State Governments’ Power to Regulate Industrial Alcohol

In April 2024, the Supreme Court heard 6 days of arguments on whether states government or the Union government had the power to regulate Industrial Alcohol. The 9-judge Bench in State of Uttar Pradesh v Lalta Prasad Vaish will decide whether the usage of the words "intoxicating liquor" only means drinking alcohol or includes industrial alcohol. This will further clarify whether the state governments or Union government will enjoy the power to regulate industrial alcohol or "denatured spirits".
