075- What Autism Actually Looks Like- Autism in the Workforce

It happens often in late identified life, you share you are autistic with someone and they reply, “But you don’t look autistic.” This is what sparked my campaign last year #WhatAutismActuallyLooksLike #WhatAutismLooksLike to share that autism is part of adult life not just childhood. We had so many submissions for the video and it has been shared all over the globe and across social media platforms. AND it is making a difference!!! If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out on my YouTube Channel, Mind Your Autistic Brain in the playlist, What Autism Looks Like.

This year the What Autism Actually Looks like campaign theme is: Autism in the Workforce. I am leading the #NeurodistinctWorkforceMovement and the best way to begin shifting the broken narrative that we are only good at math or only work in Tech or IT is to showcase where we ACTUALLY are working.

The adult autistic population is grossly unemployed and underemployed not because we lack the skills or abilities, but because the workforce has not yet begun to truly understand the gift that our neurotype is to not just the workforce but to humanity. Let’s share who we are and what we do to make the workforce a place FOR US. It takes all of our voices to make a change.

How & What to submit:

Between March 1st and March 18th send in a photo of you working in your profession, this could be you at your desk, working with clients, or if you are in school for a profession right now share that as well. OR you can include a short video clip no more than 20 seconds in length showing what you do. Include the statement in your video, “I am autistic and I am a/work in (insert what your profession or field of industry here)” End with the phrase, “We are Autistic” Check out last year’s video for ideas.

DEADLINE to submit is midnight Eastern US Time Friday, March 18th. Send your submission to: CaroleJeanW(at)SocialAutie(dot com) with the SUBJECT Line: I Am Autistic.

If you want a tee shirt like the one I am wearing from the Autastic Shop and wear your shirt in April when the campaign goes live with the new video.

(You will be supporting an autistic owned business-Autastic)
