First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Topic: Everything You Need to Know About Plant Based Diets, with Dr. Bill Misner

Bill Misner, a Ph.D. nutritionist, alternative medicine practitioner, author of Finding Fitness For Life, and top Master’s runner, including National Trail race course record holder in the age 70-up category, has been on a plant-based diet for the past 20 months, and says that it allows for accommodation of higher training work loads and more strength/speed workouts due to elevated recovery rate. During our discussion, I ask Bill many questions, including:

Have you always eat a plant based diet, and if not, what led you to "make the switch"?

What does a typical day of eating look like for you?

What changes have you observed?

Do you think that part of "feeling good" on a plant based diet is just an acute response to making better food choices, and if so, once that response wears off, is it possible for there to be neural or muscular nutrition deficits down the road?

What about common plant-based diet foods like legumes and grains - are you concerned about binding agents or phytic acids?

There is some argument that neural problems like Alzheimer's are related to inadequate fat intake. If so, does that place someone on a plant based diet at increased risk?

If you look at components like essential fatty acids, essential amnion acids, vitamin D, vitaminK2, CoQ10, preformed vitamin A, iron, vitamin B12, mineral ratios, hormones or A1C, do you see risks from eating a plant based diet.

So do you take nutritional supplements?

I also mention a refutation of the book "The China Study", which I link to here (Weston Price Foundation).

Listener Q&A: ====================================== [contact-form 3 "AskBen"] ======================================

Jeff has a call-in question about whether a "Kosher dairy certified" whey protein is beneficial.

Helene asks: I just read this article you wrote and that is why I am writing you. I am an ultra trailrunner. I am also a Certified Natural Hygienist, which means I know everything about food combining. From my knowledge, I don't have information on how to apply it while doing endurance sport. I didn't found yet readings on the subject. I only found conventional readings on endurance nutrition where everything is mixed together. Even sources that are vegetarian or vegan also mixed up everything...Which means that in competition, I never used gel, energy bar or sport drink. All I ingest is water and fresh fruits. I still get very good results, I never have a cramp. But after 4 hours into it, I can steel feel a lack of energy. Do you have any interesting source of information on the subject?

Kara asks: What's your take on the use of Humanofort to improve training recovery and performance?

Igor asks: After hearing about the amino acids benefits from your podcast I'm thinking to start supplementing by them. You have been recommending the MAP product which I find a bit expensive for me. Do you have any suggestions for what to look while shopping for cheaper aminos? Will it make me more harm than good using the cheap aminos?

Craig asks: I participated in a 70 mile charity ride yesterday and had to SAG in with severe cramping in my vastus medialis and slight cramping in my upper/inner quad area. I couldn't turn the pedals in anything but my lowest gear without bringing the cramps back in full force. I took in a 28 oz bottle of water plus 200 calories of Hammer Perpetuem and 4-6 Hammer Endurolytes each hour. I was taking on so much fluid I had to relieve myself at every rest stop. About 3 weeks ago I started a conditioning program at the Y 3 times a week. It consists of machines and cardio, including leg extensions, presses and curls. I'm doing low weight/high reps as my goal is to reduce fat. What steps do I take to overcome the problem?

Dan asks: What are your thoughts on marijuana use and aerobic training? I don't use it all the time but enjoy it during long runs. I find that it gets me in the groove or mind set to maintain a steady pace. I've never used it racing.

Chris asks: In a recent half ironman I tried to eat my normal race morning breakfast of pancakes and really struggled to get anything down due to "race stomach" nerves. This has been a little bit of an issue at all races this year with it being a bigger issue at the races I want to do best at. However at this recent half it really impacted me as I puked up everything I got down race morning once I got the race venue, it seemed this really disrupted my stomach as I struggled through the whole bike portion to get food down and absorbed into my system, I threw up a couple times on bike and run and then about mile 8 on the run it seemed my stomach finally came around and I successfully put down 3 GUs in the last 5 miles of the run. Unfortunately my lack of caloric intake before and throughout most of the race left me feeling quite flat and unable to perform to my potential. I did this race the previous year and my time this year was about 15 minutes slower but I feel my fitness is better this year and it has shown in other races. So, I feel like pre-race nerves kind of got the better of me in this half and really impeded my performance, so my question is kind of 2-fold, do you have any advice for coping with pre-race nerves, and do you have any good ideas of pre-race meals that are easy to handle if I'm having some trouble getting food down race morning?

