23: What on Earth is a Rainbow Gathering and Why You Need to Go

Life under the Rainbow:Running wild in the woods with the naked hippiesRedefining you inhibitions and desires to create an entirely new view of the world and have lots of fun at the same time.Natural fun. no drugs, no alcohol, no technologyWe invite Felix Chandler back to the mic to talk about our experiences at Rainbow gatherings and what people need to know about them. Considering it is possibly one of the most enjoyable, interesting and insightful events I've ever been to it's amazing that most people have never heard of them, so definitely something worth sharing with you the listeners! We try and cover all the things someone who has never been asks and should know before arriving and the effect they had on us including all the challenges it threw at us and our favourite experiences and take homes. As well as rainbow gatherings we also discuss polyamory, the benefits of having and not having and generally put the world to rights on social media and travel. GatheringsMore details about upcoming Rainbow gatherings across the world can be found online here:http://somewhereundertherainbow.org/find-a-gathering/https://www.welcomehome.org/There are usually one or two active facebook groups per gathering and far too many to list here. Some of them can be difficult to join without an invite but you can usually message on one of the forums to be invited or try contacting me direct for an insiders invite into the family =]LESSONSAppreciate thingsThe story of the rich successful guy who wants to go back to being a poor man on the street was really interesting. He had never tasted something so good as a this skinny cat because he was so hungry for it and so appreciative. If you can culture better appreciation of everything around you this is the key to being happier in your lifeRainbow is a great launchpad for travelWhen you want to visit a new country and really learn about it and meet people and have real experiences. It is very hard these days as a tourist going to a new city and trying to actually engage with real life. Going to a Rainbow gathering in the country is a perfect way to meet actual locals and understand what life was like in their history and current times. And you get an awful lot of inspiration and tips for cool things to do in that country and a lot of invites to go and visit people and do fun stuff together. If you see an event happening in a country you’ve wanted to visit it is literally the best place to start hands down. Smile moreI can’t say how nice it was being in a group of people who always smiled at you as you walk along. Every day I walked lightly on my feet thanks to all the smiles. It’s something I’ve really enjoyed practising out and about since. HAlf the people I smile at look away before they get the chance to respond, but genuinely a lot of people look surprised and sile back and have a connection. and some people I even get a high five for no real reason but it’s awesome. So just go about your day assuming everyone will be nicer if you smile at them and thus you can actually make it so.BOOKSGet any of the books free on audible (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Audible-Free-Trial-Digital-Membership/dp/B00OPA2XFG?tag=samharris48%E2%80%9321)Sex at Dawn by Christopher Ryan (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sex-Dawn-Stray-Modern-Relationships/dp/0061707813/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2VPRE1F17HCJR&keywords=sex+at+dawn&qid=1580470304&s=books&sprefix=sex+a%2Cstripbooks%2C347&sr=1-1)Since Darwin's day, we've been told that sexual monogamy comes naturally to our species. Mainstream science--as well as religious and cultural institutions--has maintained that men and women evolved in families in which a man's possessions and protection were exchanged for a woman's fertility and fidelity. But this narrative is collapsing. Fewer and fewer couples are getting married, and divorce rates keep climbing as adultery and flagging libido drag down even seemingly solid marriages. In the tradition of the best historical and scientific writing, Sex at Dawn unapologetically upends unwarranted assumptions and unfounded conclusions while offering a revolutionary understanding of why we live and love as we do.Somewhere Under the Rainbow by Tom Thumb (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Somewhere-Under-Rainbow-personal-Gatherings/dp/1482611708/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=somewhere+under+the+rainbow&qid=1580470380&s=books&sr=1-1)This is a well-reviewed book about his experiences at Rainbow gatherings. Many of us have probably experienced this at some point. We can start by figuring out where it comes from and re-framing the way we feel about failure.Set small goals that can help develop your confidence. Learn how to explore and evaluate all possible outcomes rationally and develop contingency plans; and practice thinking positively. By moving forward slowly but steadily, you'll begin to overcome your fear.Don't fear failure. Stay positive, have a backup plan, and learn from whatever happens. It's one way to get to the answer you're looking for and be able to move forward. Start nowWe all have dreams we wouldd like to achieve. Most of these dreams never become more than just a thought. The reason? We don't start or move towards it. Most people tend to delay starting anything, whether it is a business, hobby, diet, relationship, etc. Everyone seems to be afraid of change or the unknown.Planning to start something? Take small steps or come up with small goals and work on it. You'll notice that not only do you get to accomplisg a goal, but it takes you one step closer to your dreamIf you want more in life, you have to go out there and take it.SyncifyAn app that lets you be social at a distance. 113: Trauma and Mental Health - Karen Stefano, Author - What a Body Remembers

