#268 STONER DOOM METAL VOL. 7: THE SEARCH FOR DOOM

“It’s all the same…only the names will change…”

Sometimes, just like with “identical” twins, identifying the differences between subgenres can be difficult. Sure, they may seem the same, but there are subtle differences between the two that make them unique as individuals. Similarly, as with the “speed metal vs thrash metal” debate which has persisted since the 80’s, so continues the everlasting debate between Stoner and Doom metal:

Are they the same? Or are they different?

And if they ARE different, then WHAT is the difference?

In short, both Stoner AND Doom metal trace the source of each of its respective origins back to Black Sabbath, with each possessing an arsenal of crushing riffs, tuned down guitars, and slow, heavy, trudging tempos. But if there were a single distinction to draw the line between these two subgenres, then that line has to be within the lyrical subject matter, as shown by the following logic*:

IF drug references, THEN stoner metal.

IF not, THEN doom metal.
