The Hammer of Francia: Charles Martel and the Battle of Tours

In 732, the forces of Charles Martel and the Umayyad governor Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi met near Tours in one of the most famous battles of the early medieval period.

Known as Charles the Hammer, Martel was the powerful Frankish leader who stood at the crossroads of a changing Europe. As Umayyad armies expanded from the Iberian Peninsula into southern Gaul, Charles moved to defend the Frankish kingdoms and secure his position as the dominant power in Francia.
