Wyatt Johnston and Logan Stankoven make Dallas Stars History in incredible 7-6 win over San Jose!

Wyatt Johnston, Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson are the new top line for the Dallas Stars this past week. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, we look into how good is this trio. They certainly past the eye test and have been able to produce over the past four games together, but where do they stack up amongst others in the NHL. The Dallas Stars battled over the weekend to take three out of the possible four points after a tough overtime loss to the New York Islanders last night. Jake Oettinger was out with the flu, so Scott Wedgewood had to make back to back starts and went save for save against Ilya Sorokin who's one of the best goalies in the NHL. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey recaps the weekend games between New York and New Jersey including the Stars great ability to bounce back after bad games. Wyatt Johnston, Jason Robertson, and Roope Hintz have provided a spark as a new line and thriving the more they play together. Even when the Stars are fatigued, they're finding way to muster up enough energy and effort to at least earn themselves a point. Nils Lundkvist returned to the lineup after Miro Heiskanen went down with an injury and he has made the most out of his return. He seems to be a lot more confident and poised with the puck. Also, he's using his legs and mobility to generate offense, he finished last night with four shots on goal and scored his 2nd of the season. The Stars would have to feel much better about their defense if Lundkvist is an every day player when Miro returns. Joey states that you have to accept that he will be out muscled and make mistakes here and there, but the improvements are promising. To finish off the episode, we revisit the possibility of Heiskanen joining the team on the road trip. He has yet to travel with the team, but he is inching closer everyday to return. Joey thinks having him back in the lineup against the Ducks on Thursday would be a gentle introduction back and set himself up nicely at home with a few more days of rest. The Dallas Stars got dominated by the Philadelphia Flyers in a 5-1 loss at the Wells Fargo Center last night. After one of their most complete wins of the season a few nights ago, the Flyers compete level was much higher. On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, Joey explains that the Stars simply did not have the energy and competitiveness to match the Flyers to win last night. It was a frustrating night for many Stars, the lone bright spot was a goal by Tyler Seguin off an assist by Matt Duchene. Jake Oettinger faced 43 shots including 14 in the first and 16 in the second. The Stars never really had the puck and when they did, most plays ended in turnovers and the Flyers coming the other way. Unfortunately, this effort came at the beginning of a road trip when the Stars were hoping to make a push before the All-Star break. Next up is the special teams play, the power play had two opportunities and only mustered two shots on goal. The Stars had a lot of trouble on their entries, and when you combine that with the Flyers NHL leading pk it was a bad night on the man advantage. The Flyers scored on one of their four power plays of the night, and the goal at the time made it a 3-1 game in the 3rd period and pretty much sealed the win for Philadelphia. The Stars really miss Miro Heiskanen on the power play who has quarterbacked both units for most of the season. He did not travel on the road trip but there are encouraging signs he will join them at some point in the next three games. To finish off the episode, Joey looks ahead at the back to back against New Jersey and the Islanders on Saturday and Sunday. On today's Rankings Extravaganza on Locked On Stars, Joey looks at two lists including rankings of the top NHL prospects under the age of 23 and the top 10 most improved players this season. Starting with the the top players under 23, Wyatt Johnston comes in at number 10, the rankings include grades on Skating, Puck Skills, Hockey Awareness and more. Joey has a bone to pick with the skating rating they gave Johnston. Each player is among a tier as well, Johnston's tier was NHL All-Star. Other names that made the list were Logan Stankoven, Thomas Harley, Lian Bichel and Mavrik Bourque. The next list is the most improved players in the NHL this season, some names such as Tyler Seguin were left off the list since he is a big name that is having a bounce back season. At number 3 is Thomas Harley, not only has Harley established himself as an every day player, but a top pairing defensemen who's been productive offensively with minimal power play time. Since December, he's playing just over 21 minutes per game and has played the most amongst defensemen since the injury of Miro Heiskanen. To finish the episode, we preview the Philadelphia Flyers. The Stars begin a four game road trip tonight and have to face a much improved Flyers team that is 2nd in the Metro division. The Dallas Stars changed up all but one line last night against the Los Angelas Kings and the offense didn't miss a beat! Roope Hintz, Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson was a glimpse into the future for Stars fans everywhere. Pete DeBoer was not entirely pleased with the overall offense recently which is a crazy thought for a team that has averaged four goals per game in their last 15, but it worked. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey explains how he loves that the Stars are not being stubborn or complacent about mixing it up. Yes, the offense has been great this season but the ability to change it up and get guys who have been struggling involved can unlock so much more. Evgenii Dadonov scored on the fourth line, Sam Steel was the best player with his new line-mates and also scored a shorthanded goal. The Stars are flexing their depth and that is something very new here in Texas. Next up Jake Oettinger. The Otter is back! On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey proves and explains how the Dallas Stars have been outscoring their problems over the last month. With injuries to Jake Oettinger and Miro Heiskanen the already glaring problem of the Stars has been exposed in certain games. However, the offense led by Matt Duchene and Jason Robertson has kept the team a float. Joey highlights how the Stars lead the NHL in Goals Per Game and Goals For since Dec. 15. They are 16th in Goals Against and are having to score three or four goals most nights to win hockey games. It's not a bad thing that the depth of Dallas such as Mason Marchment and Tyler Seguin are having great seasons, but the Stars have to improve in their own end to reach their ultimate goal at the end of the season. The next segment is a preview of tonight's game with the Los Angelas Kings who had been winless in eight straight heading into yesterdays game. Cam Talbot who's having a resurgence for the Kings will be in net looking to end a losing streak of himself. It will be important that the Stars weather the storm in the first 10 minutes of the game in what should be a great test against a quality team in the Western Conference. The final segment is the return of Shooting Star! For tonight's game Joey goes with Thomas Harley. Jake Oettinger returned from injury last Friday for the Dallas Stars and the next night, backup goalie Scott Wedgewood went down with an injury. Another player down in a key position that has not played up to standard this season. Today's episode of Locked On Stars begins with the discussion of Wedgewood's injury and how that effects the way Dallas may have to use Otter moving forward. Without Oettinger for a month, Wedgewood was one of the busiest goalies in the NHL and held the Stars in a division race. Now the Stars have to decide how much they want to use Otter who just returned from an injury that him out for almost a month. With the All-Star break right around the corner, the next seven games leave valuable points up for grabs. The break allows the Stars to reset and hopefully return fully healthy and ready for a playoff push. Joey looks ahead at the final seven games before the break and the expectations with their number one net-minder back. The defense which has been the core issue all season is holding on without Miro Heiskanen and they have to find a way to win games until he returns or they get help externally. The final segment takes a look at the Central Divison as the Stars make a push for the top seed. Dallas, Colorado and Winnipeg are top 10 in points in the NHL, and the Stars are only five points out of first place. Even during a stretch of not so good play and injuries in key spots, the Stars are right in the mix. The Dallas Stars hit the halfway point of the season tonight against the Nashville Predators as Jason Robertson looks for his fourth straight game with a goal. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey believes Robertson is on the verge of huge surge offensively. Robo has 17 points in last 14 games, with just 15 goals this season it's a matter of time before he hits his stride. His trip completed by Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski are playing some of their best hockey recently and we're starting to see some of those vintage Robertson plays we've been accustomed too in his young career. With his goal on Wednesday, he now has 119 goals in 250 career games, Joey discussed where that ranks above U.S born scorers and more. The Stars play a back to back beginning with Nashville tonight and on the road in Chicago on Saturday. We look back at the crucial 10 game stretch the Stars began just before the new year. With Connor Bedard injured, the Stars have a great chance of taking all four points this weekend. Also, it looks like Jake Oettinger is returning! Finally, down on the farm the Texas Stars are sending three forwards to the 2024 AHL All-Stars Game.
