Sovereignty or interoperability. Your choice, anon. In the recent zeitgest of crypto builders has been the idea of achieving sovereignty while also keeping interoperability. Today, we’re diving into this with Avi Zurlo, Chief Product Officer of =nil; Foundation. For this conversation, we had a focus on sharding and how =nil; Foundation is approaching this choice. Since its inception, =nil; Foundation has been a key player in low-level cryptographic infrastructure, focusing heavily on ZK technology. With innovative products like ZK LLVM and a ZK proof marketplace, =nil; is all in on building a scalable ZK rollup, based on zkSharding. In this pod, we explore the important distinctions between sharding and rollup-centric scaling. We also discuss horizontal scaling, distributing workloads across multiple machines, and scaling without sacrificing decentralization (and of course, interoperability). We also look ahead to the roadmap which promises significant scalability, and a long-term oriented approach with the goal to be resilient for decades to come. As large believers and proponents of the modular thesis, we (along with other voices in the space) have identified fragmentation as a kink in the armor of modularity. We think chain abstraction solves a lot, if not _all_ of this subpar user experience. Chain abstraction is all about making the user experience seamless. It is an experience itself. In today’s podcast with Ethan, devrel at Particle Network, we explored the definition of chain abstraction, where Particle fits, as well as the three core components of chain abstraction: blockchain-level, account-level, and application-level solutions. Blockchain-level abstraction involves infrastructure solutions like AggLayer and Superchain, which provide shared security and unified bridging. Account-level abstraction, where Particle plays a major role, focuses on creating universal accounts that unify account states and balances across chains, giving users one address and one balance usable on any chain. Application-level abstraction allows developers to create chain-agnostic applications, orchestrating cross-chain workflows seamlessly (think Agoric, Socket, and others). We discussed the idea behind universal accounts, which leverage account abstraction to provide a unified balance and address across all chains. Finally, we discussed the Particle Network which is a Cosmos SDK based L1 which aims to maintain state parity across chains, ensuring secure and efficient transaction execution. We discussed their native token and the role it will play in this ecosystem. We are pretty bullish on future of chain abstraction as we believe it’s the next logical step in modularity, and crypto as a whole. For the final episode of our Bitcoin and Beyond series, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Taproot Wizards sorcerer and Bitcoin OG, Tyler Whittle. We took a deep dive into the world of Taproot Wizards and the intriguing OP-CAT mechanism, designed to enhance Bitcoin’s functionality. Taproot Wizards is a community dedicated to "making Bitcoin magical again". They are deeply rooted in Bitcoin culture and technology, aiming to push the boundaries of Bitcoin while not letting the ossification of Bitcoin happen. Basically, they are trying to avoid the "pet rock" do something meme. Their biggest contribution to the space is CatVM. We took a journey through a children’s book that cleverly explains Bitcoin’s scaling journey through lightning, BitVM, and eventually CatVM. Central to CatVM is OP-CAT, a simple yet powerful opcode which is just 8 lines of code, yet makes a massive change in the functionality of Bitcoin. Originally part of Bitcoin but disabled in 2010 by Satoshi (along with other opcodes), OP-CAT allows for covenants and finite state machines, unlocking new possibilities for Bitcoin transactions. Cryptoeconomic security has been an extremely hot topic as of recent. With the rise of restaking and the general concept of "extending economic security" to new applications/services, we have seen some of the brightest minds in the space dedicating their career to this idea. In today’s piece, we take a closer look at Babylon Protocol, a protocol that introduces staking to the Bitcoin community and has a focus on extending Bitcoin's economic security. We were joined by Sankha Banerjee, chief economist of Babylon, to address this topic. We talk about their integration which allows Bitcoin holders to lock their coins on the blockchain, participating actively in PoS systems and even taking on slashing risks in exchange for potential yields and upside. We discussed the technicals of their time lock mechanism that stakes Bitcoin while also providing economic support to other networks within ecosystems like Cosmos. Furthermore, we dove into the nitty gritty of slashing mechanism employed by Babylon, which is is designed to safeguard the network's consensus and integrity by penalizing faults such as double-signing through advanced cryptographic techniques. As we wrap up our Bitcoin and Beyond series this week, we had a chance to sit down with Robert Zaremba of BitCosm. BitCosm is building a Cosmos SDK based appchain that allows for programmable (and native) Bitcoin, leveraging the Bitcoin script and eventually BitVM. Being the same ecosystem as dWallet, BitCosm has a zero trust model, which eliminates the need for bridges and significantly reduces security risks. The dWallet Network plays a crucial role here, enabling secure, decentralized transactions across chains without compromising security. In this presentation, we learned about the IBC Gateway as a means for more secure bridging, how BitCosm enables the conversion of dWallet assets into IBC tokens, how programmable & native Bitcoin works, and the ins and outs of "zero trust" interoperability with native Bitcoin. We've been diving heads first into the technical design structure of Bitcoin L2s over the last two weeks with the goal of uncovering what is really happening behind the scenes in this space. Today's video, we did just that with Jagdeep Sindhu. Jag is a seasoned Bitcoin OG and has a strong opinion about the acceptable trust assumptions in Bitcoin scaling designs. Jag's vision is to transform Bitcoin into a 'super chain' where utility and security are both achievable without unnecessary tradeoffs. Rollux uses merge mining to borrow Bitcoin's security, while introducing chain locks every fifth block to enforce finality and prevent long-range attacks on the sidechain. They also have their own zk based DA solution which powers their chain. By combining elements of PoW and PoS for enhanced security, Rollux is trying to build secure interoperability solution. We discussed the future outlook for Rollux being a secure transfer hub for Bitcoin and other chains like Ethereum and Avalanche as well. Alpen Labs is a project that is making significant strides in the world of ZK rollups. We're sure you've heard of zero knowledge proofs through our various pieces with industry leaders, but have you heard of zero trust protocols? From what we understand, its a newly coined term to describe the multi party computation tech utilized by the dWallet team. In today's presentation, we take a closer look at the evolution from the "castle and moat" model to zero trust. We discussed how traditional internet companies initially used the castle and moat model, but shifted towards zero trust due to its enhanced security. We went on to discuss how dWallet Network is reintroducing zero trust in cross-chain environments using cryptographic techniques like a new MPC protocol, 2PC MPC. 2PC MPC ensures transactions require user participation, maintaining zero trust even if validators collude. This approach is crucial for maintaining Bitcoin's security ethos while enabling advanced functionalities, such as decentralized custody solutions, staking, atomic swaps, lending, and other cross-chain functionalities. Applying zero trust in cross-chain environments is complex due to having to settle different blockchain states and the necessity to trust third parties for this state validation. We discuss how dWallet is setting the standard for what this should look like using their zero trust protocols.