Karen StefanoA defence lawyer and an author. Her recent book, What a Body Remembers: A Memoir of Sexual Assault and Its Aftermath, looks back at the events where she was assaulted in college, went on to become a criminal defense attorney, and 30 years later was hit with anxiety and PTSD.Our guest was assaulted near her home in Berkeley, CA, after a late-night walk home from a shift as a Berkeley police department aide. Her assailant was charged with assault with a deadly weapon but was ultimately acquitted of the crime.Karen got no justice from her case. The assault and the traumatizing experience of not being believed in the courtroom as a woman in need of help, had her understanding why such predicament has happened to her.Karen shows how there are many ways to heal from trauma, that the path is not always straightforward, but usually more of a two steps forward, four steps back process. What a Body Remembers is a powerful book about hope and the capacity to heal.Karen Stefano and What a Body Remembersstefanokaren.com (http://stefanokaren.com/)What a Body Remembers: A Memoir of Sexual Assault and Its Aftermath (https://www.amazon.co.uk/What-Body-Remembers-Assault-Aftermath/dp/B07SG12JZ4/ref=sr_1_1?crid=X21I61LHY8XI&dchild=1&keywords=what+a+body+remembers&qid=1591036779&s=books&sprefix=what+a+body+remem%2Caudible%2C324&sr=1-1)Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/karen.stefano.5)Twitter (www.twitter.com/kstefano1)ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. It takes time and patience. Give yourself room to breathe. It doesn’t mean that it will immediately change things, but it will definitely give you a clearer perspective on everything that is going on around you.Begin the process of letting your painful emotions come and go. Slow down and tune in to our experience so we can find the silver lining. Remember, healing is a process that happens step by step, day by day, so please don’t rush yourself.Practice positive self-talkSelf-talk is the dialogue you have with yourself, and that's pretty common. Often, self-talk is referred to as giving ourselves instructions while we carry out a task, random observations about our environment or a situation.Self-talk can be both negative and positive. Much of your self-talk depends on your personality. If you’re an optimist, your self-talk is more hopeful and positive. If you're a pessimist, your self-talk could be "toxic" and depressing. Our self-talk can have an influence on the way we see ourselves, and the world around us. Learn to shift that inner dialogue. It can help you be a more positive person, and it may improve your health - mind, body and spirit. It's ok to seek helpMany people who hesitate to seek help struggle in silence. Some people hide their condition so well that loved ones or the people around them may be unaware they are going through something. There is no shame in seeking help. The most important thing you can do is reach out to someone. You may be surprised at how many people can share their own stories of struggles. But what's more important is that they will also be able to share how they overcame it.We are not alone. We are love and we are loved.SyncifyAn app that lets you be social at a distance. We learn through every day life and experiences that are not “school-like” in any way, and things do not need to “academically” educational to be worthy of our time and effort. We can all be creative in the ways we learn different things, whether we are young or old!Get your kids excited about discovering something new by disguising the learning activities as fun time. There are many other ways to learn, though, and as parents we can understand our children and see what styles they enjoy and respond to best. The most important thing is that we are encouraging our children to explore the world around them.Foster kindness and empathyIt is critical to start and teach kids at a young age, when they can most easily absorb fundamental lessons. Usually, children like to learn from the people around him. They mimic the behavior of others and implement that in their own behavior. They are born imitators. So, we should present an imitable character before them which will help them grow as a good human being.Children are the future habitants of this world. If they are kind and empathetic, the world will be in safe hands.Teach kids the importance of diversityPromote self-discovery by sharing personal journeys and helping kids understand that everyone has a story. Teach children that their lives are enriched when they encounter and befriend people from different racial, ethnic or socioeconomic backgrounds, or who face different learning or physical challenges. Remind kids that everyone is an individual and when kids are self-aware and self-accepting, they are less likely to be judgmental or prejudiced. Ross Jackson-HicksRoss Jackson-Hicks has battled anxiety since being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as a child.Ross, who runs Rudi's hair salon, came up with an idea where men would be able to talk in a safe space. There is a toxic masculinity stigma where men are supposed to be viewed as macho men - and as a result Man Down was formed. Man down is a support group for men based in cornwall with mental health concerns. A very relaxed, very informal and non judgmental space where men can come along and not feel vulnerable taking about how they have been feeling recently.ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. It can be so easy for us to take our mental health for granted and seem like a big of a task to do so, but in reality it’s not.Mental health awareness is great, but action is essential. Raising awareness of mental health problems should be the start of the process of tackling them, not the end. Viktor FranklLove yourself enough to know what helps you grow and to love yourself means to accept yourself as you are at the same time you come to terms with those aspects of yourself that you cannot change.Prevent self-sabotage by setting loving boundaries. As your self-love expands, so will your ability to identify what is and isn’t good for you. You’ll gain the clarity you need to understand what you will and will not accept in your life.Self-love is about connecting to your innermost needs, celebrating the freedom of being you, and honoring who you truly are while dropping your destructive patterns.Be mentally toughIncreased mental toughness is the key to performing at your peak. Being mentally tough helps you manage your thoughts, regulate your emotions, and behave productively.Mental toughness gives you power to work hard and always move forward because you know how to deal with difficult situations and overcome them. We all possess mental strength, just to different degrees. If we train ourselves to be more mentally tough we will be able to reach our goals and become successful.Exercise empathyPeople who are empathic are active listeners. If you want to see into the hearts of others, your first task is to hear their stories. Empathy is important because it helps us understand how others are feeling so we can respond appropriately to the situation.See things from their perspective, and imagine yourself in their place. Essentially, empathy is putting yourself in someone else's position and feeling what they must be feeling as it compels us to take action to relieve another person's suffering.Subscribe! If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. Richard HallKokoon are the world’s first sleep sensing EEG (electroencephalogram) headphones - comfortable enough to sleep in, without compromising acoustic quality.Richard Hall and Tim Atnos launched Kokoon Technology in 2015 with the aim of combating the common challenge of getting a good night’s sleep by using a soporific mix of audio and brain-sensing technology. The idea for Kokoon headphones stemmed from a personal problem: founder Tim Antos had a stressful job which led to him having trouble sleeping. He tried conventional methods, and even sleeping tablets, but nothing worked, until he went to a cognitive behaviour programme at a sleep clinic where he discovered the power of using audio to sleep. Whilst this provided a solution it also raised another problem; it was uncomfortable to sleep wearing large headphones.Tim decided to combine the reserch from the sleep clinic with the technology of an accessible consumer device: Kokoon.Richard and Kokoon:Kokoon (https://kokoon.io/)SleepKokoon Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/sleepkokoon/?hl=en)SleepKokoon Twitter (https://twitter.com/SleepKokoon)ABOUT THE HOSTMy name is Sam Harris. Family time means you can just have fun and enjoy each others company! You can never get back time, no matter what. Make the most of the time you can give to your family. Understand that nothing can be more important than your family because they are the people who will be with you always, through thick or thin.Treat Yourself WellEmbracing the concept of self care can be difficult for those who’ve always placed emphasis on the welfare of others. However, giving all your energy to those around you without filling your own back up leaves you depleted and empty. For sure that’s no way to live.Treating yourself means you then have more energy to love those around you. You'll feel happier when you’ve invested some energy in YOU.In addition to pampering yourself, more substantial forms of self-care invloves having healthy lifestyle choices are important, too. Consuming a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and being sure you get enough sleep are all important.Subscribe! If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. You will have to push yourself and fight tendencies to fall back into old patterns. Instead of accepting your inaction, always try to find the cause for it, and learn ways to overcome it. You need to keep moving forward in order to achieve your dreams and stay true to your visions. After all, by taking no action all we do is make sure that we don’t succeed. Be Open-MindedOpen-mindedness is a characteristic that involves being receptive to a wide variety of ideas, arguments, and information. It is a necessary ability in order to think critically and rationally. Even if being open-minded does not come naturally to you, there are things that you can do to cultivate a receptive attitude that leaves you open to new perspectives, knowledge, people, and experiences. When you have a positive attitude about new experiences, you can open yourself up to new discoveries every day. It’s a great way to keep your life fun and exciting!Don't Let Anyone Stop YouNo matter what, someone is always going to come around and try to dim that light or shut it off. Whatever you do, you hold on to that light and you fight. You fight to not let that person tear you down, you fight for the right to define yourself, to not let anyone else tell you who you are. You got to keep your head up. Don’t ever let someone fade the light that makes you beautiful. Because in the end, you’re the one who controls how brightly you shine.Subscribe! If you enjoyed the podcast please subscribe and rate it. And of course, share with your friends!
