Other than the End of the World and the Fall of Democracy, How Did You Like the Decade, Mrs. Lincoln?

In the last episode of not just 2019 but of the entire decade for Deep State Radio, we gather Rosa Brooks of Georgetown Law, Stephen Walt of Harvard's Kennedy School, David Sanger of the New York Times and Ed Luce of the Financial Times to reflect on the ten years just past. We identify the big geopolitical trends from the rise of China (and Russia) to the spread of ethno-nationalism and the boom times for both demagogues and billionaires. The climate crisis got worse. So did inequality. Democracy teetered at the brink in America. And...egg nog anyone? Have a few drinks and settle in for a look back and what it means to all of us going forward. NTK: We Need More Dems Going Scorched Earth to Defend America from MAGA & Trump

The Supreme Court has officially ruled that Donald Trump’s stormtroopers could stop anybody based on their race, accent, or whatever they damn well please and force them to prove their citizenship. They also recently ruled that the President can fire anybody on the Federal Trade Commission, upending all legal precedent. What is the Supreme Court doing? Where is the Democratic response? The New Republic editor Michael Tomasky joins David Rothkopf to discuss all this and more. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

AI, Energy and Climate: Amory Lovins: Reflections of an AI Skeptic

AI, Energy and Climate: Amory Lovins: Reflections of an AI Skeptic

Amory Lovins has been a leading thinker on energy policy for more than 50 years. Several months ago he wrote an article with the provocative title "Artificial Intelligence Meets Natural Stupidity." As the title suggests, Lovins is skeptical about AI in a number of respects – in particular about the electricity it will require. Listen as host David Sandalow talks with Lovins about AI power demand forecasts, the role of natural gas and renewables, AI in education, a proposal to require all payments to electric utilities by new large loads such as data centers to be bonded or insured, and more.\ Amory Lovins, Artificial Intelligence Meets Natural Stupidity (May 2025), https://integrative-design-for-radical-energy-efficiency.stanford.edu/sites/extreme_energy_efficiency/files/media/file/data-centersaiel-dr-16-10-may-2025.pdf Learn more about your ad choices. The Daily Blast: Kash Patel Is Such a Fiasco for Trump that Even Fox Just Admitted It

The Daily Blast: Kash Patel Is Such a Fiasco for Trump that Even Fox Just Admitted It

In a surprise, Fox News is reporting that the knives are out for FBI director Kash Patel due to many recent missteps, including the botching of key facts about the hunt for Charlie Kirk’s assassin. That this is being featured by Fox News may be a sign of how dire Patel’s internal standing has truly become. Yet we’re in the middle of a complicated moment. Even as Patel’s tenure is beset with follies, Stephen Miller just unleashed a vile rant making it clear that Trump is about to turn federal law enforcement loose on the liberal-left in a big way, all fake-justified by Charlie Kirk’s assassination. So we talked to Asha Rangappa, a former FBI special agent who now writes a good Substack called “The Freedom Academy.” She explains why Patel compares so woefully to his predecessors, what the coming mass repression campaign could look like, how the FBI might figure into that, and how we’ll know things are getting really bad.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? The Daily Blast: Trump’s Threats Darken on Fox News as MAGA Rage over Kirk Boils Over

The Daily Blast: Trump’s Threats Darken on Fox News as MAGA Rage over Kirk Boils Over

In an appalling move, President Trump went on Fox News and openly suggested that far-right political violence is typically justified as a response to left-wing extremism. This functionally tells Trump supporters that it is now open season on the liberal-left after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Trump also signaled he will use the power of the state to exact retribution on Trump-MAGA's designated scapegoats for Kirk’s killing. This comes as eruptions of MAGA fury over Kirk’s death, including calls for mass violence, are rising to alarming levels, making Trump’s encouragement even more depraved. We talked to Will Sommer, who closely tracks the far right as a staff writer for The Bulwark. He discusses how far-right individuals and groups will take Trump’s signals as “sanction,” notes the “all-consuming anger” he’s seeing, and suggests we may see more organized violence coming from those precincts going forward.  Looking for More from the DSR Network?