Insider Beauty Secrets For Men, Can You Eat Your Skin Care Products, How To Smear 1st 6 Hour Milking Grass-Fed Colostrum On Your Face & Much More With Andy Hnilo Of Alitura.

Insider Beauty Secrets For Men, Can You Eat Your Skin Care Products, How To Smear 1st 6 Hour Milking Grass-Fed Colostrum On Your Face & Much More With Andy Hnilo Of Alitura.

Several years ago, Andy Hnilo of the skin care and beauty company Alitura first joined me in the podcast "Deer Placenta Smoothies, Smearing Colostrum On Your Face, How To Use A Clay Mask & Much More." But Andy's been up to quite a bit since we last connected, including some very cool new formulations, an epic fragrance that I wrote about here, new face scrubs, and plenty more. Andy Hnilo is a former athlete, model, and actor that had his life turned upside down. On March 20th, 2011, he was struck by a series of large vehicles while crossing a busy street, a trauma that caused seven broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and an extreme compound fracture. Determined to come back even stronger, Andy was able to be back on the runway in less than 3 months. He was able to heal his skin by immersing himself in a diligent skincare routine that included a mineral-rich blend of four clays, organic superfoods, and nutrient-dense ingredients: a process that healed his body. Andy is now the founder and CEO of Alitura, which makes life-changing skin care products with organic superfoods. In this episode, you'll discover: -How a horrific, disfiguring accident was the precursor to the Alitura products... -The importance of a 6-hour colostrum from a grass-fed cow... -Clay face mask the first Alitura product... -Ben's Wacky Wednesday routine... -The proper, manly way to use a scrub... -About the Alitura face Pearl cleanser... -A serum containing a copper peptide... -Differentiating between the night cream and the serum... -The most versatile beard oil on the market... -The fragrance Ben swears by... -Ben's response to men who resist the concept of beautifying themselves... -What's to come from Alitura in the next year or so... -And much more... The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively With Todd Kashdan

The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively With Todd Kashdan

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/insubordination When I first received the book The Art of Insubordination: How to Dissent and Defy Effectively by my guest on today's show, Todd Kashdan, I thought it was going to be some fringe rebel handbook or something like TheAlchemist's Cookbook, or a title that was meant to incite riots and violence. I was dead wrong. Instead, this book is a research-based toolbox for anyone who wants to create a world with more justice, creativity, and courage. For ideas to evolve and for societies to progress, we desperately need rebels to challenge conventional wisdom and improve on it. Unfortunately, most of us fear nonconformists, perceiving them as disloyal, reckless, destructive, or just plain weird. Because most would-be rebels lack the strength and skills to overcome hostile audiences, principled insubordination remains an underleveraged asset in the workplace and public square. Based on cutting-edge research, The Art of Insubordination is the essential guidebook for anyone seeking to be heard, make a change, and rebel against an unhealthy, stagnant status quo. The book also gives the rest of us the evidence-based strategies we need to become better allies of our leaders in change, ensuring that the best ideas, products, and solutions survive and win the day. Inside this book lie answers to several questions, including: • What are the most effective ways to express unpopular, important ideas? • How can we help principled rebels be heard and influential? • How can we better manage the discomfort when trying to rebel or interacting with a rebel? Filled with fresh and engaging stories about dissenters in the trenches as well as science that will make you see the world in a different way, The Art of Insubordination is for anyone who wants to see more justice, creativity, inclusion, cultural dynamism, and innovation in the world. As a Professor of Psychology and a leading educator to the public, Todd Kashdan translates state-of-the-art science for practical application to improve our everyday lives. He is well-known for his energetic and disarming communication style. Todd received the 2010 Distinguished Faculty Member of the Year Award at George Mason University for his teaching and mentoring. He gave a TEDx talk on psychological flexibility and writes the “Curious?” blog for Psychology Today, which is enjoyed by more than four million readers. After receiving a Ph.D. in clinical psychology (2004), Todd founded the Well-Being Lab at George Mason University which has produced over 210 peer-reviewed journal articles on well-being and resilience, psychological flexibility, meaning and purpose in life, curiosity, and managing social anxiety. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How to define "insubordination"... -The difference between principled and destructive insubordination... -Five principles of persuasion when you're in the minority or demographically disadvantaged... -How a minority that affects change can avoid the mistakes of the preceding majority... -The three steps to raising principally insubordinate kids... -How to teach kids to view themselves as heroes in waiting... -And much more! Sacred Hunting, Convict Conditioning, Rites Of Passage, Plant Medicines, Rekindling Ancient Spiritual Practices & More With Mansal Denton.

