280: David Koresh and the Waco Siege- Part 2

On April 19th, 1993, FBI agents began pouring tear gas into a compound known as Mount Carmel in Waco, Texas. It was the final act of a 51 day standoff that had taken place between law enforcement and a religious group known as The Branch Davidians. After a failed attempt by the ATF to serve a warrant to arrest the group’s leader, David Koresh, for stockpiling illegal weapons, the standoff began. By the end, 82 Branch Davidians were dead, including 28 children, and four ATF agents had been killed. The country was left with questions that remain unanswered to this day, the most important one being, who was responsible for the 86 deaths that happened at Mount Carmel? On Memorial Day weekend of 1990, 40-year-old Marlene Warren heard the doorbell ring in her Palm Beach County home. When she opened the door, she was delighted to find a clown standing on the porch, holding two balloons and a basket of carnations. The clown handed the gifts to Marlene, then pulled out a gun and shot her in the face. Two days later, Marlene died in the local hospital, with nobody understanding who hated Marlene so much that they’d commit such a horrific crime. 276: The Groene Family Massacre (and the Survival of Shasta Groene)

276: The Groene Family Massacre (and the Survival of Shasta Groene)

On a Monday in May of 2005, deputies in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho responded to a call at the Groene residence. When they arrived, they found blood covering the walls and floors of the home. The bodies of the mother, Brenda, her boyfriend, Mark, and Brenda’s 13-year-old son, Slade, were lying on the living room floor, clearly victims of a vicious attack. A triple murder was unheard of in the small Idaho town. As they looked around the rest of the home, detectives realized that the two youngest Groenes, 8-year-old Shasta and 9-year-old Dylan were missing. There was no sign of the two anywhere on the property or in the surrounding area. Less than two months later, a waitress at a local Denny’s called 911 because she believed that Shasta was sitting in her restaurant. Police arrived to find the missing girl and her abductor, who was arrested immediately. But who was this man who’d committed a triple murder and a double kidnapping? It couldn’t have been a first time offender. Most importantly, where was Dylan Groene?
