Special 2-Part Anti-Aging Podcast - Basic & Ancestral Tactics To Enhance Longevity (No Fancy Biohacks Required).

When it comes to living a long life, demographers, epidemiologists, gerontologists and other researchers on aging have long puzzled over the theoretical question of the maximum potential for human lifespan, along with the host of proposed practices we can implement that help us achieve that potential.

There is, after all, in the past decade alone a veritable laundry list of tactics we can use to make ourselves more age resistant, from nutrients, vitamins and pills such as Vitamin D, aspirin, metformin, magnesium, pterostilbene, resveratrol, blueberry extract, nicotinamide ribosideand rhodiola to lifestyle practices such as shivering our asses off, self-imposed starvation, fecal transplants, strict veganism, injecting into ourselves growth hormone, testosterone, stem cells, exosomes, the blood of younger healthy humans and speaking of younger humans, simply “having more children”.

Fact is, compared to the Biblical Methuselah, who purportedly lived to the ripe old age of 969, we don’t seem to be moving the anti-aging dial much. In fact, researchers estimate that in the U.S. today, the average adult life expectancy is still only about 77 years and, disturbingly, now plummeting due to high rates of chronic diseases (many of which are preventable with simple lifestyle changes you’ll learn about in this podcast). Currently – despite the Chinese lore of the recently perished “256-year-old” Li Ching Yuen, the longest-lived modern person in the world on actual record is Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997 at the exact age of 122 years and 164 days.

Yet, when we observe nature, some amount of immortality, or at least a significant amount of enhanced life extension, appears to be achievable. Take the naked mole rate, for example. The naked mole rat’s cells themselves seem to make proteins – the molecular machines that make bodies work – more accurately than us humans, preventing it from developing age-related illnesses like Alzheimer’s. Unlike humans, the way these ugly little creatures handle glucose doesn’t seem to change with age either, reducing their susceptibility to diseases like diabetes.

The naked mole rat isn’t the only animal scientists are now probing to pick the lock of long life. With a rampant metabolism and a heart rate of 1,000 beats a minute, the common hummingbird should, on paper, be riddled with rogue free radicals (the oxygen-based chemicals that make mammals old by gradually destroying DNA, proteins and fat molecules), but the tiny birds seem relatively bulletproofed against heart disease.

Then there are lobsters, which seem to have evolved a protein which repairs the telomere tips of their DNA, allowing for a decreased rate of telomere shortening that most animals are incapable of. Finally, as if rats, hummingbirds and lobsters weren’t enough to make us longevity seeking humans a bit jealous, we mustn’t forget one animal on Earth that may hold the master key to immortality: the Turritopsis dohrnii, also known as the “Immortal Jellyfish”.

Most jellyfish, when they reach the end of life, die and melt into the sea, but not the Turritopsis dohrnii. Instead, it sinks to the bottom of the ocean floor, where its body folds in on itself – assuming the jellyfish equivalent of the fetal position – and regenerates back into a baby jellyfish in a rare biological process called transdifferentiation, in which its old cells somehow transform into young cells.

So is there a human equivalent of the type of immortality “powers” these animals seem to have tapped into? Many in popular anti-aging and longevity circles have suggested that – in the next several decades – we could indeed unlock the secrets to living to approximately 120 to 140 years old, and many biohackers and anti-aging enthusiasts such as Peter Diamandis, Peter Thiel, Larry Page, Elon Musk and Tony Robbins and even lil ol’ me are striving to live greater than 160 years old.

The purpose of this podcast is not to delve into the relatively advanced longevity secrets of these fringe biohackers, but instead to reveal everything you need to know about why the world’s more traditionally living longevity all-stars not only live longer but also tend to live better. They have strong connections with their family and friends. They’re active. They wake up in the morning knowing that they have a purpose, and the world, in turn, reacts to them in a way that propels them along.

An overwhelming majority of them still enjoy life. They share these common behavioral and lifestyle characteristics, such as family coherence, avoidance of smoking, plant-based diet, moderate and daily physical activity, social engagement, and situations where people of all ages are socially active and integrated into the community, despite all of them being from different areas of the world and of different races, nationalities and religions.

