From Super Reporter to Super Mom / Sarah Buynovsky | The Ryan Leckey Show | Ep. 13

HEY PEEPS! I’m really psyched about the latest episode of the Ryan Leckey Show, and I hope you will be too! That’s because this week I am talking to a television LEGEND in Northeastern and Central PA! You know her as news reporter and TV anchor Sarah Buynovsky, but I know her as my good friend. If you were wondering where she has been and what she’s been up to lately, then tune into our podcast, because you are about to get all the nitty gritty details on Sarah Buynovsky! Sarah and I got to chat about her experience as a newscaster at Channel 16 as well as everything she’s been up to since she left! Her life is nothing short of amazing; there’s never a dull moment when you are raising four kids. But, before we get into her life with her kids, we definitely have to focus on her 20 years of experience as a television newscaster… What an accomplishment!! Her career started in New York, where she was a radio talk show host during her college years. She eventually made her way to a television anchor in Syracuse before eventually moving to Northeastern, PA, where she and her husband settled down. You might call Sarah, the smooth operator of Northeastern PA, and she has seen a lot in her profession, some great things and some not-so-great things. Between corruption scandals and homicide cases, it was hard for her to cover some of the gruesome stories. It was especially difficult because she knew that on the days when she showed up at someone’s door, it was usually not with good news and it could easily be the worst day of that person’s life. Despite the challenges, overall, Sarah loved her job in TV news. Chasing after stories was a thrill for her. Covering her beat was never boring and there was always a sense of accomplishment at the end of a hard day's worth of work. Sarah told me how proud she is of the trust and credibility she built with the community, and she wants everyone to know how honored she was to be part of their mornings for so long! Life changed for Sarah when she started having children, and that topic is where things really get interesting in our conversation. Her two worlds, her mom-life and her career, collided during a particularly upsetting story. I won’t get into the gross details here, but it definitely hit home for her as a mother. She started to realize that she was missing something important: her children. She wanted to be there when her children got home from school, and she wanted to take them to their after-school activities. She didn’t want to miss the big moments in her children’s lives because she was out chasing some news story. Sarah explains to me how hard it was for many in the community to understand why she left such a successful career. Although most have been supportive of her big move, she still felt insecure and went through a major identity crisis after leaving WNEP. Her biggest supporter, her husband, finally got her to see that she did not have to defend herself and her decision to anyone and that everyone’s circumstances in life are so vastly different. I had an amazing time chatting with Sarah, one of the funniest persons who I know by a MILE! It is clear to me that her love for her community is still strong as ever even though she is no longer working as a newscaster. This love shines straight through during this episode of the Ryan Leckey Show!
