What is the best stock market investment strategy to deploy money is the ultimate question to be answered, if you have money of course. Most people think about whether to deploy it all immediately (LUMP SUM INVESTING) or to stage the purchases over a period of time (DOLLAR COST AVERAGING). Vanguard and other research shows that you'll do better with a lump-sum investment in 70% of cases and better with dollar cost averaging in 30% of cases. So, it is up to you what kind of odds do you wish to bet on. However, you know I will not give you just the stock market investing statistics. By discussing the difference between investing and speculating; the difference between lump sum investing where you invest when you have the money and when a financial instrument fits your required return and dollar cost averaging, where you are more concerned about the market as you try to time it we will also touch on what really matters for the long-term. I wished to share the fundamentals of this investing channel by sharing my 5 core stock market investing beliefs: - the markets are not efficient - the efficient market hypothesis doesn't really work in the long-term and is something we can take advantage of. - long-term attitude - everybody is so focused on the short term and not on the long-term but the long-term really matters. Of course you can't forecast what will earnings be in 5 years, but you can forecast what will be the competitive advantages, the growth, the fundamentals, the risk etc. A long-term perspective tells you what will likely be the better investment in 5 years, that is all you need. - value or growth? Why not both? Growth is an essential part of value! - Research, research and research - the more stones you turn, the more ideas you can find that the market doesn't even see because it is myopic. - Hyperbolic discounting - everybody wants to double their money in two 3 years - if you want to double your money in ten years, you have an advantage and you will likely double it in 5, buy you must keep targeting doubling it in ten, not five. that is crucial. Oil stocks are a buy now because oil prices will come back to a supply and demand average balance. So, oil stocks that survive the year with huge oversupply will do good and pay good dividends in the future. Look for value and avoid risky plays with a lot of debt. At current levels 68% of US oil production is completely unfeasible and just that would remove 8 mb/d from supply and correct the price if the situation persists over a year. So, the average long-term price of oil will be higher than $30. On stocks - we have to differentiate between rebound buys and long-term investments. Exxon XOM will likely rebound as oil prices go up and the oil price war ends, but their growth strategy might not work well over the long-term as a small decline in demand might lead to long-term oversupply. This adds to the risk. Similarly, creditors have shows confidence in the sector by giving Shell (RDS) $12 billion in credit so the dividends can keep coming. But, taking on debt to pay a dividend is simply stupid in my opinion. Lundin Petroleum can break-even at $17, the Russians have similar costs when it comes to producing so there are companies that will make money no matter the environment.
