Banned Books with Francisca Goldsmith - Episode 11

Banned Books with Francisca Goldsmith - Episode 11

The history of banned books dates back over 2300 years and has included legal proscription, moral edict, and, especially during war, burning of material; some religions dedicate bureaucracy to minding ban-able publications, such as the RC Index Librorum Prohibitorum; both western and eastern governments have practiced adjudicated banning efforts ranging from specific titles that have been “tried” judicially (Lady Chatterly’s Lover in England for example) to sweeping expungement of ideas published by a class or group, such as Nazi era book burnings and the less well known confiscation of texts by Jews or found in Jewish libraries during the Aunschluss.

In contemporary US, challenges and banning typically target titles aimed at audiences at three age groups, each of which age just happens to be one in which the young are gaining developmental independence in ways that frighten some adults (ages 4, 11, and 16).

Book Bans Have Tripled in the Last Year | Episode 115 | Book News

Book Bans Have Tripled in the Last Year | Episode 115 | Book News

PEN America has uncovered a disturbing trend in our latest findings: more than 10,000 instances of book bans in U.S. public schools during the 2023-2024 school year, nearly tripling last year's number. These bans predominantly target stories about LGBTQ+ characters, people of color, and books addressing women's sexual experiences or sexual abuse. With this surge driven by new state laws and "parental rights" advocacy groups, PEN America is raising urgent alarms about the chilling impact on students' freedom to read. Asian-American History For Young People | Episode 109

Asian-American History For Young People | Episode 109

GRAB A COPY OF Made in Asian America: A History for Young People here - https://amzn.to/3TzdZ1g or here - https://bookshop.org/a/22223/9780063242937. Asian American history is not made up of one single story. It’s many. And it’s a story that too often goes untold. It begins centuries before America even exists as a nation. It is connected to the histories of Western conquest and colonialism. It’s a story of migration; of people and families crossing the Pacific Ocean in search of escape, opportunity, and new beginnings. It is also the story of race and racism. Of being labeled an immigrant invasion, unfit to become citizens, and being banned, deported, and incarcerated. Of being blamed for bringing diseases into the country. And it is a story of bravery and hope. It is the story of heroes who fought for equality in the courts, on the streets, and in the schools, and who continue to fight in solidarity with others doing the same. This book is a stirring account of the ordinary people and extraordinary acts that made Asian America and the young people who are remaking America today.
