Plot Summary:

In the 1987 drama Less Than Zero, directed by Marek Kanievska and based on Bret Easton Ellis's controversial novel, Andrew McCarthy stars as Clay, a clean-cut college freshman who returns home to Los Angeles for Christmas break. He is immediately pulled back into the troubled world he left behind, filled with the excesses and temptations of the wealthy, decadent 1980s elite. At the center of this world are his two close friends: Julian (Robert Downey Jr.), a charming but self-destructive young man battling a severe drug addiction, and Blair (Jami Gertz), Clay's former girlfriend who is now romantically involved with Julian.

Clay is quickly confronted with the devastating consequences of his friends' choices. Julian, once a promising entrepreneur, is now deeply in debt to a ruthless drug dealer named Rip (James Spader). As Julian spirals further into his addiction, Clay is torn between his desire to help his friend and his growing frustration with the hedonistic lifestyle that seems to be consuming everyone around him. Blair, caught in her own struggles, pleads with Clay to stay and help save Julian, forcing Clay to face the harsh realities of addiction and the consequences of unchecked privilege.

As the trio navigates a world filled with drugs, parties, and moral decay, Clay must decide how far he's willing to go to save his friends from themselves. The film offers a stark look at the hollow core of a generation lost in the pursuit of pleasure and materialism, set against the backdrop of a glittering but soulless Los Angeles.

Less Than Zero is a haunting exploration of friendship, loss, and the dark side of 1980s excess. Join our podcast review as we examine this gritty drama and discuss whether its portrayal of youthful disillusionment and moral ambiguity still resonates with audiences today.

Silverado (1985)

Silverado (1985)

What would happen if a random group of Hollywood actors at an '80s cocktail party decided to make a Western? We found out with listener Jim Batten's commission of "Silverado." On paper, this movie has it all. Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed it. Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Brian Dennehy, Rosanna Arquette, and Scott Glenn starred in it. And the soundtrack flew off shelves. But "Silverado" also includes a few interesting casting choices like Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Linda Hunt, and Kevin Kline. The good guys grin their way through a "Westworld"-like environment with "Game of Thrones"-level plot armor, and glass is breaking EVERYWHERE.  In this episode, Big D finally gets his training montage, Ash wishes "Silverado" were a TV series, and Gene marvels at pearls of Western wisdom. Three O'Clock High (1987)

Three O'Clock High (1987)

Just when we thought we'd covered every '80s high school movie, listener Jen treated her husband and us to "Three O'Clock High," a sleeper comedy with a lovable hero, a horny teacher, and a climactic fight. "Three O'Clock High" got it right where lots of its peers got it wrong: Friends and siblings treat each other with genuine care. Each scene delivers on its punchlines. And Tangerine Dream's soundtrack actually makes the movie better. In this episode, Big D mansplains what "short" means and wonders if Buddy Revell is the king of '80s movie bullies. Ash spreads crack-baby rumors and asks about planned fights. And Gene attacks a Karen. The Shat Crew also discusses whether it's become the "Family Guy" of podcasts and argues that Casey Siemaszko would have made a terrific Marty McFly. Ladyhawke (1985)

Ladyhawke (1985)

People are always complaining that Hollywood's run out of ideas: Everything's a remake or a sequel or a comic book movie. But in 1985, things were wild. Wanna make a movie about a guy who turns into a wolf and a chick who turns into a bird so that they can never be together? Go for it; we'll even throw in Matthew Broderick and a score by Alan Parsons. The Shat Crew's been waiting a long time to do "Ladyhawke," but it took listener Jose to stand up, raise his sword high in the air, and dedicate this medieval fantasy in the name of true love. It's a movie that taught us not to take "Game of Thrones" for granted, a movie that Ash felt needed talking animals, and a movie that made Big D ponder life's big questions, like "Can a crossbow shoot a hawk in flight?" and "How does a werewolf get his clothes back?" But most of all, "Ladyhawke" was a movie that bet on Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Alfred Molina being able to bring a wild-ass tale with a funky-ass soundtrack to life. How did they do? Listen and find out.  SUBSCRIBEAndroid: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACTEmail: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCASTDonate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Taps (1981)

Taps (1981)

