James Reed: How to Master Hiring Staff with CEO & Chairman of Reed Recruitment [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

Rob is joined by James Reed, Chairman of Reed, Britain’s biggest recruitment brand and worth over a billion pounds today. James describes how he started out in business, how Reed started and how it grew into the business and brand that it is today. If you’re looking to gain insights and advice from one of the most influential entrepreneurs and business owners, don’t miss out on this in-depth interview today. Tune in to discover how to start, grow and scale your business, how to strategically plan your business decisions, why mastering negotiation is essentials to success and why having the right mindset will help you succeed in business with the chairman of the world’s largest family-owned recruitment company, James Reed. Key Takeaways. Take us through your journey? I suppose I am curious about learning and I am interested in entrepreneurship. My first job was in a cemetery to earn money before I went to college, it was hard work, it was in winter and I had to level graves. It was pretty educational because it made me realise I didn’t want to do hard physical work, all my life. I then started working for Anita Roddick, she is the founder of The Body Shop with her husband Gordon, and I was really impressed by her ethos and sense of purpose because it was all about fair trade and not testing on animals, she had a really strong message and brand and I wanted to learn from her. Do you think writing letters to people is more successful than email? Yes, I do, when you email someone you are piling up their inbox but when you write to somebody it is very rare and it stands out more. It is a good way of preempting a job application and that’s what I did with Anita Roddick, I saw that she was having some problems, I wrote to her directly and I became caudate of one rather than a candidate of 100. Any way we can differentiate ourselves, and come across as somebody with personality and character is much stronger. How old were you when you attended Harvard? I was 25, it was really tough. You started your study group at 7:20 in the morning and you worked really hard, and you learned a lot. I then came back and got a job at the BBC in production, I loved that I was a trainee producer for a little bit. You have both higher education and experience working in your family business, which one taught you the most? What is interesting is when I went to Harvard, my Dad actually applied and came over too. He did a course for entrepreneurs. I was the first member of our family to go to university, and even though my father left school at 16 with not any O levels, he was really big on education and he learned at night school to be an accountant. The difference is when you study at a university you consider a lot of ideas and see a lot of other people’s experiences, but you’re not actually doing it yourself. It is all very well having a theory but tries and it in practice, and I have learned that since. Try and take people with you, create a moon purpose, build energy around whatever you’re doing, that is really human and that is what I learned from my father. You have been very partly responsible for the growth of your family business, can you tell us how you grew Reed? I think it is always important to be growing, our strategy is very simple. It is to grow organically, we haven’t grown it by acquisition. There are only two ways you can grow organically, one is through exceptional service and the other is through innovation and new ideas. If you can deliver a good service to people that they appreciate, they will come back and they will also recommend you to other people, we take that very seriously. Innovation is also a big part of our DNA. We are always looking for new ideas and we are always skint people for their ideas. What justifies recruitment agency fees? You can negotiate your price, but I always say, if a recruitment agent is charging your company a very low fee, where are they going to send their best candidates? There is a huge behind the scenes cost of running a recruitment agency. We spend 20 million pounds on advertising, millions on IT, we have over 3500 staff. So there’s a lot of time and investment put into that. All the best and biggest recruiters in the UK use our website. If you’re paying a big fee you should expect a really good service and a really strong shortlist and ultimately a really good hire. If you have a good recruiter alongside you who know what you’re looking for, that’s a really important relationship. How do you probe to get the mindset of somebody and look beyond the CV? Characters are everything in the end. You have to embark on a conversation where you can find out as much as you can. The thing that people most care about is integrity, but if you ask a bunch of school kids “what are you looking for you when you go for a job interview?” They never come up with that. There’s a really mean question in my interview book which is “where does your boss think you are right now?” So unless you have taken the time off, if your boss thinks you are with a client or working from home, that’s an issue. What is the best advice you have ever received? Be nice to people and to try and have an idea every day. What is the worst advice you have ever received? To not do things that I have ignored and always turned out quite well. Or when people have told me “Be more careful” or “It won’t succeed” often they’re right but the comfort of a pessimist is being proven correct, but there is nothing better than proving them wrong. What does the word disruptive mean to you? I am not sure it is positive! It has become more ambivalent to me if disruption is good or bad? I think we have entrepreneurs have a duty to think about that, and maybe come up with some new ideas to address that. I love change, I love the challenge of improvement. BEST MOMENTS: “Getting the right people into your organisation is game-changing” “Some ideas have succeeded, and some have failed, but the combination of the two has led us to where we are today” “The difference between hiring someone who is fantastic and hiring one who is a disaster can make or break a business” ABOUT THE GUEST: James Reed is the Chairman of REED – Britain’s biggest and best-known recruitment brand and the largest family-owned recruitment company in the world. Like I'm talking millions through banks not allowing customers to trade in gold, like millions. It is frightening." "People's wealth is everything to them, right? If you get to 65 and you lose everything, you don't have the life to go back out there and do it all again." "I truly believe that we're going to see the biggest transfer of wealth I think ever in human history over the next 10, 20 years." "They physically tell them, we will not allow this transaction. Why? Because it's gold.” "Look at Trump, he's openly come out and said, we are going to make this a crypto safe country we want to jump on the bandwagon." Author of multiple books including The Parasitic Mind, Dr. Gad Saad draws from his groundbreaking research and lived experience and explains how certain ideas can parasitise our minds and shape our behaviour. His blend of scientific knowledge and honesty challenges us all to examine our thought patterns and societal assumptions while offering practical strategies for maintaining clear thinking in an increasingly complex world. Gad Saad REVEALS: His concept of "suicidal empathy" Why our natural capacity for compassion can become pathologically self-destructive The revolutionary framework of "parasitic ideas," demonstrating how certain thought patterns can hijack our cognitive systems The role of high expectations in achievement, using his own family's approach to education to illustrate how cultural values shape success patterns across generations His analysis of institutional resilience explains why certain academic disciplines maintain stronger connections to reality Why the tendency to internalise success and externalise failure influences both personal development and societal prejudices. How to distinguish authentic conviction from surface-level virtue signalling BEST MOMENTS  "The biggest threat to freedom of speech short of you living in North Korea or under ISIS, is not the institutional obstacles to freedom of speech, but the self inflicted restrictions." "I never modulate a millimetre of what my heart and mind tells me to say, for better or worse, because based on my own code of personal conduct, if I modulate that, then I feel that I'm being fraudulent." "Don't pursue happiness wilfully, rather pursue life with honesty, dignity, and authenticity and the downstream effects as you'll wake up and you say ‘life is good’." "Be a honey badger. A lot of car companies were like, 'right, by 2030 we're going to be fully electric, we won't have one petrol car on the road anymore.' That was never going to happen." This episode offers a rare glimpse into the life of one of Britain's most misunderstood celebrities, showing both her resilience and vulnerability. Katie Price REVEALS: The reasons behind her suicide attempt The truth about her money Why she lost a quarter of a million pounds Why she gets free surgery How many boob jobs she has had Her thoughts on sex and relationships Why she’s spent millions on lawyers over the years Not one of her children's fathers provides financial support. What’s next for Katie Price BEST MOMENTS "I've been through it all, and I've come out the other end, and I will never let any man, person, anything ever get me in that state." "I've earned so much, shitloads of money. 100 million? I don't know. I know you want a figure. You're not going to get one." "Put me in a shed in a field, and I'll grow it, the garden, make it an empire again. And that's the kind of person I am, and I am now. I've proved everyone wrong, come out the other end." "I don't trust anyone anymore, which is a shame. It takes a lot for me to get trust from anyone. But how I am sitting here today, I know my worth. I know what I've got to give. And I'm not being a fool anymore." "I definitely am a survivor. I've never asked for sympathy, don't want sympathy and I think what makes you a good person, you go through these situations and you learn from them." "When you earn money, everyone has their little hand in it and it starts off small, then they get greedier and greedier, and that's how they get caught." "I'm misunderstood because the media have created a caricature of me when really, I'm the most down to earth, empathetic, caring person, very giving, very loving."   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team Episode Sponsor - AG1 Claim your exclusive offer of AG1 at the link below drinkag1.com/disruptors ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Carl Hartley | The Truth About Electric Cars & Inside the Luxury Car Industry

Carl Hartley | The Truth About Electric Cars & Inside the Luxury Car Industry

Rob is joined again by supercar dealer Carl Hartley. Carl reveals the luxury car industry's biggest scams, manufacturer manipulation, and insider secrets. From exposing dealership malpractices to sharing his controversial views on electric cars and the Jaguar rebrand disaster, Carl holds nothing back. He also talks about how he sold 14 cars in one day, shares the story behind his viral police meme, and explains why he'll never sell a Lotus! Carl Hartley REVEALS: Why the electric car revolution is "the biggest scam in the car industry," with Carl explaining why the 2030 target is unrealistic and why infrastructure will never support it. Why manufacturers are increasingly trying to cut out grey market dealers by pricing cars higher initially, changing the industry dynamics. How some dealerships abuse sale-or-return arrangements, secretly using client cars and covering up accidents. That car insurance is essentially a cartel, forcing owners into unfair arrangements and penalising them for others' mistakes. How prestigious brands like Ferrari maintain their exclusivity through deliberate customer selection and strict control measures. Why limited editions aren't always what they seem, manufacturers often create artificial scarcity through marketing rather than genuine rarity. BEST MOMENTS "I had three of the most deadly cars in the world - the Carrera GT, the F40, and the P1. This car drives like you've smacked its kids and shagged its wife." "When you look pro rata, cars have gone up a disgusting amount in what, one new model. Range Rover is the best example in the world. They've literally gone up 70 percent from one model to another." "Look at all the racing drivers that have had motorsport success in Jaguars and the great cars. Steve McQueen used to own Jaguars. The coolest person to ever walk the earth. And now look what they've done." "Money's hard enough to earn and sometimes it's not fun. So when you want to spend it, you want to have fun spending it." "I get more sceptical of someone who walks in with their Dolce Gabbana suit on and their shiny shoes than someone who just walks in dressed casual."   VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks  rob.team Episode Sponsor - AG1 Claim your exclusive offer of AG1 at the link below drinkag1.com/disruptors ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Life After Being Cancelled with Matt Le Tissier | How Matt Le Tissier Rebuilt His Career After Sky Sports

Rob interviews football legend Matt Le Tissier for a conversation about modern Britain, media censorship, and his controversial perspectives on current events. Matt Le Tissier, former Sky Sports pundit and Southampton FC icon, opens up about his departure from mainstream media, his journey to Christianity, and shares his unfiltered views on everything from government control to the crisis in society the UK and the world is facing.   Matt Tissier REVEALS: Why he was fired from Sky Sports His thoughts on Keir Starmer The true extent of media control How he has managed to generate and create an income after his ‘cancellation’ Why he found Christianity The problems with football right now Why Financial Fair Play rules actually prevent teams from challenging the status quo and protect established wealthy clubs. Why psychopaths tend to rise to positions of power BEST MOMENTS "I think football should be free from any of those kind of campaigns. Keep it out of sport. If you want to campaign for that stuff, do it on your own time, but don't infiltrate sports to be able to do it." "I've always felt like there is a backlash coming and there I always feel like there are so many more good people on this planet than there are bad and eventually that will win over." "When you're taxed when you buy, taxed when you sell, taxed when you're alive and taxed when you're dead - our government is basically discouraging people from actually growing our country." "I would say there are probably people who like to have control over human beings, psychopaths, I think if they destroy the country enough, there'll be people begging for help from their government." "The stuff about free speech is that you are free to offend people. Now, you can't give offence to people. You can't offend somebody. Somebody can only take offence."  "One of the greatest things we can have while we're on this planet is the human connection and making connections with different people from different walks of life and enjoying other people's company." "Between taxes and currency debasement, more than 50 per cent of everything you ever own will be taken from you from the government... It's 50 per cent relentlessly throughout your whole life.” "Libertarianism has become the belief system of the internet. But it hasn't actually taken hold in the real world yet because the way political systems are, it can't take hold." Okay, and you got to keep on going back. You have to figure out take your ego out of it." "If you want to be successful in business, there's no balance. I mean, you really have to give up some of your home, you know, benefits in order to get ahead." "Listen, if you want to be a disruptor.
