Reddit Blackout

On June 12, 2023, thousands of subreddits went dark in protest of Reddit's decision to start charging third-party developers for access to its data starting in July. The blackout, which was organized by the r/RedditAlliance subreddit, affected some of the site's largest communities, including r/funny, r/gaming, and r/aww.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman has defended the decision to charge for API access, saying that it is necessary to help the company pay for its infrastructure and development costs. However, many Redditors are concerned that the new pricing will make it difficult or impossible for third-party developers to continue creating tools and apps that make Reddit a more enjoyable and useful platform.