That’s not to say that biohacking for longevity and better living through science isn’t beneficial. After spending nearly two decades deeply immersed in the health, fitness, nutrition and longevity industry, I’ve come to a growing realization that an open embrace of both the modern science and the ancestral wisdom could indeed allow one to live a long and healthy lifespan that rivals and even exceeds that of our ancestors. Perhaps that’s why my children and I engage in wild plant foraging (a longevity tactic you’ll learn more about in this podcast), but do so using a plant identification smartphone app that allows us to identify everything from mushrooms to plants with incredible accuracy, allowing us to tap into a bit of better living through science to not get poisoned or make fatal mistakes our ancestors might have while foraging; why I own a quaint and simple, off-grid, barn-style home in the forest where we grow most of our own food, yet fill that barn with tens of thousands of dollars of modern anti-aging biohacking equipment; and why the last time I disappeared into a seven day high-country elk bowhunt in the mountains of Colorado, I had a neurofeedback brain training device neatly tucked away into my camouflage backpack.

But in this podcast, rather than learning about fancy devices you can spend tens of thousands of dollars or fringe biohacks that will get you plenty of weird looks from your neighbor, you will discover exactly how to use proven ancestral tactics to live a happy, long and fulfilled life. So you can think of today's podcast as a cookbook for longevity that gives you all the low-hanging fruit and teaches you all the basics of living a long and happy life.

During this two-part episode, in part one you'll discover...

Can you explain this? Anne asks: In your Low Carbohydrate Guide for Triathletes book you recommend a low carb lunch, but I assume on days I do weight training just before lunch (2x per week) should I add some healthy starches for lunch? Dino asks: I just wanted to ask about CLA for cutting weight in prep for a half/full marathon. JT asks: can i take greens super food powder stuff, instead of eating veggies? I hate vegetables, and need to get my greens somewhere, this sounded like a good option. In my response to JT I mention: LivingFuel SuperGreens, CapraGreens, and Enerprime. Matthew asks: What's the best method to determine a realistic healthy weight? In my response to Matthew, I reference this ideal body weight calculator. Melanie asks: A friend of mine has started taking some products put out by a company called Zija International. They have some capsules and teas and "energy" powders. These products supposedly promote weight loss and energy. The primary ingredient in most of their products is moringa. I did a bit of research on moringa and supposedly it is a miracle cure for everything. I did not come across any alarming side effects. My friend says she feels more energy with this stuff. Have you heard of this company's products and any knowledge about the "miracles" of moringa in general? Todd asks: I hate running, that's why I swim and box. However, I've recently started playing deck hockey that involves a lot of running. I'm getting more muscle and joint soreness after a hockey game than another activity, and it lasts a full day afterward. Do you recommend any foods, supplements, or stretches to help speed muscle recovery so I'm not so sore the next day? I'm trying not to admit I just turned 48 and am still playing hockey like I'm 16, I just don't recover as quickly. In my response to Todd, I mention Recoverease,  Extreme Endurance (use 20% discount code Greenfield), Capraflex, topical magnesium, compression, ice, and electrostimulation. Valorie asks: I'm a non-competitive runner and have been experiencing nagging piriformis pain and sciatica, which radiates down to the back of my knee, for the past 6 months. I went through a few sessions of PT ultrasound which didn't seem to affect it much, and have been foam rolling and stretching twice a day, and following runs, sitting on ice. The pain affects my running gait at the forward and rear extension of my leg and while sitting in the car, or in my office chair. I struggled to complete a marathon last weekend and am now ready to take some time off to resolve it. Will taking a few weeks off from running, along with the stretching and rolling be my cure, or is there a regimen you can suggest to rid me of this pain in the a** once and for all? Matthew asks: As a graduate student, my lab hour are extremely variable and often involve me waking in the middle of the night for a few hours of work.  When these days happen, I find myself waking with incredible hunger, more so than a normal morning craving.  Do you have any suggestions for curbing this hunger, either the before I go to bed, or when I wake up? In my response to Matthew, I mentioned Master Amino Pattern whole amino acids. Also Tekoi has a call in story about the Marathon Dominator and Ioan calls in about the Triathlon Dominator. Upcoming interviews with David Minkoff, Tom Naughton, the bite scientists and more. -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community! First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) ----------------------------------------------------- Featured Topic: Skinny People Just Don't Get It Dr. Colella, renowned weight loss specialist and one of the only surgeons in the U.S. to do Robotic weight loss surgery, has written a new book titled “Skinny People Just Don’t Get it.” Dr. Joseph James Colella MD practices Gastric Bypass Gastrojejunostomy, Weight Loss Surgery and Bariatric Surgery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Colella attended medical school at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and graduated in 1986 having 25 years’ experience. He also received specialized training at Ohio State University on Laparoscopy, Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Joseph Colella is also a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery and is a certified surgeon for Lap-Band Systems. In this interview, I speak with Dr. Colella about his thoughts on the Obesity epidemic in the U.S., how Americans can get fit, why Skinny people are becoming extinct and what his proposed solutions are. Dr. Colella explains why we are always so hungry,  the “inflammatory” scale, strategies to achieve and maintain weight loss goals and how the “carbohydrate cycle” is the final arbiter affecting our perception of hunger, driving our appetite out-of-control. --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Prior to asking your question, PLEASE be considerate and do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. 90% of the questions we receive have already been asked and answered here at BenGreenfieldFitness.com! ====================================== [contact-form-7 id="6222" title="Ask Ben"]====================================== Craig has a call-in question about how to time topical magnesium and pair with compression shorts. Jeff has a call-in question about absorbing gels through the mouth. Tony asks: I have a question about poop. My poop used to always sink. I followed a diet pretty close to vegetarian. Plenty of Salmon and very rarely I would have red meat. I have changed my diet and follow the Low Carbohydrate Guide For Triathletes (your book) pretty closely now. I have added more Omega 3 fats and animal fats in to my diet. And I must tell you, I love to drink micro brews. Ales, stouts, and porters. Usually after runs and/or workouts, with food. On Sundays I may drink up to 8 beers throughout the day. My poop used to curl and sink to the bottom. Some still do but occasionally there are