White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity by Robert P. Jones

PRRI.org

Drawing on history, public opinion surveys, and personal experience, Robert P. Jones delivers a provocative examination of the unholy relationship between American Christianity and white supremacy, and issues an urgent call for white Christians to reckon with this legacy for the sake of themselves and the nation.

As the nation grapples with demographic changes and the legacy of racism in America, Christianity’s role as a cornerstone of white supremacy has been largely overlooked. But white Christians—from evangelicals in the South to mainline Protestants in the Midwest and Catholics in the Northeast—have not just been complacent or complicit; rather, as the dominant cultural power, they have constructed and sustained a project of protecting white supremacy and opposing black equality that has framed the entire American story.

With his family’s 1815 Bible in one hand and contemporary public opinion surveys by Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) in the other, Robert P. Jones delivers a groundbreaking analysis of the repressed history of the symbiotic relationship between Christianity and white supremacy. White Too Long demonstrates how deeply racist attitudes have become embedded in the DNA of white Christian identity over time and calls for an honest reckoning with a complicated, painful, and even shameful past. Jones challenges white Christians to acknowledge that public apologies are not enough—accepting responsibility for the past requires work toward repair in the present.

White Too Long is not an appeal to altruism. Drawing on lessons gleaned from case studies of communities beginning to face these challenges, Jones argues that contemporary white Christians must confront these unsettling truths because this is the only way to salvage the integrity of their faith and their own identities. More broadly, it is no exaggeration to say that not just the future of white Christianity but the outcome of the American experiment is at stake.

Robert P. Jones is the CEO and Founder of PRRI and a leading scholar and commentator on religion, culture, and politics. He is the author of “White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity,” and “The End of White Christian America,” which won the 2019 Grawemeyer Award in Religion. Jones writes regularly on politics, culture, and religion for The Atlantic online, NBC Think, and other outlets. He is frequently featured in major national media, such as CNN, MSNBC, NPR, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and others. Jones serves on the national program committee for the American Academy of Religion and is a past member of the editorial boards for the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, and Politics and Religion, a journal of the American Political Science Association. He holds a Ph.D. in religion from Emory University, an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and a B.S. in computing science and mathematics from Mississippi College. Jones was selected by Emory University’s Graduate Division of Religion as Distinguished Alumnus of the Year in 2013, and by Mississippi College’s Mathematics Department as Alumnus of the Year in 201

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – MOSAIC Pieces: Surviving the Dark Side of American Justice by Wes Skillings

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – MOSAIC Pieces: Surviving the Dark Side of American Justice by Wes Skillings

MOSAIC Pieces: Surviving the Dark Side of American Justice by Wes Skillings https://www.amazon.com/MOSAIC-Pieces-Surviving-American-Justice/dp/B0FH7JYK55 A child’s murder and a rush to judgment still resonate more than fifty years later with lessons to be learned about American justice from a real-life murder case. The convicted murderer did his time, returned to his hometown of South Williamsport, PA, where the crime occurred, and yet the case against him refuses to retreat quietly into fading memories and a growing cache of the obituaries of those who played many of the prominent roles in this morality play. The impact on him and his family resonates as both tragedy and triumph with a case study that is as much a generational story in more innocent times as it is about the murder of a child in an all-American town known as the home of Little League Baseball. This story centers on an implausible murderer and his family – not that of the twelve-year-old victim and her family. And that’s a true crime reversal in itself. Other than one tragic realization, that is. Somebody got away with murder and, despite an impressive accumulation of exculpatory evidence widening cracks into chasms in the Commonwealth’s case presented in February of 1974, exoneration has eluded a family sacrificed for political gain and career expediency. “Mosaic Pieces,” a work of narrative nonfiction by Wes Skillings, might at its heart be a true crime story, but it encompasses so much more than a murder case. Make that several decades more-three generations of one family- with the evolving story of the crime serving as the keystone of this arching chronicle of guilt versus innocence. Subtitled “Surviving the Dark Side of American Justice,” this book reads like a novel supported by a detailed journalistic approach from a man who retired after almost four decades as a newspaper editor, reporter and columnist. The 1973-74 murder case itself is alternately fascinating and disturbing – if only because of what has been learned in the decades since the trial at the end of which Kim Lee Hubbard, 20, was convicted of murdering twelve-year-old Jennifer May Hill. He is a free man and has been for the past four decades and counting after paying his proverbial debt to society. Yet a debt is something you owe, and this convicted murderer, despite leading a productive and fulfilling life in the very community where the crime for which he was tried and convicted occurred, has his own debt to collect. The debt is exoneration for a crime he swears he didn’t commit and, as this true crime narrative that reads like a novel shows, one that relied on evidence that had been manipulated and manufactured. The arrest, trial and jury’s verdict required only four-and-a-half months from the day the child’s remarkably well-preserved body was found in a cornfield a few hundred yards from her home on October 28, 1973. She had been dead in that field, according to evidence proffered by the Commonwealth, for 216 hours (nine days) in unseasonably warm and dry October weather for Pennsylvania. And yet the body on the autopsy table the evening of October 29, 1973, “was as fresh as if she had died just the day before,” according to the man who picked up the body and later embalmed it. Acclaimed forensics experts on body decomposition and time of death stated without reservation that the body must have been refrigerated for all but 48 hours of those nine days. Other aspects of the case, including misuse and abuse of DNA by an apologist for the DA’s office, bring the impact of this story well into the 21st Century. Skillings offers readers the challenge to form their own impressions based on facts and expert opinions. Then again, it is a unique and thought-provoking true crime story with solid human-interest components and insights into murder case essentials like forensic science, expert witnesses, hypnotism of an eyewitness, evidential chain-of-custody and fast-and-loose DNA technology that is not questioned often enough. About the author Wes Skillings retired from newspaper journalism on April 1, 2011, after 38 years as a reporter, columnist and editor where, among his assignments for three different newspapers, he covered everything from municipal meetings to murder trials. He is a Vietnam vet with a BA in English from Mansfield (PA) University, formerly Mansfield State College, where he won a national writing award in 1971 with an essay in The Atlantic Magazine Creative Writing Contests for College Students. As a journalist, he received numerous Keystone Press Awards from the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association (PNA) — fifteen of them over his last 11 years in the business. Eight placed first in the state in their respective categories. His first award as a young reporter came years before in 1980—a first place from the Associated Press Managing Editors of Pennsylvania for exposing shoddy practices in a program overseen by a regional planning agency. After retirement he continued as a freelance copywriter producing corporate biographies and website content, as well as blogs on various topics on his own website.

