Episode 157: Albany, NY - 5/12/2006

Episode 157: Albany, NY - 5/12/2006

The 2006 tour is seen as Pearl Jam's last massive rigorous touring year in their catalog. Supporting the Self Titled, or better known as Avocado record, they were finding their groove with new songs while also emptying their tank of all their songs with long droughts of not being played. The Albany show that we cover in this episode takes place just over a week after the album's release, and while nine of those thirteen songs were showcased, the band went through and did some digging deep into the back catalog to bring back a few that hadn't seen the live stage in a number of years - Red Mosquito, that had been played on the previous tour year but held off for 40 straight shows, Satan's Bed, which was haphazardly brought back at State College in 2003 but played for the first legitimate time since 1996, and Rats which had only been played twice in the Matt Cameron era. Rats is the big one from this set that most fans will remember since it had gone 224 shows on the shelf. Later that month, the band would end up adhering to another popular drought request, Leash, and then eventually the elusive Dirty Frank. This show is defined by it's rarities just as much as it's defined by the brand new songs energizing them. Wasted Reprise/Life Wasted combo opening the show was something they didn't break out very often, and after this era songs like Marker In The Sand, Army Reserve and Gone were pushed aside. We'll get to talk extensively about some of these tracks and how fresh they felt being played for only a single digit amount of times till that point. Episode 29: Live At The Garden - 7/8/03

Episode 29: Live At The Garden - 7/8/03

A legendary performance in a legendary venue that turned into a legendary concert DVD. We continue our year long MSG series focusing on the band's 3rd time playing the famous arena and it's one of their most iconic shows of all-time. Randy and Matt have a lot to discuss in this episode, including how this show was one of the first live exposure that Randy had to the band. From the moment the DVD showcased the black and white photos of NYC landmarks and dissolved into the piping organ of Love Boat Captain, there's a certain aura you can feel. It paved the way for a night chock full of amazing moments. Of those moments, none may be more memorable than the appearance of long time Pearl Jam friend Ben Harper. His rendition of Indifference and the tag of With My Own Two Hands on Daughter go down as two of the best collaborations that have ever happened on a Pearl Jam stage. We talk about how Harper captured two major emotional moments from this show and how people still talk about them to this day. Also, lest we forget that this was the night they SHOOK the stage at the Garden during Do The Evolution! Legend be told at the time, they shared this distinction with only the Grateful Dead, Iron Maiden and Bruce Springsteen. Was this the moment that turned Pearl Jam from great band into legendary band? Episode 28: West Palm Beach, FL - Night 1 - 8/9/00

Episode 28: West Palm Beach, FL - Night 1 - 8/9/00

We head back to the 2000 Binaural tour for this episode to cover the first of two nights of a stay at West Palm Beach. To help us cover this show is Florida native and fellow Pearl Jam podcaster Jessi Zilka who hosts over at The Porch Podcast. This is the first time we cover Oceans on a non-Patreon episode, so you guys finally get to hear why Matt has such a distaste for the song. It's been and will always be a hot button topic on this show and we're sure that we'll get our fair share of hate mail for it. Two out of three people on this episode enjoy the opener, so that should hold people off for now. Outside of Oceans, this show is a lot more straightforward and positive than other shows we've touched on lately and that's mainly because it's just an all out great rock n roll spectacle. Mostly everything is played well, not a lot of argument for set placement or variety. Nothing As It Seems was one of the standouts on this show where you could really feel the energy translate from the stage to the crowd. For all of you who want more exclusive episodes, head on over to our Patreon account at patreon.com/liveon4legs to donate and receive access to both New Year's Eve 92 and VH1 Storytellers episodes, with more new exclusive episodes to follow. Episode 27: Belfast, N. Ireland - 6/23/10

Episode 27: Belfast, N. Ireland - 6/23/10

Top o' the mornin' to ya! On the eve's eve of St. Patrick's Day, we give to you our first episode covering a show on the Emerald Isle. However, this is Northern Ireland, and apparently that's completely different from Ireland? We're yanks, we don't know better. Anyway, if you can believe it, nine years ago was the last time they made a stop in Ireland at this very show in Belfast and to date this has been their only performance in Northern Ireland. It's kind of surprising, as you'll hear us talk all throughout the episode the crowd was on fire all night. Why wouldn't they go back when they've frequented Europe multiple times since Backspacer? This episode has some fun moments including where we get to cover a Pearl Jam wedding. Yes, an actual wedding took place at this show. I repeat - PEARL JAM WAS SOMEONE'S WEDDING BAND. Just let that sink in. Eddie plays a first dance for the happy couple (who we hope are together today), a lovely rendition of Amongst The Waves. We also get a few uncommon performances at this show such as No Way and Tremor Christ. For more exclusive content, head on over to our Patreon account to donate to the show! With donating you'll receive monthly exclusive episodes, a t-shirt, a bootleg from any show we've covered and best of all a chance to join us for an episode to talk about your favorite show! Episode 26: Milwaukee, WI - Night 2 - 7/9/95

