Richard Koo: How Excessive Corporate Debt Could Thwart Future Economic Growth

Richard Koo: How Excessive Corporate Debt Could Thwart Future Economic Growth

Richard Koo, chief economist at Nomura Research Institute, returns to Real Vision to update his framework on how key economic variables such cash, liquidity, savings, and debt have been impacted by the global recession. In this interview with Real Vision managing editor Ed Harrison, Koo applies to the current situation his noted theory of a "balance sheet recession" in which liquidity is ample, but the private sector nevertheless remains focused on paying down debt. Koo and Harrison analyze the interplay between the economic shutdown and economic growth. Lastly, Koo shares his views about quantitative easing, negative interest rates, central bank digital currencies, and ongoing efforts by central banks to stem the damage wreaked by the pandemic. Recorded on January 29, 2021 Key learnings: Koo thinks that the unprecedented interventions of central banks were necessary to meet the once-in-a-lifetime crisis of COVID-19. Like many, Koo expects that economic growth will pick up once pent-up demand is unleashed. However, after this spurt of economic activity, Koo thinks that the overhang of debt could cause a significant balance sheet recession that is contractionary and deflationary. Accelerating Returns in The Exponential Age

Accelerating Returns in The Exponential Age

The Interview: Azeem Azhar, founder of Exponential View, joins Real Vision managing editor Ed Harrison to explain how the accelerating pace of technological progress is rapidly transforming business and life as we know it. Azhar identifies how technologies such as vaccines, renewable energy, and additive manufacturing (commonly known as "3D printing") are advancing at a rate faster than previously thought possible. He and Harrison discuss the "winner-take-all" dynamics of technological process, and Azhar argues that the era of "diminishing returns" and economies of scale is over—there is no limit to how much market share a company can command, save for government regulation. Accordingly, Azhar thinks there could be some "pitchfork risk" of a populist backlash. He and Harrison discuss the implications of this as well as universal basic income, potential bubble signals, and crypto. Recorded on May 12, 2021. This effect can create a world in which companies can expand their operations with accelerating, rather than diminishing, returns. Learn more about your ad choices. Future Trouble in Macro? Liquidity Traps and a Slowing Global Credit Impulse

Future Trouble in Macro? Liquidity Traps and a Slowing Global Credit Impulse

The Interview: Could a slowdown in credit creation and a tightening of monetary conditions push bond yields lower and threaten risk assets? Alfonso Peccatiello, fixed income investor and publisher of the Macro Compass, believes that’s possible. Peccatiello contends that inflation is indeed transitory, and, disagreeing with the "bond vigilantes," he argues that cash, bonds, and volatility protection will perform better in this environment than high-beta assets such as commodities and bank stocks. Interviewed by Real Vision’s Jack Farley on July 2, 2021. Peccatiello's blog, The Macro Compass, can be found here: https://themacrocompass.substack.com/. Learn more about your ad choices.