Sacred Hunting, Convict Conditioning, Rites Of Passage, Plant Medicines, Rekindling Ancient Spiritual Practices & More With Mansal Denton.

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/sacredhuntingpodcast My guest on this podcast, Mansal Denton, also known as "Little Beaver", is the founder of Sacred Hunting, host of the Mansal Denton Podcast, and the subject of an upcoming documentary BELOW THE DROP, which explores our relationship to life and death through hunting.  Feeling insecure in early life, he chased a woman to Europe, which led him to prison. Struggling with shame and confusion of what it meant to be a man, he found his calling with the sacred art of hunting. He now desires to share this practice with more men. His indigenous name comes from a Crow Sun Dance chief. His spiritual lineage is derived from six years of mentorship from a Muskogee/Creek medicine man named Will "Star Heart". What is Sacred Hunting? A practice that leads us back to our origins. A reminder that, for our ancestors, obtaining the food that sustains life was a spiritual act involving bloodshed. A reconnection to nature and the earth that gave us birth. An opportunity for connection and tribal brotherhood. A transformative encounter with death. Mansal Denton, like the men he leads on wilderness quests, was raised in a culture alienated from its sources of nourishment and sustenance. A youthful indiscretion that led to a prison cell fundamentally altered his life’s trajectory. Here, he shows the power and vitality that the hunt can bring into men’s lives in this perilous time, when rites of passage are notably absent. Sacred Hunting brings the richness of his hunting experience, and that of the men whose journeys he facilitates, into inspirational focus. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How a stint in the clink became a rite of passage for Mansal... -Ben's preferred style of hunting and why... -When the hunt took on its sacred form for Mansal... -An insider's look at the sacred hunting experience... -Why it's especially empowering that sacred hunts occur with men only... -How plant medicines can enhance the hunt... -What occurs after the animal is killed... -And much more... BenGreenfieldFitness.com/benpatrick Ben Patrick (“Knees Over Toes Guy”), is the coach and founder of the “Athletic Truth Group,” (ATG) a gym and online training service based out of Clearwater Beach, Florida. Ben overcame debilitating knee and shin pain, as well as subsequent surgeries through a personal journey taking knee and foot strength training means to their fullest potential. How To Build Your Legacy, Bond Your Family With Traditions, Rituals & Routines, Rites Of Passage & Much More With Rich Christiansen of Legado Family Founder.

How To Build Your Legacy, Bond Your Family With Traditions, Rituals & Routines, Rites Of Passage & Much More With Rich Christiansen of Legado Family Founder.