Episode 26: Milwaukee, WI - Night 2 - 7/9/95

It's taken 26 episodes, but worlds have finally collided! We welcome to the show Brad Blazek of the OG Pearl Jam Podcast Single Podcast Theory to talk about his first show he attended. Opening with Act Of Love and finishing with Porch - what a great way to make a Pearl Jam live debut! This episode is loaded with topics that only Pearl Jam podcasters could possibly turn into tangents. This show is known most for a rare version of Jeremy played sparingly throughout the years that has been dubbed No Jeremy. A strange take on the original hit song that was turned into a jammy, psychedelic performance where the lyrics were broken up into smaller parts. Another memorable moment from this night was when Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers joined the band to play a song that never originally had a percussion track. Other topics of conversation in this show include a quick review of Eddie's performance at Innings Fest as well as a Mumford and Sons show that Randy attended over the weekend. And you can't have an episode from 1995 without a good conversation about Starter Jackets! We have a new Patreon episode available now for all of our donors featuring the band's performance from VH1 Storytellers. Head on over to our Patreon account, donate however much you'd like to get access to more exclusive episodes as well as an opportunity to join us on our show and more! https://www.patreon.com/rss?campaign=2070077&auth=wZPDicrn8SbSk4jHMoARnul3Orf7FU6f Don't forget to keep up with us on social media @liveon4legspodcast on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Episode 25: Holmdel, NJ - 7/14/03

Episode 25: Holmdel, NJ - 7/14/03

As the band waved goodbye to a historic 2003 US tour, they went out with a unique bang taking two songs from every album and playing them in chronological order. While it was a creative way to break into the first set, a major part of this episode debates whether or not they made the right song choices from each album. With some dead spots within the set, could the band found a better way to develop this arrangement or did they put themselves into an awkward position? Along with a memorable first set, they were joined in the encore by opening act Sleater-Kinney for an array of covers, including a rare version of Hunger Strike. We've been critical of the SK appearances before, but did they redeem themselves this time around? For all of you Patreon donors, don't forget that this week our VH1 Storytellers episode will be available for exclusive downloads! Episode 24: Greensboro, NC - 8/6/00

Episode 24: Greensboro, NC - 8/6/00

The Binaural tour featured a bunch of sneaky, sleeper shows that may get lost in the landscape 19 years after the fact. The Greensboro show may end up being one of those sleeper shows the no one really talks about anymore, but is a solid 2 hour affair front to back. Brother Stephen Maytan returns for the first time since episode 9 to talk to us about his experience at this show, the second he'd ever attended. Lots of great conversations in this episode. Here are a few of the many topics we discuss: - The lack of mainstream hype around Binaural - Shady Ticketmaster outlets - Delicious North Carolina cardboard pizza - What song defines the Binaural era? - Having to listen to a CD in your car in 2019 - What's on VH1 nowadays? - Do you envision the color black when listening to the song "Black"? These topics - plus more about the actual show that included Smile as a closer - all wrapped in one episode. Sign up to our Patreon account to receive exclusive LO4L content! Next week we release a new episode featuring the band's appearance on VH1 Storytellers. Along with exclusive content, you'll also get from us a free shirt, a bootleg from any show we've covered and a chance to come on an episode and talk about your favorite Pearl Jam show. Episode 23: MSG - Night 2 - 9/11/98

Episode 23: MSG - Night 2 - 9/11/98

In this episode we attempt to tackle what has long been seen as a top 10 show in the history of the band. Although they made their Garden debut the night prior to lackluster results, the band was ready to bounce back in a huge way and prove that they deserved to be on the same stage as the greatest legends in the history of music. Notable about this night was the fans continued campaign for the song Breath to be played for the first time in 4 years and finally the wish was granted. It is the moment that many recall as being the ultimate highlight of this night. Though this was only "the cherry on top of the sundae," the show is jam packed with hits and passionate performances of other fan favorites that put this show on the upper echelon of shows in their history. We do our best to recreate the magic, but the task is a challenging one. Also! Eddie climbs his microphone wire and finds a way not to die! Episode 22: Milan, IT - 6/20/14

Ciao! This week's special Patreon episode takes us back a few years ago to a 2014 show in Italy. Live On 4 Legs Patron donor Aurelien Moureaux joins the show to talk about his experience in the pit as well as some insight on the differences between following the band on tour in Europe than the US. Big talking points in this episode include early utilization of the songs "Sirens" and "Black" in the set list and how weird they may seem on paper, but the results will surprise you. Also - Eddie makes his best attempt at being a Disney princess that will leave you Frozen. This is an episode you won't want to let go!
