Artificial Intelligence, and Civic Ignorance

Artificial Intelligence, and Civic Ignorance

In this episode, I’m thinking about citizenship. September 17th is Constitution Day, marking its signing in 1787. This document is a constant source of debate – especially some of the amendments – but a lot of us really don’t know the Constitution very well. An Instagram video (https://www.instagram.com/reel/CxGbciArhYr/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) about this ignorance made me want to laugh and cuss at the same time. I’ll have more on the sorry state of civics, just ahead. But first: this week in Washington, US senators discussed the future of artificial intelligence with tech industry leaders. We’re already using AI in lots of ways: some cool, some creepy, some cringey. But if you think AI is on track to replace our humanity, I think that’s unlikely… at least, not for a while. And there’s one very human quality that no one is apparently thinking about teaching computers to emulate… or at least, we’re not hearing much about it.Liked this episode?