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/legadopodcast When it comes to passing on important family values and beliefs to future generations, I firmly believe that family traditions are the powerful legacy-building tool in a parent’s toolbox. Traditions, habits, rituals and routines are the glue that stick, the threads that bind and the clasps that hold a family together through the best and worst of times. As our family discussed in the recent podcast “The Official Greenfield Family Q&A Podcast: Parenting, Cooking, Traditions, Legacy-Building, Family Game Nights & More!,” we recently worked with the wonderful Rich Christiansen of Legado Family Founder, who specializes in helping families identify their core values, then create memorabilia, traditions, rituals, routines, comings and goings all based around those values. As a result, our family not only now has a “Greenfield Family Playbook” which is a guide that we can pass on to future generations in which all our values and traditions are listed, but we also have a family mission statement, a family crest being designed to hang above our fireplace, a family logo we can print on hats, shirts, mugs, and stickers, and even individual spirit animals and colors for each member of our family. If you're not already weaving traditions, rituals, routines and an emphasis on legacy into your own family, I encourage you to do so, with or without the help of a professional. It's been a transformative process that will impact the Greenfield family for generations. For more on the Greenfield family's comings and goings, you can also check out GoGreenfields.com here! To explore this topic even more, I decided to interview Rich for my podcast. Rich helps families upgrade their relationships through a program consisting of five different modules that include detailed lessons and structures crafted carefully to enhance lasting ties and strengthen bonds. His Legado product revolutionizes the way families reconnect through sharing proven models, real-world experiences, valuable insight, and giving your family engaging activities for all age groups. Build Family Legacies provides the ultimate roadmap to building the best family legacy your family could ever imagine and no other brand can do it better. Rich and his wife Gaye are the parents of five sons and a daughter they sponsor from Nepal. Together, they also share eight beautiful grandchildren. As a family, they enjoy exploring the outdoors together and always have their eyes set on big adventures. During our discussion, you'll discover: -How the Legato business has evolved to its current form... -"Dark investments" and how wealth can decimate a family... -How to begin identifying family values... -The basic model of the Legado platform... -Rites of passage and assisting children to "come of age" when they're ready... -How to foster an entrepreneurial and self-sufficient spirit in children... -An apology blended with a charter... -Key traditions Rich recommends... -And much more... Could This Molecule Be The Next Darling Of The Anti-Aging Industry? A Fascinating Geranylgeraniol (GG) Discussion With Dr. Barrie Tan.

Could This Molecule Be The Next Darling Of The Anti-Aging Industry? A Fascinating Geranylgeraniol (GG) Discussion With Dr. Barrie Tan.

BenGreenfieldFitness.com/gg About two years ago, I had a fascinating podcast discussion with Dr. Barrie Tan, titled "Why Your Vitamin E Supplement Could Be Harming You (& The “One Plant Wonder” Alternative That Could Be The Single Most Powerful Molecule If You’re Stranded On A Desert Island)". During that discussion, Barrie briefly alluded to a special molecule he was deep in the throes of researching, a molecule that he was convinced could be one of the greatest new compounds that humankind has ever discovered for full-body health. Your body makes this thing on it's own, but your levels drop significantly with age, and thus there are remarkable longevity benefits as well as benefits for muscle protein synthesis, testosterone and hormone regulation, CoQ10 synthesis, and overall structural support for the body, along with reduction in the risk of age-related physical decline. The name of this molecule is geranylgeraniol, also known as "GG", and could very well be the next supplement Barrie would take to a desert island. After interviewing him, I'm certainly convinced it has great promise and I now plan to start taking it to assess results for myself. Dr. Barrie Tan is a research scientist with a Ph.D. in Chemistry and Biochemistry. For the last 35 years, Barrie has immersed himself in the world of Vitamin E (particularly from annatto) and is considered one of the world’s foremost experts credited with discovering a molecule called “tocotrienol” from three major natural sources. That was the topic of our last podcast, which is very much worth a listen, as the molecules we discuss in that show pair with GG like, well, turkey and cranberries. During our discussion, you'll discover: -The one supplement you should have if stuck on a desert island (Intro w/ Jonathan Lizotte)... -Why we need to care about this if our bodies make their own GG... -Specific Functions of GG... -How the endocrine system relates to GG... -Bone Health, Vitamin K and GG... -Forthcoming clinical studies of GG on humans... -Supplements you can stack with GG... -Edible and non-edible plants which contain GG... -Dr. Tan's personal diet and exercise habits... -And much more!