floaters and my poop is now mostly a cardboard brown color. Floaters are more often than before I switched to eating more fat and less carbs. Is this a problem? In my response to Tony, I mention this GI Panel for finding out what is going on with your digestive tract. I also mention the book "What Is Your Poo Telling You". Andrew asks: If muscle fatigue is likely cause of most cramps then answer is to train to alleviate this. How do you go about that for IM training? Is it, for example, going out for 6 hour bike rides at race pace followed by long run? Or put differently - how best to accomplish this type of training for long distance races? Marc asks: I lost about 85 pounds in the course of two years or so, all through diet and exercise. Almost two years ago I decided to get an abdominoplasty to remove a great deal of loose skin from my stomach. The results were great, and I now feel very confident in the appearance of my upper body and even have the faint outlines of a six pack. But my lower body is a different story. I still have a good deal of loose skin on my butt and thighs, and the accompanying stubborn fat deposits that seem to stick to this loose skin no matter what I do. Also, I have always been more of a pear shape, and thick thighs and "cankles" run in my family. I know I can't spot train those areas, but my question is, should I avoid lower body weight training to avoid filling out my legs even more? In my response to Marc, I mention this episode of Get-Fit Guy on how to get rid of loose skin after weight loss. Kyoko asks: I take one rest day every week. Though you introduce the good information of food, do you have any special meal selection during the rest day? Jan asks: Can you discuss when to use chia seeds before an event - instead of breakfast, with breakfast, during event. I am a little confused about how to get the maximal benefit out of it. Kyle asks: My passion is ultra running, yet I also would like to be able to walk when I am 50 years old and hopefully still be running. Including supplements, types of training, etc, what are your best tips for keeping joints healthy and strong to ensure that we continue doing this endurance sport of ours into the future. In my response to Kyle, I mention Capraflex, cross-training, strengthening the core, hips and glutes, avoiding inflammatory foods (particularly with Holistic Fueling for Ironman Triathletes and Low Carbohydrate Guide For Triathletes), and including rest and recovery phases. Chuck has a call-in question about whether racing is good preparation for a race, vs. doing more training. In my response to David, I mention the Marathon Dominator training program that I helped design, and also a Power Breathing device. Tina asks: I've been told by my doctor that I have some bad hip inflammation, and have been asked to stop doing high impact exercises for a month! Prior to this diagnosis, I've had a dull ache  in my left hip and sometimes when i walk I hear a clicking ,  and a dull pain will sometime shoot up to my neck. I've been told by physio this is just muscle sliding over muscle, ...I've also been told it had to do with my core being unstable, tight lower back, etc. ....I've had xrays done, and its not bone related. ...could it be muscle sliding over muscle? Would stretching help? Ice? Heat? I want to get back to my exercising and don't feel I will get a very good workout doing low impact cardio...any suggestions or ideas? In my response to Tina, I recommend my Bulletproof Knee program for IT Band issues. Sue asks: Truth behind "natural" female bodybuilders? I'd like to make the transition from triathlete to natural bodybuilder - I understand you did the opposite.  What's the real scoop on female contest diets? Can they really get ripped while consuming 1300-1500 calories/day like they claim they do?  Also, most seem to have undergone breast enhancement.  What else are they not telling us? In my response to Sue, I mention this chart on "What Female Figure Competitors Eat To Get Lean". Mandy asks: I have had this scar tissue in my calf for at least 15 years, is it too late to for it to be broken down by massage? John asks: What, if any, is the benefit to consuming wheat germ? Cassie asks: I am 23 years old living in Utah and I really want to become an elite in the Olympic distance. I know to qualify I need to finish within 8% of the winning elite time (on same course as elites) in three USAT sanctioned events that offer an elite/ pro prize purse. I have the ability, and drive, but I don't have an awesome bike, or a lot or money. Should I try to get sponsored? Do I need a coach? Chris asks: I work at a restaurant and am on my feet all day, mostly from 7am-5pm. Since I know my legs and me are going to be extremely tired after work, I have to fit in my half Ironman triathlon training before work usually doing 1-3 hours of intense training (mostly interval based) in one of the disciplines. What should I do to optimize recovery throughout the day since I cannot sit down and rest? In my response to Chris, I mention this topical magnesium. Paul asks: My wife (43) has been suffering from extreme tiredness, despite around 10 months at the gym and keeping to a good diet plan.  Her Doctor has recommended a CardioForLife supplement.  Thought I'd run it past you before giving it a try: http://mycardio4life.postaffiliatepro.com/sites/1722/mycardio4life/ Chris asks: You mentioned in one of your previous podcasts, that soy is inflammatory. Is all soy inflammatory including less processed and "healthy" (at least a lot of people believe so) forms like plain tofu, edamame, soy beans,  and soy milk? How much is too much? In my response to Chris, I play a clip from Garden Variety Tri. Melanie asks: I know of several exercises that are for the low back, but I'd like to know what you think are the top five exercises for strengthening your lower back and preventing low back pain?  I'm not overweight, so I don't have a gut pulling on me and my abs are in okay shape.  I know that makes a difference for your lower back.  I asked for five because I like variety in my workouts. In my response to Melanie, I recommend hip flexor stretching, hip external rotator foam rolling, low back stabilized crunches, deadlift and planking. I also mention my RunWithNoPain book. Joe asks: About a year ago I  decide to challenge myself with something that would require me to focus both on endurance training and weight training. My plan is to bench press 300 pounds and run a marathon in under 4 hours in the same day (I have not done either to date). Is this something you have ever considered or have you heard of anyone doing these sorts of challenges that require two completely different training modes? In my response to Joe, I mention a paper on concurrent strength and endurance training, and recommend he do his training in blocks. First Name Last Name Email Cell # (1+area code) --------------------------------------------------------------- Featured Topic: Are You Exercising Too Hard? In this week’s interview, I speak with Dr. Phil Maffetone, an endurance expert and someone who developed many of the protocols used today in aerobic training, including the Maffetone Method. Dr. Phil Maffetone is described as “one of the most sought-after endurance coaches in the world.” He entered the endurance sports scene in the late 70’s. In addition to working with some of the world’s top endurance athletes, Dr. Maffetone has written dozens of books and articles on health, fitness and nutrition, including The Big Book of Endurance Training and Racing and In Fitness and In Health. During our interview, Dr. Maffetone discusses: -using heart rate variability to track whether you are training too hard -using aerobic testing to track whether you are training too hard -what to do if you find out you are training too hard -how to know if you are overtrained -and much more! One tool Dr. Maffetone mentions during our interview, is the ithlete app for measuring heart rate variability. --------------------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: Prior to asking your question, PLEASE be considerate and do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. 90% of the questions we receive have already been asked and answered here at BenGreenfieldFitness.com! ====================================== [contact-form-7 id="6222" title="Ask Ben"] ====================================== Craig has a call-in question about how to organize your gear when you are training. Dave asks: What's your opinion on Intravenous Vitamin Therapy, like a Meyer’s Cocktail? Is it an effective alternative for an athlete to do instead of taking 10-20 pills a day?  Should it as a one time deal to get your levels back to normal or more of a maintenance thing? I think it would be extreme for a healthy athlete to get an IV once a week forever. Kassidy asks: I was diagnosed with PCOS a year ago and my doctor prescribed Orthotricyclen so it would regulate my hormones. I was very low in progestin, estrogen and the FSH hormone. I am sure there are others but those are the hormones that my doctor mentioned are the most important. I’ve become more health conscious since then but I am now figuring out that putting synthetic hormones into my body probably isn’t the best way to treat my PCOS. I’m 23 years old and I would eventually like to have kids so I want to treat my body well so that I can live a long healthy life as well has have children. I just did what my doctor told me to, but now that I have more knowledge I’m questioning what I should do. Do you have any advice as to what supplements, diet, exercise, lifestyle habits, etc. that I should change? John asks: What is the deal with VDOT and the Jack Daniels training method? As I understand it, you train your running to a pace and not necessarily heart rate or perceived effort.  I have calculated my VDOT and  paces and the paces seem slow to me, especially the interval pace.  Is this method worthwhile?  Do you use or others you know use it?  Are the suggested training volumes correct? In my response to John, I mention this VDot Calculator   Mike asks: My question is related to exercising and giving blood. I am 53 years old, a larger runner (~215 - 6'1") and normally run marathons to mid distance ultras (albeit now nearer the back of the pack) and was working my mileage back up after 9 months of struggling with injuries and inconsistent running. I thought I was starting to make good progress and then I gave blood. I have given blood for 35 years so I thought I was used to the effects but I did the double red blood cell donation and it seemed to set back my stamina more than I remember. I know I can't give blood for 16 weeks, twice the normal 8 week period and I get that the red blood cells carry oxygen but I was still surprised that after 2 weeks it seemed to still be effecting me. The first week was really a struggle, week 2 was better but not normal. So I guess my question is, is this normal and how long does it take for the stamina to return after giving blood and is there any positive effect from exercising while my red blood cells regenerate? Matt asks: What are your thoughts on Smart Balance Peanut Butter?   Do you think this is a better choice than regular Smucker's Natural PB? Anonymous asks: I was listening to an episode of Endurance Planet in which you were a guest. You talked about how many people unintentionally over train for races and that there was no reason to do a 20 mile run 10 weeks out from a marathon. I am following a marathon training program that has me doing just that. What type of marathon training program do you reccommend? In my response to anonymous, I mentioned Marathon Dominator. Jim asks: You mentioned on the last podcast you are spending a significant amount of time lately in the sauna to prepare for the 70.3 world championships.  I plan on doing the same thing to prepare for Kona in 5 weeks.  