Shat on TV listeners begging us to cover "House of The Dragon" finally get their wish in this week's Shat The Movies feature: "Arthur." Dudley Moore and John Gielgud aren't household names in America, but the two English legends created an 1981 comedy alongside the goddess Liza Minnelli that distilled the essence of New York. "Arthur" led the Shat Crew to conversations about Christopher Cross' theme song for the movie, being stage drunk, surprise tears, unnecessary cruelty, Russell Brand, the pressure of growing up wealthy and how Scotch led to the prevalence of roosters in '90s New Orleans kitchens. Few directors have polarized the Shat Crew's wipe scores the way David Lynch has, and few David Lynch movies are as polarizing as "Blue Velvet." With odd peccadillos, unsettling violence, over-the-top symbolism and entrancing dreamlike sequences, this 1986 had Ash gushing and the boys cringing.  But talk about a career-builder! "Blue Velvet" changed the way moviegoers saw Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan. It gave us a more straightforward Lynch tale, and it recalibrated the Shat The Movies definition of surprise boobs. Whether you view it as a masterful depiction of primal human behavior hidden behind a suburban veneer or just a really weird movie with some of the worst dirty talk ever filmed, "Blue Velvet" is definitely one to watch ... but maybe not rewatch. When a shooter attacked their beloved Highland Park on July 4, it was our duty and honor to be there for them. Shat The Movies has covered "The Silence of The Lambs," but that wasn't enough for film elitists who scoff at the mainstream appeal of Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecktor and Jodi Foster's Clarice Starling. They insisted we review the movie that started it all: "Manhunter." It was hard to validate this movie without comparing it to everything that came after: Buffalo Bill dancing to "Goodbye Horses," Mads Mikkelsen bringing sex appeal to the series or Frederick Chilton getting some flesh to his character. But that's OK, because those comparisons revealed some of "Manhunter's" subtle strengths. In this episode, Gene admits he doesn't understand some of Michael Mann's artsy decisions; Big D illuminates some of the guerilla filmmaking that went into "Manhunter;" and Ash gets pissed on behalf of murder victims' families. The Shat Crew also discusses Brian Cox's version of Hannibal, chuckles at William Petersen's spirited self-talk and explores whether a little romance can help elevate an '80s thriller.
