343 Industries, the studio behind the Halo franchise, has denied rumors that it has been taken off of lead development of the Halo franchise and has stated that it will continue to "develop Halo now and in the future". This statement was made by the studio head Pierre Hintze on Twitter. The news follows the mass layoffs of 10,000 people at Microsoft, which saw a number of employees at Xbox Game Studios, The Coalition, 343 Industries, and Bethesda let go. Rumors then started swirling that 343 Industries would be taken off lead development of the Halo franchise and would instead help third-party studios bring Halo to life in the form of new games. Activision Blizzard, the publisher of Overwatch 2 and World of Warcraft, has said that Chinese publisher NetEase declined a last-minute offer to extend their publishing deal in China. This means that services for games such as Overwatch 2, Hearthstone, and other Blizzard titles will be discontinued on January 23rd as planned. In November, the company announced that it was looking for alternative ways to bring its games to China but no further information has been revealed. As a result, World of Warcraft, Hearthstone, Warcraft III: Reforged, Overwatch 2, the StarCraft series, Diablo III, and Heroes of the Storm will no longer be playable in China. However, Diablo: Immortal, Blizzard’s mobile game, is published under a separate agreement and is unaffected at the moment. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick series, will direct Michael B. Jordan in the Tom Clancy sequel Rainbow Six, which will be a follow-up to 2021’s Without Remorse. Jordan will reprise his role as Navy SEAL and CIA operative John Clark, who has appeared in numerous Tom Clancy novels. The movie will adapt from the same novels that Ubisoft has based its video game series on. Stahelski will direct the movie and has become one of the best action directors in Hollywood. The European Parliament voted to adopt a report calling for the European Commission to address several issues in the games industry that it believes will better protect consumers, especially young people. The report was led by MEP Adriana Maldonado López and made more than a dozen recommendations, including harmonized rules across the European Union’s single market when providing clear information about games content and systems that help parents understand and control how much time and money their children spend on games. The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) age rating system was highlighted as an example of something that could deliver more transparent information about the content, target age group, and in-game purchase options to consumers. They also call for developers to “avoid designing games that feed an addiction,” and other actions recommended include prioritizing data protection, improving the gender imbalance in the industry’s workforce, and making it as easy for consumers to cancel a subscription as it is to sign up.