What do you recommend in terms of frequency and amount of time to spend in the sauna as the race gets closer? Darren asks: I wanted to ask three questions: 1) I had been building up my mileage from zero. I didn't run very far but I made the stupid mistake of pushing my pace beyond my bodies ability and ended up injuring myself. I'm going in for surgery on Thursday for cartilage damage.  That won't knock me back but I wanted to ask am I mad getting into Triathlons after one ACL reconstruction and then this surgery on my other knee? 2) What kind of supplements would you recommend for someone with a history of bad knees who is trying to get into triathlons 3) Your BulletProof Knee knee programme is designed for people with an IT Band injury.  Would this be beneficial for people with other types of knee injuries? Finally, listener Luke has a call-in question about Triathlon Dominator and Bulletproof Knee programs. My only issue with it seems to be the increased risk of injury...especially with running. How would you suggest keeping the risk of injury low while still going hard? Scott asks: Have you heard of Whole Body Vibration? Thoughts? Is it safe? Chuck asks: Last week I had an impedance test done. I'm sure you know what it is, but they connect electric pads to you ankle and wrist and an electric current is sent between. Based on the time it takes, it measures your body fat, water, cell health, and water in your cells. The problem is, I don't recall what each of these measure, but for someone in great shape and very healthy, some of my ranges we low? Can you talk a little about this and why I may be low? Here were my results: Body fat: 2.9% Resistance: 404.0 ohms Reactance (Xc): 37.8 (I don't have the ranges, but I think this was one of the level she told me was low) Impedance (Z): 406.7 (Impedance (symbol Z) is a measure of the overall opposition of a circuit to current, in other words: how much the circuit impedes the flow of current. It is like resistance, but it also takes into account the effects of capacitance and inductance. Impedance is measured in ohms, symbol) Phase Angle (like overall health of cell): 5.3 degrees. This was low- which is weird--why? Lance Armstrong's is about 12.0 Craig asks: I have found ice baths after a run work for me. However, when it is really hot outside I have trouble getting them cold enough (54-59 degrees). What I do now is run the water and then put 8 trays of ice plus all the ice my ice-maker has made since my last run in the tub. This doesn't get it cold enough. I know that I could buy a bag of ice from the grocery store but this is not very convenient. On the other hand, do you know of something I could buy that would be something I could just keep on hand? In my response to Craig, I mention this Blitz 110% post. Matthew asks: Is there any natural glycolic acid or AHA peels you recommend for mildly acne prone skin? I took your recommendation to eat sardines and I feel that this is helping my skin, but I still could use a good method to help remove dead skin from my sensitive face. Peter asks: Looking for your thoughts on S.A.D. seasonal affective disorder, winter blues, weight gain around holidays, etc... Laura asks: Have you heard of the ARP wave clinic? I have arthritis in my knee and was considering this therapy after exhausting many modalities up to this point. What are your thoughts? David asks: A company named JD Premium has put out a product names Adapt Energy that can be added to water or taken directly to help with energy and concentration. I have heard you talk about the advantages of some adaptogens in past podcasts. Based on the products contents, are these adaptogens? Are the ingredients harmful in any way? In my response to David, I mention this podcast with Roger Drummer. Shawn has a call-in question about cyclocross and how to increase his ability to move up to the next level. Robert asks: I have what I call "congenital inflexibility" I’ve now been into triathlons for about 2 years, becoming an endurance athlete for the first time in my life, and I’m really enjoying it. However, I do feel that my speed gains are being greatly limited by my inflexibility. For instance, in the swim I cannot stretch my arms straight past my ears. In the bike I am limited in my aero position, etc. I do some limited before and after stretching now, but I also know there are very mixed results in studies in whether stretching before or after exercise is actually helpful (at least in preventing injuries). In addition, I feel that whenever I spend too much effort stretching, attempt yoga, etc I am twice as likely to hurt myself. I am really worried that my inflexibility is going to hold me back, particularly in the swim. Do you think it's possible for someone who is totally inflexible to ever become reasonably flexible? In my response to Robert, I mention Resistance Stretching with Dara Torres. Brock asks: I get quite a lot of bloating and gas about an hour after I do a long or intense swim workout. I assume it is from gulping in too much air while I swim. Is there anyway to work on eliminating this issue? Are there any drills you can recommend that could help with this. It uncomfortable for me... and everyone around me. John asks: I swam 40 X 50 yard laps in an outdoor heated pool today and threw up. I had a piece of toast 1/2 hour before swimming, felt fine. I did not swallow a significant amount of chlorinated water during the swim. I was feeling fit and fine before and during the swim. Any comments? Jon asks: The other day I did some hard 800 meter repeats and I had some foamy sweat below the waist. Have you ever heard of this and what is it? -------------------------------------------- Remember, if you have any trouble listening, downloading, or transferring to your mp3 player just e-mail ben@bengreenfieldfitness.com And don't forget to leave the podcast a ranking in iTunes - it only takes 2 minutes of your time and helps grow our healthy community!