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Kentucky Barracuda: Parker H. French by Joe Goodbody

The Chris Voss Show Podcast – Kentucky Barracuda: Parker H. French by Joe Goodbody

Kentucky Barracuda: Parker H. French by Joe Goodbody https://www.amazon.com/Kentucky-Barracuda-Parker-H-French/dp/1960224239 Parkerhfrench.com Parker Hardin French was certainly an adventurer and entrepreneur who engaged in elaborate, bold, and ambitious exploits but he was also a magnificent con-man-a barracuda. Those who followed his exploits were variously exasperated, captivated by his audacity and nervy cheek, or humored by his latest escapade. He was judged an incorrigible scoundrel, labeled a chronic megalomaniac, or peddled as a misunderstood victim of his enemies. Many believed him a hero- many just thought him insane. Some of his efforts may have begun as legitimate endeavors, but they inevitably resulted in double-crossed partners, betrayed allies. and swindled creditors. French was reported killed five times-twice killed in gunfights; executed in Mexico by both hanging and firing squad; and once killed in Nicaragua. For a short while there was a lapse of interesting press reports, so many just presumed that he was already dead, the victim of retribution or excessive alcohol. He ultimately died of natural causes-in his bed. In the era of steam, sail and horse, the rapidity of French’s movement and breadth of his adventures is almost mind-numbing. As a runaway kid he fought in the British Navy in the first Opium War. When he was just 22 years old, he was a commission merchant and, a year later, built the first ocean going ship on the upper Mississippi. Before he was 30, he was the leader of an infamous gold rush expedition; implicated in an irregular invasion of Cuba; jailed bandit and then a paramilitary hero in Mexico; lawyer, district attorney, legislator, journalist, and political enforcer in California; member of an American cabal which governed Nicaragua; and, appointed but rejected Nicaraguan ambassador to the United States. He did not slowdown in his 30s: he was a real estate developer; lawyer; journalist; part of a conspiracy to invade Mexico; suspected seditionist agitator and Confederate agent; jailed as a political prisoner; and, lawyer and purveyor for Union troops. His final days were spent in obscurity but the period was still peppered with the occasional swindle that garnered both regional and national attention. First and foremost, he was always a barracuda. About the author Author of the historical biography: KENTUCKY BARRACUDA: PARKER HARDIN FRENCH (1826-1878) Subtitle: The Notorious Scoundrel & Delightful Rogue of Antebellum and Civil War America. Parker French swindled my Great Grandfather. Born and raised in Escondido California; a fourth generation Californian. The nuns at St Mary’s Elementary (especially Sister Mary Arimathea) would be astonished that I ever learned to write a complete sentence or form a paragraph. A graduate of Escondido High School with a bachelor’s degree from University of Nebraska at Omaha and a masters from Florida Institute of Technology. Married for over 50 years to the love of my life; two sons and four grandkids. After a wonderful career of 28 years service, I retired from the United States Army as a Colonel. Retired again as a corporate leader.