If you thought our "Red Dawn" episode was unpredictable and juvenile, buckle up for "Taps." This military-versus-civilians, young-against-old, leaders-versus-condominiums drama from 1981 introduced the world to Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Timothy Hutton, and the king of wacky screen deaths, Giancarlo Esposito.  "Taps" also highlighted what was so great about George C. Scott's portrayal of General George S. Patton, what was so terrible about Junior ROTC, how TikTok could have saved Bunker Hill Academy, and why young Gene Lyons always had a coin up his ass. Hear Judge Ash preside over John Rambo's involuntary manslaughter trial and draw the lines between "Taps" and "Les Miserables." Witness a beloved Gene arguing that "Taps" is basically Shakespeare. And discover the secrets of the Hot Carl and the Stinky Pinky with Dick Ebert. The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

The Last of the Mohicans (1992)

If you hate Gene, you'll love our "The Last of the Mohicans" episode. Ash is at the helm, with Dick Ebert and guest host Kevin R. Brackett (Reel Spoilers) rounding out the crew to explore romance, frontier life, and Big D's virginity.  When it comes to period dramas from the early '90s, things often get a little goofy, but "The Last of the Mohicans" stands apart by getting a lot of things right: breathtaking cinematography, animalistic attraction, a killer score, historical accuracy, the chaos of battle, and the pain of sacrifice.  Are the characters a little flat? Maybe. Is Hawkeye superhuman? Debatable. Is the Shat Crew gonna talk about old-timey sex? Oh, absolutely. Jacob's Ladder (1990)

Jacob's Ladder (1990)

"Shat The Movies" fans are horror fans, so we jumped at the chance to do a scary movie outside October. When longtime listener Carmelita commissioned "Jacob's Ladder," the Shat Crew collectively squealed. This 1990 Tim Robbins banger did lots of things we'd later see in '90s movies and beyond: non-linear storytelling, the questioning of reality, faceless doctors, and that wiggly head thing from Tool music videos. But it didn't stop there: "Jacob's Ladder" flipped the horror genre on its head by actually addressing death, not just killing. In this episode, Big D crushes Gene's romanticism about '70s New York City. Ash gives a crash course on the fragility of memory, and all three hosts marvel at just how cute Macaulay Culkin was at 9 years old. What did the ending mean? We'll get into that, too. Friday (1995)

Friday (1995)

"Friday" wasn't the easiest episode to record, but it's one of our new favorites. After Big D recovered from his Strawberry Festival-induced hospitalization, the Shat Crew convened to debate whether certified stars like Chris Tucker, John Witherspoon, Regina King, "Tiny" Lister, Bernie Mac, and Michael Clarke Duncan could elevate a Zig-Zag-thin plot to a '90s comedy classic. In this episode, we discuss how Ice Cube and DJ Pooh succeeded in their mission to show a different side of the 'hood, how weed helped Big D "make it a Blockbuster night," and why it sometimes pays to party in dangerous places. Big D implores today's youth to "live in the moment" as we also cover the bathroom habits of POC, why Ash can't shower alone, "the conditions" in Atlanta, and terrible fight scenes.  SUBSCRIBEAndroid: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACTEmail: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCASTDonate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

The Grifters (1990)

The Grifters (1990)

"Tequila Sunrise" commissioner Rachel C. returns with another '90s movie full of sexy people doing confusing things. This week, it's "The Grifters," a 1990 neo-noir thriller that proves even John Cusack, Anjelica Huston, and Annette Bening have their off days. This movie about con people and the con people who love them led to such classy topics as discount grandmas, boob fingerprints, nostalgia trolls, and the kinds of sexual favors landlords can reasonably expect from tenants attempting to seduce them. "The Grifters," nominated for multiple Academy Awards, also brought us the most unlikely death in Shat history and possible the worst heist since "Safe Men," proving critics love anything that hearkens back to old timey movies.  SUBSCRIBEAndroid: https://shatpod.com/android Apple: https://shatpod.com/apple All: https://shatpod.com/subscribe CONTACTEmail: hosts@shatpod.com Website: https://shatpod.com/movies Leave a Voicemail: Web: https://shatpod.com/voicemail Leave a Voicemail: Call: (914) 719-7428 SUPPORT THE PODCASTDonate or Commission: https://shatpod.com/support Shop Merchandise: https://shatpod.com/shop Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite
