Episode 1 - My home, my choice

[Episode 1 Transcript: Zulejha: “Hi, welcome to an edition of The Melba Loop. I’m with Dave Glazebrook, Melba’s General Manager of Innovation and Development. So Dave, I’d love to hear you thoughts today, can you answer for me why is it so important for a person with a disability to have a home of their choice?” Dave: “This is because we’re building a range of homes for people with a disability. Melba for many years was lucky with 10% saying of them were saying they were living where they wanted and with whom they wanted. A lot of people in group homes, they are living with four or five other people. They may or may not have a choice or may or may not get on with those four or five other people. So in my life and in your life, we get to choose who we live with. For people with disability, quite often they don’t get that choice - so that’s why choosing where you live and then with whom is really important. So there’s people we have the pleasure of working for, generally need to live on their own most of the time, or just want to live with a friend - that’s what it is. Not sort of in a home with a group of other people. So the choice that the general population has, and I generalise, most people get to choose the parameters and the limits they have, where they live and who they live with. The same should apply to people with disabilities. The same rights as everybody else.” Zulejha: “Great, thank you.”]
