What New Dinosaur Aquilops Reveals About Dinosaur Migration

Aquilops was tiny, but this new dinosaur species has a big story to tell about how dinosaurs moved between Asia and North America.

Aquilops lived in what is now Montana about 106 million years ago and was the oldest horned dinosaur found in North America at the time of its discovery. The fossil was unusual: researchers found only a skull, yet its distinctive beak and other skull features were enough to name a new species. The episode explores how scientists identified Aquilops, what its small size tells us about this early ceratopsian, and why its relationship to Asian horned dinosaurs provides evidence for dinosaur migrations between the continents.

We also look at the limits of the discovery. Because only the skull was found, scientists had to reconstruct much of Aquilops from its relatives, and its age and status as a distinct species raise questions about how paleontologists identify dinosaurs from incomplete fossils. Along the way, we discuss new methods for estimating dinosaur weight, including 3D modeling of Sophie the Stegosaurus, plus dinosaur news involving virtual reality and Jurassic World.
