarcity through marketing rather than genuine rarity. BEST MOMENTS "I had three of the most deadly cars in the world - the Carrera GT, the F40, and the P1. This car drives like you've smacked its kids and shagged its wife." "When you look pro rata, cars have gone up a disgusting amount in what, one new model. Range Rover is the best example in the world. They've literally gone up 70 percent from one model to another." "Look at all the racing drivers that have had motorsport success in Jaguars and the great cars. Steve McQueen used to own Jaguars. The coolest person to ever walk the earth. And now look what they've done." "Money's hard enough to earn and sometimes it's not fun. So when you want to spend it, you want to have fun spending it." "I get more sceptical of someone who walks in with their Dolce Gabbana suit on and their shiny shoes than someone who just walks in dressed casual."   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team Episode Sponsor - AG1 Claim your exclusive offer of AG1 at the link below drinkag1.com/disruptors ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Life After Being Cancelled with Matt Le Tissier | How Matt Le Tissier Rebuilt His Career After Sky Sports

Matt Le Tissier, former Sky Sports pundit and Southampton FC icon, opens up about his departure from mainstream media, his journey to Christianity, and shares his unfiltered views on everything from government control to the crisis in society the UK and the world is facing.   Matt Tissier REVEALS: Why he was fired from Sky Sports His thoughts on Keir Starmer The true extent of media control How he has managed to generate and create an income after his ‘cancellation’ Why he found Christianity The problems with football right now Why Financial Fair Play rules actually prevent teams from challenging the status quo and protect established wealthy clubs. Why psychopaths tend to rise to positions of power BEST MOMENTS "I think football should be free from any of those kind of campaigns. Keep it out of sport. If you want to campaign for that stuff, do it on your own time, but don't infiltrate sports to be able to do it." "I've always felt like there is a backlash coming and there I always feel like there are so many more good people on this planet than there are bad and eventually that will win over." "When you're taxed when you buy, taxed when you sell, taxed when you're alive and taxed when you're dead - our government is basically discouraging people from actually growing our country." "I would say there are probably people who like to have control over human beings, psychopaths, I think if they destroy the country enough, there'll be people begging for help from their government." "The stuff about free speech is that you are free to offend people. Now, you can't give offence to people. You can't offend somebody. Somebody can only take offence."  "One of the greatest things we can have while we're on this planet is the human connection and making connections with different people from different walks of life and enjoying other people's company." "Between taxes and currency debasement, more than 50 per cent of everything you ever own will be taken from you from the government... It's 50 per cent relentlessly throughout your whole life.” "Libertarianism has become the belief system of the internet. But it hasn't actually taken hold in the real world yet because the way political systems are, it can't take hold." "The problem with government and so much of the way modern businesses run is all spreadsheet based... but actually you need this sort of accidental stuff and you have that in free markets and capitalism because it's just built in." Okay, and you got to keep on going back. You have to figure out take your ego out of it." "If you want to be successful in business, there's no balance. With brutal honesty, Pena reveals why he believes humanity is heading for disaster, shares insights about dealing with the ultra wealthy, and explains why 99% of people will never make it.  Dan Pena REVEALS: How he has helped create $2.3 trillion in equity through his mentees Trump's election will be good for the worldwide economy Why most people are destined to fail Why he sleeps 10 hours a day   Proof of societal decline in the UK The primary cause of Western society's deterioration and downfall Why free advice is ineffective   Why he keeps 75% of his assets outside the UK   BEST MOMENTS "If you're worried about paying taxes, you're not making enough fucking money." "Money is freedom.” "I train people to be in the point zero, zero, zero, one percent." "Most people don't work as hard. They're lazy. They're entitled.” "I'm not here to be liked, I'm here to be effective." "You're the average of the five people you hung around with." "I haven't had to work in 40 years. I do it because I like what I'm doing." "Nobody wants taxes, but nobody wants to give up any services." "A hundred million dollar deal took you about six weeks to get done in the 70s... Take the survey now: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1iHRZvOly_Q7aprlQBF7n38y0EjgvnHw2OdYII8yQElc/edit?ts=670d0111 Rob is joined by advertising maverick Rory Sutherland for a conversation that will make you question everything you thought you knew about property, work, and modern living. Through brilliant analogies, Rory unveils why we're all pouring our wealth into "utterly tedious" houses instead of enjoying life's innovations. From his radical takes on office culture to his fascinating insights on how video calls have changed business forever, this episode is packed with "aha" moments that will stick with you long after listening. Whether you're a property owner, thinking about remote work, or just love fresh perspectives on modern life, this conversation will have you looking at the world differently. Rory Sutherland REVEALS: Who is really to blame for the property crisis How the internet has democratised consumption Why office culture needs reimagining in all ways The reality that all companies need to adapt to or risk losing top talent How the UK housing market could be transformed and innovated Why big cities are less relevant than ever BEST MOMENTS "The point of capitalism, right? Capitalism is nothing to do with efficiency. Forget that. That's a distraction. Praising capitalism because it's efficient is like praising Bob Dylan because he's got a beautiful singing voice." "Any meeting without tea and biscuits is just faintly unnatural... we've got to leave some space for anthropology here, not just economics." "The actual buildings are utterly tedious and awful for the most part. And all the money is actually in the land... It's kind of bothersome to me because so much of what should be a productive discretionary market economy is actually being sequestered in this utterly uninteresting form of wealth preservation." "Nobody minded buying CDs when the only way you could listen to music was on a CD... When the record companies started to say, 'No, I know you can download music from the internet in five minutes, but you still have to buy it on CD to protect our legal rights.' Okay, that's when people revolt." "We've spent trillions on this stuff, we've created billionaires, we've created bankruptcies... He shares his thoughts on business and entrepreneurship, including his unconventional perspectives on university education and the effectiveness of paper marketing. Richard also reveals his 8 secrets to creating a billion pound business and offers his views on how mirroring successful business models can lead to personal success. Richard Harpin REVEALS: How he built six businesses by age 20 How he grew HomeServe from £50,000 life savings to 8.5 million members Why he advocates a "copy and pivot" strategy in business The three essential entrepreneurial traits: courage (making bold decisions), persistence (determination), and integrity (confronting brutal facts) Why he believes the UK needs fewer university graduates and more apprenticeships Why direct mail marketing is more effective now than 10 years ago BEST MOMENTS "Direct mail shots get a greater share of the doormat today than they did 10 years ago when digital marketing was still in its infancy." "I don't believe in all these entrepreneurs that sell up and move, I was happy to pay my tax and say, this is a great country." "Fail fast.
