The Road to Sparta: How Dean Karnazes Relived The Ancient Battle & Epic Run That Inspired The World's Greatest Footrace

https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/roadtosparta

In 490 BCE, some masochistic Greek guy named Pheidippides ran for 36 hours straight from Athens to Sparta to seek help in defending Athens from a Persian invasion in the Battle of Marathon. In doing so, he saved the development of Western civilization and inspired the birth of the marathon as we know it. Even now, some 2,500 years later, that run stands enduringly as one of greatest physical accomplishments in the history of mankind.

Dean Karnazes, my guest on today's podcast, came up with the crazy idea of honoring Pheidippides (and Dean's own Greek heritage) by recreating this entire ancient journey in modern times. During his run, Karnazes even abstained from contemporary endurance nutrition like sports drinks and energy gels and only ate what was available in 490 BCE, such as figs, olives, cured meats and even some stuff called "mastic gum".

Then he wrote about the whole experience is his new book "The Road to Sparta: Reliving the Ancient Battle and Epic Run That Inspired the World's Greatest Footrace". The new book is intriguing, comical, sometimes tear-jerking, and certainly thought-provoking and entertaining, and Dean is probably even more intriguing. Get a load of this guy... TIME magazine named Dean one of the “Top 100 Most Influential People in the World.” Men’s Fitness hailed him as one of the fittest men on the planet. Stan Lee called him, “Super Human.” He's an acclaimed endurance athlete and NY Times bestselling author, who has pushed his body and mind to inconceivable limits. Among his many accomplishments, he has run 350 continuous miles, foregoing sleep for three nights. He’s run across the Sahara Desert in 120-degree temperatures, and he’s run a marathon to the South Pole in negative 40 degrees. On ten different occasions he’s run a 200-mile relay race solo, racing alongside teams of twelve. He has swum the San Francisco Bay, scaled mountains, bike raced for 24-hours straight, and surfed the gigantic waves off the coast of Hawaii & California. His long list of competitive achievements include winning the world’s toughest footrace, the Badwater Ultramarathon, running 135 miles nonstop across Death Valley during the middle of summer. He has raced and competed on all seven continents of the planet, twice over. In 2006 he accomplished the seemingly impossible by running 50 marathons, in all 50 US states, in 50 consecutive days, finishing with the NYC Marathon, which he ran in three hours flat! In 2011 Dean ran 3,000-miles from the coast of California to New York City, averaging 40 to 50-miles per day (one day covering more than 70!). Along the way he stopped at schools to speak to students about the importance of exercise and healthy eating. When passing through Washington DC, he was invited to run through the White House to meet with First Lady Michelle Obama and be honored for his tireless commitment to helping this country get back in shape. Dean and his incredible adventures have been featured on The Today Show, 60 Minutes, The Late Show with David Letterman, CBS News, CNN, ESPN, The Howard Stern Show, NPR’s Morning Edition, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, the BBC, and many others. He has appeared on the cover of Runner’s World, Outside, and Wired magazine’s, and has been featured in TIME, Newsweek, People, GQ, The New York Times, USA TODAY, The Washington Post, Men’s Journal, Forbes, The Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, and the London Telegraph, to mention a few. Dean is the winner of an ESPN ESPY and a 3-time recipient of Competitor magazines Endurance Athlete of the Year award. Dean has also raised millions of dollars for charity and was awarded the prestigious Community Leadership Award by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports.

During our discussion, you'll discover:

-Why it is a myth that Pheidippides ran 26.2 miles...[14:50]

-How humans can actually outrun horses...[19:30]

-Whether Dean ran barefoot or in leather sandals in the same way that Pheidippides did...[22:30]

-The hardest part of Dean's entire run...[30:45]

-How it went for Dean to eat for this race different than he ate for your other races, and why he chewed on something called "mastic gum"...[38:55]

-How Dean ran for 70+ miles with no food...[41:15]

-Why Dean adds rosemary to his coffee and consumes large amounts of wild salmon...[46:15]

-How Dean recovers so darn fast between his events, and why he bulked up before his 50 marathons in 50 days...[51:00]

-Why Dean splits his day into multiple 12-14 minute body weight workouts, and what his exact routine is...[53:00]

-How Dean manages with such little sleep when running marathons over multiple days...[57:50]

-Dean's take on all the talk about chronic cardio being bad for testosterone levels, increased risk of mortality, etc...[63:05]

Ben Greenfield's Favorite Workouts, Building a Generational Legacy, Biohacking On a Budget, & Much More: Part 2 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

Ben Greenfield's Favorite Workouts, Building a Generational Legacy, Biohacking On a Budget, & Much More: Part 2 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

BenGreenfieldLife.com/hospodcast2 Today's episode is Part 2 of my talk at the Health Optimisation Summit, recently held in London by noted UK biohacker and media personality Tim Gray. The Health Optimisation Summit brings together the best from all the key diets, and everything in the health, wellbeing, medical, nutrition, biohacking, and fitness worlds, with the view not to push one mindset, but to incorporate them all with the sole goal of making people healthier–using whichever mindset or 'diet' is best for the individual. When I interviewed Tim Gray recently, on the podcast episode "How UK’s Leading Biohacker Eats, Drinks, & Optimizes His Life: An Interview With Tim Gray," I got a sneak peek into what his life looks like, from his fitness and nutrition routines to his sexiest biohacks. At this year's Summit, Tim turned the tables and actually asked me to present on "A Day in the Life of Ben Greenfield." At first, I thought I'd be struggling to fill the time slot with just my "average day," but then as I thought about all the hacks, routines, and rituals I do throughout my days that are now more or less automatic for me but likely something you'll be quite interested in, I realized it might not be quite as simple as it sounds! In this episode, we pick up where we left off last time, and go on to talk about the importance of family time at the end of the day, finishing the day with purpose, and we even had time left at the end to answer a few questions from members of the audience. Remember, if you haven't yet, I highly recommend you listen to Part 1 of this series, either before or after this episode! In this episode, you'll discover: -How Ben makes the most of the mid-day siesta... -Ben's favorite workouts throughout the day... -Building a family legacy... -Eating practices at the end of the day... -Bedtime rituals... -And much more! The Nitty-Gritty Details Of Ben Greenfield's Daily Routine, How To Optimize Your Workspace, The Latest Biohacking Secrets, Superfood Smoothies & Much More: Part 1 of Ben's Talk at the Health Optimisation Summit.

BenGreenfieldLife.com/hospodcast1 Here, for your itching ears and supremely curious heart and mind, comes Part 1 of my talk at the Health Optimisation Summit, recently held in London by my friend and podcast guest, Tim Gray. The Health Optimisation Summit is Europe’s largest health conference, showcasing the best speakers from the health, biohacking, fitness, longevity, nutrition, functional, and preventative medicine spaces (including yours truly) in order to provide people with the knowledge, tools, and resources to take their own health and performance to the next level. The UK's leading biohacker, Tim Gray is known for his detailed tracking of more than 35+ biomarkers per day, is frequently in the mainstream media regarding practical, trackable, and immediately apply-able health hacks, and is featured on over 30 podcasts a year. As a psychology specialist and a successful businessman, Tim founded and invested in multiple 6-figure businesses, including digital marketing agencies and London’s first private Hyperbaric Oxygen Clinic. After years spent self-healing his body from chronic health conditions through biohacking alone, Tim Gray embarked on a mission to educate and empower the masses. Recently, I spoke to Tim about his history, his routines, the Health Optimisation Summit, and plenty more, in a special two-part podcast episode that included an interview and then a follow-up solosode by Tim ("How UK’s Leading Biohacker Eats, Drinks, & Optimizes His Life: An Interview With Tim Gray"). For this year's Summit, Tim actually asked me to present on "A Day in the Life of Ben Greenfield." At first, I thought I'd be struggling to fill the time slot with just my "average day," but then as I thought about all the hacks, routines, and rituals I do throughout my days that are now more or less automatic for me but likely something you'll be quite interested in, I realized it might not be quite as simple as it sounds! In fact, like I needed to do with Tim's podcast, I had to split my talk up and finish presenting about a "typical" day in Part 2, which is the next episode you'll see released on the podcast feed. You can also go here to get all of the resources from my talk at the Summit. Enjoy! In this episode, you'll discover: -Look at the body as a battery... -Ben's morning routine... -Family time in the morning and the morning smoothie... -How Ben optimizes his workspace... -Midday routines and rituals... -Audience question: "What does your wife do?"... How to Love People & Use Things, Whether Or Not You're A "Hoarder," Minimalist Diets & Workouts & 7 Essential Relationships with Joshua Millburn.

How to Love People & Use Things, Whether Or Not You're A "Hoarder," Minimalist Diets & Workouts & 7 Essential Relationships with Joshua Millburn.

https://bengreenfieldlife.com/minimalist I've been interviewed a few times on the outstanding Minimalists podcast with Joshua Millburn and his partner in crime Ryan Nicodemus, who together founded The Minimalists. This time it was I who put one of them on the hot seat for my podcast, and was able to speak with Joshua about his journey into the minimalism mindset, how we sometimes go about it the wrong way, the four stages of hoarding, and much more. At first glance, people might think the point of minimalism is only to get rid of material possessions: Eliminating. Jettisoning. Extracting. Detaching. Decluttering. Paring down. Letting go. But that’s a mistake. True, removing the excess is an important part of the recipe—but it’s just one ingredient. If we’re concerned solely with the stuff, we’re missing the larger point. Minimalists don’t focus on having less, less, less. We focus on making room for more: more time, more peace, more creativity, more experiences, more contribution, more contentment, more freedom. Clearing the clutter frees up the space. Minimalism is the thing that gets us past the things so we can make room for life’s important things—which aren’t thingsat all. In this interview with Joshua Millburn, you'll discover: -Publishing forays in the realm of minimalism... -The four stages of hoarding, and which stage you're likely at... -The "lightbulb" moment when Joshua embraced minimalism... -Starting points into the realm of Minimalism... -Ben and Josh discuss a minimalist diet... -Minimalist exercise and workouts... -Why being busy doesn't make you important, it just makes you busy... -The seven essential relationships in our lives to balance before focusing on relationships with other people... -How social minimalism promotes a life of productivity and creation... -And much more...
